Aggies win eighth straight by defeating HBU, 6-0, in midweek matchup
Riding a seven-game win streak, the Texas A&M softball team returned to Davis Diamond for another midweek matchup, this time facing off against the Houston Baptist Huskies. The Aggies came out hot on both sides of the ball and were able to take care of business, advancing to 18-3 overall, the program’s best start since 2018.
The start of the game looked promising for HBU, as two leadoff batters hit back-to-back base knocks to put the Aggies in a jam. But three straight strikeouts from Kayla Poynter reversed the momentum of the game early. The Aggies were able to take advantage and scrape off a run in the bottom of the first after loading the bases with no outs.
Poynter would extend that strikeout streak to five in the second inning, retiring the first six batters she faced in the game.
“I’m just settling into myself and being more comfortable this year,” said Poynter of her 5-0 start to the season. “I’ve really taken the time to figure out what I need to do and just attack the zone on every pitch.”
The score remained tight throughout the early innings, but a deep bomb over the center-field wall in the third gave the Aggies a two run-advantage. Herzog extended her hitting streak to five games, showing once again why she is so crucial to the team’s success.
“It’s nice to see Herzog just do what she does, and find ways to get herself on base,” said head coach Jo Evans. “I love the way she’s playing right now. She is making us go for sure.”
The Maroon and White broke things open in the fifth, as back-to-back hit batters with the bases loaded put the Aggies up 4-0. Despite not having her most flashy day, Haley Lee still made her impact, drawing two walks and hitting a sac-fly to go into the fifth with a five-run lead.
Despite being outhit in the game 7-5, eight walks from the Husky pitching staff certainly helped the Aggies get around to home plate.
Grace Uribe would come into pitch in the sixth for the Ags, retiring six of the eight batters she faced while striking out two. The Huskies got a few on in the seventh, but couldn’t take advantage, eventually falling 6-0 to the home team.
Jo Evans is confident in the team’s position heading into conference play this weekend.
“I think we should be feeling good about ourselves. I don’t see why we shouldn’t,” said Evans. “I think we’re taking really good swings and our at-bats are quality. We’re giving ourselves a chance to win and we haven’t stubbed our toe since the beginning of the season. I’m happy to see us playing consistently.”
The Aggies will travel to McNeese State on Wednesday and start SEC play this weekend, traveling to Baton rouge to take on LSU in a three-game series. Wednesday’s game is set to start at 6:30 p.m. from Lake Charles, Louisiana.
