I don't understand why she is keeping Cici in. She is having a rough game, we have some depth to try out. Missed coaching opps

Based on how we're playing against Pitt, it's going to be a VERY long season.

  • We struggle with serve receive
  • Our OH is (#17) is 5'10 and is a liability in virtually all aspects of the game.
  • The OPP (#9) is a Frosh prone to simple mistakes
  • We have very little size at MB

The Libero does have some spark but even she's somewhat inconsistent w/ serve receive

As a university with our resources, it's difficult to understand how we don't have more talent on this team?

exactly! Cici can't hit over or through these tall middles!! I love her effort and her defense has improved, but she's not the hitting we need to compete with a team like Pitt. Maybe with the easier games coming up we can see others shine and figure out the best rotations for conference!

I'm not that concerned, I still feel a little better than last year!! the arms of Meuth and Lednicky give me more faith!!

Why are we not testing our depth. Guinn is a stud and at least deserves a chance. She was a top 40 recruit. Johnson played decently the first two matches. Why is she now getting benched?

I think not having capable middles is our biggest concern. Both Logan's have proved to be very capable. It's going to take time to find setter hitter connection. But given we can barely get one kill from the middle is a red flag. No commits coming in either. The two we recruiting for this year are projects are best

Why are Cici and Brown on the net together for two rotations. When they are paired together at the net, we lose lots of points. They need to split that up

This isn't the number 6 team in the country, they are a lot weaker this year. They are at most, top 30. San Diego is a top 15 team.

I believe Pitt lost their top 3 players in kills from last season. So Pitt is playing with a lot of new players too.

Disappointing to leave this weekend being swept 2 consecutive matches at home. I was hoping to be a little more competitive. At least, we pulled out that 5 setter in the opener.

3 games in, it's very apparent where the weaknesses on this team are from my non-expert eyes.

If this is as deep as the team can be this season, I think we are in trouble. Can't rely only on Meuth or Lednicky to win games. Hopefully the next few easier games will give the rest of the team a chance to show what they can do and earn the trust of the coaches.

That said, middle of the pack seems to be where this team is headed. If they get better (and they should given this is only their 3rd game together), would love to see them at the top of said pack. I don't see how you beat the top dogs without extraordinary luck though. If you don't have horses, you don't have the horses.

I like this team though but it's probably 2 years out with good recruiting to being a good team. Not sure this coaching staff will be around that long without a faster turnaround.

this team was voted to finish 10th in the SEC preseason coaches poll. That looks about right.

This will not be a 10th place team in the SEC IMO.

We played 3 solid teams / programs with virtually all new players everywhere. Give this team time to gel and see where we are.

That said here are things I noticed from the weekend

We didn't set the middle often and this got very little production offensively. Even if Jen we did set middle we didn't score at a rate we needed.

Logan on the RS needs to continue to play all the way around and hit the D set from back row. Errors will happen but she will get her kills

We need better production from OH2
We know what Cici can do. She can provide a spark and does both pretty well for her size but long terms or even a long match she will likely hit no better than .100 for a night. What she can do is provide that change of pace and spark that could give us a run but not over the full set/match will hit what she has done

Would like to have seen Brown get more swings. It seemed to me we had more chances to go to her in system and choose the pin attack over her. Don't remember much slide attacks being attempted. But running the slide with a D attack could provide a nice tandem play

We have always been a little basic out of the middle and these first few matches seemed even more basic with no Back 1 or slide attempts or really very many attempts for middle production.

I would like to see what Lexi can do at OH2 in the next tourney. We don't have a tough tourney next week and should get five wins before playing Indiana and Western Kentucky. Mia Johnson showed some good things but I think she was probably a bit more predictable against her former team who knew her tendencies at least in practice.

We are better than I expected with so much turnover from last season. And I applaud the program for taking on three solid teams at home in their own tourney. San Diego is an elite 8 level team with the right draw. blossom is an awesome setter. Pitt is likely a Sweet 16 team.

For those who know how volleyball is actually played, is there a reason Meuth seemed to get blocked a lot, especially as the set progressed? Is this something the setter can help with better set placement? Her line shot is really good so maybe the ball needs to be pushed out more?

Meuth is an upgrade on the outside from last season and is a big threat for us, but Pitt and SDSU had big blocks. And our offense gets really predictable. Basically, her and Logan are the only two real threats at this point. It's asking a lot of her to be productive against those blocks when everyone in the gym knows where the ball is going.

