Quick and easy.

In a briskly played ballgame that took just 2:25 to complete, Texas A&M defeated Houston Baptist, 4-0, on Tuesday night. Nathan Dettmer and Chandler Jozwiak combined to give up just five hits as they blanked the Huskies for A&M’s second shutout of the season.

“I thought we played a wonderful game tonight. Pitching and defense were at a premium for us, and none better than Nathan Dettmer. I thought he was fantastic.”

“I thought we played a wonderful game tonight,” said Texas A&M head coach Rob Childress. “Pitching and defense were at a premium for us, and none better than Nathan Dettmer. I thought he was fantastic.”

Freshman right-hander Dettmer dazzled in his second career start, spotting a low-90s fastball wonderfully and breaking off a beautiful curve to baffle Huskie hitters all night. He departed after six scoreless innings as his pitch count reached 90, but not before punching out seven and allowing just three hits.

“Those last couple of outings I’ve had, [my curveball] has been missing,” Dettmer said. “I realized I had it today in the bullpen.”

The victory is the first of Dettmer’s career.

“I know my phone is going to be blown up, first [from my mom] and then my whole family,” Dettmer said of celebrating the milestone.

Jozwiak picked up where Dettmer left off, recording the final nine outs to get the rare three-inning save. The lefty allowed a pair of hits and struck out seven Huskies in his outing.

The Aggies jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, making HBU starter Daxton Tinker pay for a leadoff walk to Bryce Blaum as Austin Bost drove him in with a two-out double, giving Dettmer early run support.

“Getting that run for him was big,” Bost said. “I knew I had to put a good swing on it, and good things happened.”

A power surge came in the fourth.

Austin Bost began a three-run fourth inning with a solo home run to left.

Bost began the inning with a towering blast down the left field line. Four batters later, Logan Britt launched with a two-run home run that cleared the scoreboard in left-center, giving the Aggies their four-run advantage.

“He is just an outstanding prospect,” Childress said of Britt. “The more at-bats we can invest in him, the better player he is going to be.”

Bost was the night’s offensive bright spot, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and finishing a triple shy of the cycle.

“I felt good in the cages,” Bost said. “Good things happen when you put good swings on stuff.”

The contest ended before the clock struck nine, by far the Aggies’ quickest game this season.

“It’s usually about 10:30 before I’m headed home,” Childress said. “I can handle those games being a pitching guy. I couldn’t be more proud of the two guys that pitched for us tonight.”

Texas A&M continues their midweek slate on Wednesday night as they host Incarnate Word. First pitch is scheduled for 6:32 p.m. CT from Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
