In less then 45 minutes, our cross country teams will race for a shot at nationals! Our girls race at 10am and it all comes down to this one 6km race! Our girls have a shot at nationals, but all 5 need to have their best day on the same day! Our girls have been up and down and yet to run their best race on the same day, and I pray and hope that's today! If Julia Black and Abbey Santoro do their job and stay close to the top, I expect our freshman Gemma Goddard and Maddie Livingston to run with them and score low! Hopefully Grace Plain has her best race too, every single place will matter today!
The top 2 teams advance and Arkansas has a clear shot at number one, but in my opinion 3 other teams will be fighting for 2nd with us! The favorite is Abilene Christian, they have a stud in Irene Rono who will fight for a top ten spot. Prudence Kiyeng and Brianna Gerlach have huge PR's but they can be up and down. Our top 4 have to beat one of them of stay close. Their 5 runner should be Grace White, so we should track how far she's behind. We need to hope the Arkansas girls can beat Rono and Black/Santoro can stay behind her and ahead of ACU's 2/3 girl. Texas has a strong runner in Beth Ramos, but the 4 behind are not as strong but are able to run in a pack. We need our 4 to take down their 2/3/4/5 and we easily beat Texas. LSU is strong up front led by Katy Ann McDonald, but have a weak 3/4/5. So I think it comes down to us and ACU.
The course is definitely not a PR course, so it's all going to come down to strategy and placing. Our girls got off to a nightmarish start at conference so hopefully the lesson was learned. Our girls are talented and can run up top, so hopefully they get in a strong position and maintain rather than have to fight and claw back for places.
Let's pray all our girls have their best day today and we can be celebrating, but it will be a dog fight! Let's hope Kiyeng and Gerlach don't both beat all our girls. We need to run with them. White and Holderman of ACU need to fall back behind our girls. We need to show we have more depth. Abilene Christian is a strong team that will rely on Rono's high score, so hopefully we have some girls ready to run the best race of their life today. Anything is possible and I believe their best race has get to happen! I expect all 5 to run together and our leaders Black and Santoro will position us well to place low and compete with ACU and Texas...
