The Coyotes have been rumored to be on the move for years. Now that they have no plans for an arena in place, a move seems inevitable.

Houston is one of the leading candidates to get a relocated or expansion franchise, so this feels like the first domino. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the Yotes were in Houston within the next couple of years.

Yeah, because the Coyotes are very shiny...

I'm cool with them getting the Yotes. They usually suck, and I can now see the Stars play locally.

That's crazy considering there are plenty of tickets available for less than that. There are even some for $285 in the lower portion of the 300 level.

Imagine the irony in an NHL team being in Houston. Their fans have been acting like hockey doesn't count, ever since '99

It's hard not to sell mine, but the in-laws are using them. Seats next to ours are listed between $500 and $600/ea for game 3.

I don't know about that. I don't actually know a single Houstonian who feels that way, but I'm sure they're out there.

I'm an Astros/Texans fan (don't follow the NBA), but also a huge Stars fan. Hell, I had Stars season tickets for awhile when I lived in Dallas and will again when we move back in a few years. Any Houstonian or former Houstonian who really likes hockey already either has their own team from another city where they grew up/worked or has adopted the Stars. I know quite a few people like me, but also know a lot of fans that grew up all over. Houston is a more diverse city with more people from all over because of the oil & gas industry.

A Houston team could probably catch some more casual fans and lean on heavy attendance of visiting teams, but I don't think a hockey team would be successful long-term in Houston, at least not any more successful than Arizona. They would have to make a deep run early in their history to capture the city.

I think with the amount of out of staters that came in during COVID to all over Texas, Houston might find odd success with popularity with some of the new population.

Why does everyone automatically think that if the Coyotes can't get that specific stadium area, that they're just going to move to Houston? I think there's a whole lot of other cities that make just as much or more sense than Houston.

First, any city in Canada, namely Quebec City, Hamilton or Halifax. Canada would fall over themselves to get another team, and I feel sure people would do WHATEVER it took to get them to move north.

Second, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; there is no other area in the United States that loves Hockey like Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin. They have tremendous hockey history with some great NHL players (hello Joe Pavelski) and the Badgers, and I think the state of Wisconsin would latch on to a hockey team instantly. They would also have instant rivals in the wild and redwings.

Third, Portland, Oregon; they have sneaky hockey history and have some of the most passionate fans in the country. It's a decent sized market but with only two professional teams, and they would have instant rivalries with Seattle and Vancouver.

Fourth, Kansas City, Missouri or Kansas, pick one; similar argument to Portland except that they actually have an NFL and MLB team. This would also further expand the NHL and hockey in the Midwest where it's really just the Blues right now, and fit in with the central division like a glove.

Fifth and Final, Salt Lake City, Utah; this is a small market, but unlike the NBA, it's a winter sports town that would likely support the heck out of an NHL team.

Houston would not doubt be in the conversation, but i think it would be a pretty major risk. Despite some recent success from The panthers, lighting, Stars and occasionally the predators, there's been a ton of prior swing and miss with warmer climate sunbelt teams. Atlanta lost TWO teams, the panthers were awful for 15-20 years, Carolina and Nashville have been up and down for a long time, etc. Houston is a big market in theory, yes, but is it big for hockey? In a state that already supports the stars, would it be a good idea to bring another team in? I have serious doubts and think other cities above make more sense.

You think Hamilton, Ontario would get a team with Maple Leafs being a half hour away? I could see SLC getting a team seeing how they are also in the running for an MLB expansion team. I could also see Cleveland getting one seeing that the city of Cinci does not want NBA or NHL.

I can also see Milwaukee, Indy, KC, and Houston all getting teams.

I've seen it in the countless Dallas v. Houston dick measuring contests on TexAgs over the years. It's just humorous.
Full transparency, I'm from Fort Worth. I hate both of those cities equally.

It's not about the Coyotes getting "that specific stadium area". That organization has all kinds of major issues. They're sharing a tiny college arena at the moment and nowhere else in Arizona seems to want them, for starters.

As far as cities go, there are several potential landing spots, but the league isn't likely to go to a traditional hockey market. They want to expand the game/footprint and this allows them to do that without doing another expansion team. I could see Houston or SLC as likely spots. Atlanta has been mentioned, but the Thrasher fiasco should disqualify them. I don't think there's any chance of another Canadian team.

I don't particularly care for the idea of a team in Houston, but I have no doubt that it would work there and expand the league's footprint. This isn't about "what is currently a good hockey market that doesn't have a team" it's about "what could be a good hockey market if we moved a team".

Same here as well.

Grew up in the Brazos Valley, but my dad's family is from Houston. So we grew up big Astros fans. When the Oilers left, we stopped watching the NFL and everyone in my family hates basketball. We started watching hockey in the late 90's because we had some Canadian Aggies working on our ranch. Thus we started watching the Stars because they're the only team in TX.

Now that I live in Dallas, Stars games are the only pro sporting events we really go to.

The NHL insists on staying in Arizona. Houston getting a team by relocation is a longshot. Expansion is far more likely, and the owners should raise the price as high as Fertitta is willing to pay.

The Hockey Guy says the biggest impediment to Quebec City is the geography. You would have to move an Eastern team to the West, and DET and CBJ will fight like hell against it.

SLC would make sense. Especially if they're looking to move immediately and don't want to shake up the divisions.

Along the same lines as Houston, KC is another option.

They flunked with the Flames and the Thrashers. The Atlanta and Georgia business community just did not invest in hockey. Advertising and suite sales were awful. NHL won't go back in our lifetime.

Sounds like the NHL is dead set against forcing any team to move to the Western Conference. Montreal will push back and Dallas will push back because any move next door drains part of the fan base. Montreal could afford it. Dallas would suffer.

A really good article on why Salt Lake City is the likely destination.

Also, the Coyote's owner is an LA guy, and appears to want to stay in ownership even if minority.
