Recruiting Country: The latest recruiting news surrounding the Maroon & White
TexAgs' recruiting analyst Ryan Brauninger joined TexAgs Radio on Wednesday morning for another edition of Recruiting Country, highlighting the latest news and notes from the recruiting trail surrounding Texas A&M.
Key notes from Recruiting Country
- Of all accounts, the weekend was good. The visitor list was all from outside of Texas. 11 of those 18 from the last weekend were from out of Texas. It seems like A&M has put itself in a nice spot for three or four kids. With Jaylan Hornsby, A&M has put itself on a pedestal compared to Penn State.
- Caleb Odom was on campus. They did a great job with him. I think it’s A&M or Alabama for him. He enjoyed James Coley and understanding the tight-end role at A&M. I think they could take the right one or the right two. A&M has stockpiled talent there. I feel the best about Odom and Hornsby.
- They have momentum with Cameron Coleman. He is getting pulled everywhere. Whoever gets him on campus will build a recency bias. He is growing his relations with the staff. A&M is right there in the mix with his top schools. It's a tall task to get a five-star out of Alabama. You weren't going to do that if you didn't get him on campus. A&M put their best foot forward. It’s kind of like the Walter Nolen and Shemar Stewart commitment, I didn't believe A&M was in it until they got them on campus multiple times.
- You could get a five- or six-man class offensive line class. A guy like Coen Echols from Katy can play center. You want a center prospect. The class could have guys like Weston Davis, Ory Williams, Bennett Warren, Michael Uini, Makai Saina and Daniel Cruz. These guys are from the state. They just offered Samir Camacho. There is plenty of offensive line talent from the state.
- Debron Gatling is running really good. He ran two sub 4.5s. He reminds me of Quartney Davis.
The big ones on campus today are Drelon Miller and Tyanthony Smith. The state 7on7 Tournament is tomorrow. Drelon is a huge priority. When talking about the best football player in the state, he is in the conversation. People will compare him to Ainias Smith. He is built more like Deebo Samuel. Drelon Miller and Tyanthony Smith came from an official from USC. The Trojans are more on Tyanthony than Drelon. This visit today at A&M is important for A&M. Penciling them to any school is premature. I feel better about A&M's chances with Drelon. They have done a great job with Jordan Lockhart.
- Tristan Jernigan reaffirming his commitment is more important than the average recruiting fan would understand. They got him early. That was a great evaluation by D.J. Durkin. That's a pretty big deal. This kid is a sensational prospect. This is the first time Durkin has had the entirety of the cycle. Let's see how he is able to close. They are pretty close to locking down Lockhart. They are right in the fight for Tyanthony.
- 7on7 starts on Thursday at 1 p.m. All the small schools start tomorrow. Big schools start Friday. All four BCS teams will be competing. There are probably 15 to 25 kids with A&M offers coming to town.
- With Cameron Coleman, a lot of your staying power has to do with what you do with your offense in the fall. There's a lot riding on this season. On the recruiting trial, it may be more vital that they win games. If they win games, it will be pretty easy to get these guys. If it goes bad, I think you go heavy in the portal because you will lose momentum in high school recruiting.
