It's like the NHL has a vesting program for head coaches. Once you've coached enough games another NHL team must hire you again and again.

No sport recycles head coaches like the NHL.

Probably 2-3 years if I had to guess. At least on average. And unless the stars buy him out of his contract he's got at least one year over in Sweden? before coming statewide.

I would imagine they'll try to have him ready for the 2025 season. That's when Lindell and Suter come off the books and is a realistic timeline.

I watched every bit of it. Dallas sports was very well represented with Modano, Pavelski and Romo winning it.

Yep. I knew Pavs could play but didn't know he was that good. Pretty impressive considering he's still playing in the NHL.

Would likely mean trading Doby and/or Faksa somewhere, and SJ would likely retain some salary.

As to why we'd want a 37 year old defenseman...have you met Jim Nill? But in seriousness, he has history with DeBoer and Pavelski, he's a right handed defenseman (which they desperately need), provides physicality and actually still contributes offensively at a decent pace.

If this were to happen though, definitely feels like one of those deals where it looks bad in year 3...if not sooner.

It may work though as his contract would come off the books at the same time as Benn & Suter. That would give the Stars some immediate help but also allow for big moves in a few years. Nill may be thinking that there's a 2-3 window with this group and then the ability to reset with no downtime after the 24/25 season.

And lets face it. Miro made Roman Polack look good, and Burns is light years better than that.

But like most of these leaks, probably won't happen. Apparently Dallas and SJ are "far apart" in negotiations.

I like the Marchment signing.

Kind of relieved that Burns went elsewhere.

Apparently, the Stars and Klinger have been talking a ton and teammates are trying to convince him to stay. With Marchment's contract, don't see how it's possible anymore. But then again, they could trade away almost $7 million between Doby and Faksa.

If all that gets accomplished in free agency is Marchment and Klingberg, I'd be completely content with that.

It seems like DeBoer's system relies pretty heavily on defensemen being able to get the puck on net, and Klingberg might be the best in the league at that. I've certainly had my ups and downs with Klingberg during his time here, but I think it would be a pretty major loss if he goes elsewhere.

It would be fine signing Klingberg provided the money is right and he is no longer blocking Miro's development. Miro needs PP1 time and klingberg should drop to PP2.

Miller is a boring signing and the kind of roster filler we were all expecting to be signed for the D.

Marchment seems like a high risk high reward signing. 4.5 million seems a bit high for a guy who hasn't played much and only has had one sort of break out season.

Miller feels like our punishment for that Suter contract. Not that I don't like him. I think he'll be fine, but it's a downgrade on the blueline for sure.

I like the gamble on Marchment. While he plays on the opposite wing, he essentially will be an upgrade over Radulov at a lower cap hit. He's a big physical guy that plays a solid two-way game.

That leaves 1-2 spots for a young guy to step in. All of that, plus a new coach/system, and I'm somehow optimistic about this coming season. Maybe I'm crazy.

As frustrating as it is that the Stars haven't been contenders for the flashy top end free agents and likely won't be for another couple of years, it is a cautionary tale for going after the shiniest new toys for the sake of having the shiniest toys (Jack Eichel, Alex Pietrangelo)

They're still a decent team if they're healthy but man, they're going to struggle to place 12 NHL level talent forwards on their roster
