Recruiting Country: The latest recruiting news surrounding the Maroon & White

TexAgs' recruiting analyst Ryan Brauninger joined TexAgs Radio on Wednesday morning for another edition of Recruiting Country, highlighting the latest news and notes from the recruiting trail surrounding Texas A&M.

Key notes from Recruiting Country

  • Of all accounts, the weekend was good. The visitor list was all from outside of Texas. 11 of those 18 from the last weekend were from out of Texas. It seems like A&M has put itself in a nice spot for three or four kids. With Jaylan Hornsby‍, A&M has put itself on a pedestal compared to Penn State.

  • Caleb Odom‍ was on campus. They did a great job with him. I think it’s A&M or Alabama for him. He enjoyed James Coley and understanding the tight-end role at A&M. I think they could take the right one or the right two. A&M has stockpiled talent there. I feel the best about Odom and Hornsby.

  • They have momentum with Cameron Coleman‍. He is getting pulled everywhere. Whoever gets him on campus will build a recency bias. He is growing his relations with the staff. A&M is right there in the mix with his top schools. It's a tall task to get a five-star out of Alabama. You weren't going to do that if you didn't get him on campus. A&M put their best foot forward. It’s kind of like the Walter Nolen and Shemar Stewart commitment, I didn't believe A&M was in it until they got them on campus multiple times.

  • You could get a five- or six-man class offensive line class. A guy like Coen Echols‍ from Katy can play center. You want a center prospect. The class could have guys like Weston Davis‍, Ory Williams‍, Bennett Warren‍, Michael Uini‍, Makai Saina‍ and Daniel Cruz‍. These guys are from the state. They just offered Samir Camacho‍. There is plenty of offensive line talent from the state.

  • Debron Gatling‍ is running really good. He ran two sub 4.5s. He reminds me of Quartney Davis.

The big ones on campus today are Drelon Miller‍ and Tyanthony Smith‍. The state 7on7 Tournament is tomorrow. Drelon is a huge priority. When talking about the best football player in the state, he is in the conversation. People will compare him to Ainias Smith. He is built more like Deebo Samuel. Drelon Miller and Tyanthony Smith came from an official from USC. The Trojans are more on Tyanthony than Drelon. This visit today at A&M is important for A&M. Penciling them to any school is premature. I feel better about A&M's chances with Drelon. They have done a great job with Jordan Lockhart‍.

  • Tristan Jernigan‍ ‍reaffirming his commitment is more important than the average recruiting fan would understand. They got him early. That was a great evaluation by D.J. Durkin. That's a pretty big deal. This kid is a sensational prospect. This is the first time Durkin has had the entirety of the cycle. Let's see how he is able to close. They are pretty close to locking down Lockhart. They are right in the fight for Tyanthony.

  • 7on7 starts on Thursday at 1 p.m. All the small schools start tomorrow. Big schools start Friday. All four BCS teams will be competing. There are probably 15 to 25 kids with A&M offers coming to town.

  • With Cameron Coleman, a lot of your staying power has to do with what you do with your offense in the fall. There's a lot riding on this season. On the recruiting trial, it may be more vital that they win games. If they win games, it will be pretty easy to get these guys. If it goes bad, I think you go heavy in the portal because you will lose momentum in high school recruiting.

We're currently NOT predicted to get one single Top 10 in TX recruit this cycle for the first time since Jimbo got hereā€¦..

I count 2 kids that we even made their semi-finalists, Simmons and Bussey. Miller is #12 who we're at least a solid finalist for. https://247sports.com/Season/2024-Football/CompositeRecruitRankings/?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool&State=TX

How is baseball recruiting going. We really need help, pitchers who can find the plate. Hitters who can consistently put the bat on the ball. Going from a JC 2 yr system to a 4 year system is tough.

Football recruiting has really gone downhill, 5-7 and 2-6 SEC) can do that. I think the "Jimbo Era" is over.

Have the BMA's told Limbo no more money until you win ?
Just wondering because these reports are nowhere near like they used to be ā€¦ā€¦. Other schools with crappy records are still pulling in big time recruits butā€¦ā€¦..

We need to pick it up with national top 100 type players. But we absolutely are leading for Bussey. Not sure who's "prediction" that is. At worst, we co-lead, but most think we have the inside track.

I bet Jimbo pulls 3 of the top 10 when all is said and done. At the very least, 3 of the top 12/13. Maybe Drelon Miller is one of them and ends up in the top 10. He's 12th right now and virtually indistinguishable from the few ahead of him.

We are also going to land a whole hell of a lot of 92-94 type players. Very good foundation to build a class around. Guys like Blake Ivy, Weston Davis, Ashton Funk, Dealyn Evans, Caden Durham, Nigel Smith. We either lead for or co-lead for all. OOS guys like Breland, McKinnley, Coleman, etc can easily make up for in state misses, but we do have to land a couple of them.

But again, the key between a good and great class will be if we can pull off a couple more of these national top 100 types that we currently are sitting 2nd or 3rd for now. Maybe a Kobe Black, or pulling off Cameron Coleman, etc. We won't get there if we go 7-5. We likely will pull a couple no one expects us to right now off if we go 9-3+. Jimbo does it every year.

Is there any shot at Justin Williams? Would be nice to actually see us pull a stud LB.

Minimal. We are likely 3rd at best right now. Would be a surprise.

But if we win on the field, I suppose no one is completely off limits. We need a big season. It's going to really make the difference between a solid class, and a great one. Jimbo is still as good of a closer as anyone, but he needs something to sell these guys come December.

As of today and as Brauny has said recently, I think last few weeks, this is a real long shot. He hasn't really showed any interest in us. I wouldn't hold your breath.

We desperately need to win and win big this fall or else recruiting will continue to suffer. We have the NIL, but winning makes everything better.

NIL quickly become worthless when you have a losing program that cannot even go to a bowl game.

Kibble to sips.. big OL and same school as Kenyon Green who we helped get drafted first rd.. ugh thought we had good connection at Attascosia.. our recruiting is becoming very average.. TCU just pulled in 2 too 60 players.. beginning to feel like we will always be Texas 8&4.. I had a lot of hope after Orange Bowl and top recruiting class ever. Just can't fathom how 2 years later the different feeling I have about the trajectory of program.

If we win a bunch of games this season we'll gain some commitments from guys we aren't currently in on.

No we won't. That's not how recruiting works. Your on-field results show up in the next recruiting class. This class is going to be pretty gross as last season was pretty gross.

My statement was not intended to apply to just 2024. Although there is still time to make up some ground. I generally agree with you though.