I'd be interested to know if we have another arm that can swing off the right and, if so, whether she might experiment with running a 6-2. It's asking a ton of our undersized outsides (whether Mia or Cici) to side out when Elena is front row, particularly if/when she subs out Logan. It's basically a run waiting to happen. Having another threat on the right (even if it's not a great one) could at least get some of the attention off the outside.

No way i take Logan hitting off the back row to run a 6-2 system

too much of a threat and threats are what we need

I went back to look at box scores and it is criminal how little we ran middle

I would think for the upcoming five matches that needs to be a priority in practices and matches to establish a middle connection

we had bouts where we didnt serve receiev really well, not bad but not where a top 25 college team needs to be which is what we aspire to be right now.we seemed to lunge and poke at the serve in recetion more than setting a really good platform and letting it rebound nicely

Meuth seemed to toward the end want to hit with power and didnt see the block and all the teams we faced had tall good blockers on the pins especially. San Diego was blocking everything either for points or not allowing it to come on to their side during all their matches. That along with Blossom as a setter is why i think they are maybe the team to beat in conference this season which is almost always BYU.

I dont think people realize the competition level we faced with a literal completely new lineup on the floor. I would equate it to playing a Oregon, Notre Dame and Utah in football...not quite Tier 1 across the board but no slouches at all

Baylor who we went five with (albeit an exhibition) beat Wisconsin a top 5 team. We are not neceesarily young but we are new as a collective group. We will gel and see how it goes but as a poster pointed out when you have CiCi and the setter on the front row with a middle who you arent setting and you take Logan out of back row your options are limited until you establish the middle. I would like to see at least double if not triple the amount of swings out of the middle for the next tourney and then maybe give Logan some rest occasionally on the back row but she will be needed during conference play as a 6 rotaion RS attacker. We havent had that since Jenny Banse a long time ago and she didnt hit near as high contact point or as often as Lednicky will have to this season.but she made for a solid ball control team with two good outsides in Ammerman and Battis which was one of our better teams at TAMU.
Ag4eva95

She got blocked a lot because our offense was predictable. Her and Ledinecky were the only two getting set, so it was easy to always have a double block ready for her.

In addition to that, she hits very flat. Hitting flat results in hitting a very hard ball, but if the block gets hands on her, it will go straight down.

I don't disagree about Logan. She's an ideal opposite and should remain on the Court. But, if she's out and our backrow is all defensive specialists (which it was at key moments this weekend), then you're putting a ton of pressure on our outsides. That's not a winning recipe.

Completely agree about the middles. They need to get the ball if only to relieve some pressure off the outsides.

Serve receive has improved immensely since last year. it was hard to watch at times last season.

Really wish we could have convinced Talbert to stick around.

A few observations from this weekend:

Logan is going to be an absolute stud by the time she is done here. Excited to see her development. She and Caroline are a great one-two punch offensively. Unfortunately that's about where the offense starts and stops. There were occasional glimpses from Mia as the second Outside, but consistency will be what makes or break her as a second OH option long term.

As for people saying we need to run more offense out of the middle, that's not going to happen with the middles we are currently running out there. Maddi B may be a great teammate and a wonderful young woman, but she is not an SEC starting middle. She constantly looks lost on offense and is a step too slow on defense. With our Outsides being shorter we need the help blocking in the middle and she just doesn't get there in time. Molly Brown is better defensively, but still lacking any consistent attack. Other teams will key on our pins as we have no threat out of the middle. This is also what allows Caroline to get blocked so much. Defenses know we are going to set the OH especially when our setter is in the front row. It's either that or a back row attack. Either way the opposing middles will cheat over until we can force them to stay home. Hopefully one of the young middles comes along as the season goes and can start to get some quality reps.

Our back row is looking better than last years, but we still struggle to pass effectively on a regular basis. Way too many serve receive errors. The defense looks better when it comes to digging up balls, now we just have to clean up the passing game. I like Lauren as the libero as she makes a lot of nice digs. I am also excited to see Ava Underwood get some more game time reps and see what she can become. I think her future is very bright as well.

All in all this was a good weekend to start putting all of the pieces together against some very tough competition. At least two of the teams we played this weekend will be making a run in the NCAA tournament. Our girls put up some nice fight and it was good to get the experience of winning that five set match against a very solid Hawaii team. Now I want to see what kind of adjustments the coaching staff makes after seeing the girls in game time action. I definitely think we are better than 10th in the SEC after seeing them play this weekend.
