I was probally in elementary school during this time, but I remeber a guy name Vincent Meeks who went to Rockwall highschool(20 minutes outside of Dallas). He is one of the safetys at Texas Tech now. When he was at Rockwall he was the running back and he controlled the whole game by kick off returns, punt returns, and being used for a tailback or safety. Pretty darn good player at Rockwall.

Matt,

Artis and Ryan were good guys. That B-ball tourney always had some pretty good small town talent.

James McCalister, Blair HS, Pasadena, Cal, class of 1968, California Southern Section Semi's, 5A division, the Rose Bowl.

Ran me over twice on successive plays to score two TD's (we had fumbled the KO after the intitial TD), running the same play mind you.

Signed with UCLA out of Blair, set all kinds of rushing records at UCLA. Played some NFL ball, ran hurdles too. Just a big (6'2", 240#) black, fast RB, with power and determination, running over a stand up DE (6'2", 190# white kid) with average speed at best. I still remember those cleats landing on my stomach.

Doesn't matter, we won the ballgame anyway, but he hurt me...

I dont remember the kids name, but he played running back at Clovis HS in NM. I remember going to Clovis to watch the game, 4 full buses of very miserable kids, and we had pinned them on the 5 yard line. They line up and run a sweep to the short field, guy busts it 95 yards untouched. HOLDING the play comes back. So now they have the ball at the 2.5 yard line, run the same play and gets the same result. Best part was we had the NM state champ in the 100 playing on corner and the 3rd place sprinter on the other corner. With the angle, neither one could catch the guy. They went and played Clovis CA the next year and I think he ran for like 220 against them. Led Clovis to two state championships and a top 3 National finish. After HS he just disappeared.

Jeff "The Jet" Bergeron

pngindians.com/allstate.html

All American running back for PNG, the other All American running back that year was someone called Tony Dorsett.

Jeff went to play for the UH Cougars and was never heard from again.

I guess I could add Bobby Newcombe to the list. He went from all state qb, to rarely used WR at NU. I think he played a few years as a return guy in the NFL, but not sure.

I remember seeing Robert Strait when he was as Cuero. In the two playoff games I saw him in, he would take a hand-off, run up the middle, carry what seemed like the entire middle of the defense 10 - 15 yards, break out and score a touchdown. It was against 3A competition but I never saw strength like that at any level.

Hands down Eric Dickerson. No one could touch him. He won state for sealy in 78 single handed. He ran so smooth, and upright, it was just incredible to watch.

I was a junior when we had Hut Allred at Brownwood. He was an all stater that made people miss and could run over his share of people. I think his height might have cost him some in the recruiting game, but he had as much talent as any running back I have seen. He was also a good guy, which isnt always the case with the athletically gifted. He wound up going to UNT and had some injuries. Not sure what he is doing now. Also the Stephenville teams of 94-95 (two years undefeated) had some scary talent. Shaylor Pryor and Curtis Lowry (dont know if those are correct spellings) were the best O-linemen I ever went against.

He was awesome. To win the Houston Touchdown Club's Offensive Player of the Year as an O-Linemen is just sick.

Lamar also had two pretty good RB's that season -- or at least Faneca made them look good.

sure, 5'3" WR for Tech who used to wreck A&M and everybody else. Tiny guy, but very good.

I don't remember their names (maybe someone from S.A. can help me out), but when Roosevelt won state in 1995, they had a running back who ran for 1,000 yards in the regular season (impressive considering he split time) and a running back who ran for 1,000 yards in the playoffs alone (very impressive). Neither one went anywhere after high school, as they were not exactly college material if you know what I mean, but they were two of the best I have ever seen on the best high school team I have ever seen.

As far as one's that didnt pan out but got noticed by a big school definitely Jorrie Adams.

My dad and I went to watch a Jasper playoff game in the Dome. Jorrie had a bum ankle and I was kind of disappointed that he wasnt going to play well. He dominated on one leg more than anyone Id ever seen on two. He down blocked backside on a cutback play and literally took out the DE and both DT's.

If were going guys that did pan out, I would say they all would have to come from the 2002 playoffs. The Madison-Northshore, Westlake-Madison Game, the Westlake-Lufkin produced lots of great players most obviously Reggie, Courtney, Vince, and Chad.

The best players I ever actually played against would have to be from the 2003 Bridge City squad. The running back Peebles and the QB whos name I cant remember just killed us.
Runner-Up would have to be Curtis Crew from the 2004 Huffman squad.

The best players I ever saw

Johnny Bailey - RB Jack Yates 85 he was a man among men on a team that was possibly the greatest football team of all time.

Chris Pryor - RB Converse Judson 83. he was Earl Campbell with the brain of a duck. I knew the guy through mutual friends and he was the biggest waste of talent ever created. But oh was he talented.

Ty Dietmer - QB Southwest High 86. He was a lot of fun to watch, he could carve up any defense put in front of him, I still tink his dad could have made a fine college coach.

Isaac Curtis, Santa Ana HS, So-Cal, class of '68. Played at SDSU, then for the Cincinnatti Bengals for a number of years. Big, tough, fast, early proto-typical modern day TE. Could catch, run and block downfield.

I got him once from the side when we played him, but other than that, I never came close. This guy was huge in OC/SO-Cal for a number of years. Everybody was scared of him.
