Boobie was good, but one particular Saturday in Marshall, TX, he was a second tier back. First tier? That would've been Odell Beckham, another Marshall HS great that found got sidetracked after an illustrious career, never to be heard from in the sports world again. Went to LSU I think...

Saw Bam Bam Morris at Cooper high many years ago, went on to tech, then the steelers had a couple of really good years, but just could stay away from the Cocain.

Doyle Preston was a an ambidextrous QB/Pitcher at Mt. Vernon High in the early 90s. He could roll out to either direction and throw equally well with either hand in football. Once in a baseball game he threw two consecutive curve balls with each arm (freaked the batter out.) Doyle went to Arkansas got some playing time as a Freshman on the football field and was thought to be the guy that would really take the Razorbacks somewhere. In the end he blew both knees out and had a short stint in the minor leagues.

On that same Mt. Vernon team with Doyle, there was a kid named Steve Gatlin that was an all-state first team running back. Bad grades and issues with the law relegated him to a small division 2 program. He never amounted to anything there. That team of went 19 - 1 in the regular season their jr and sr years in high school but lost in the second round of the playoffs each year. Just couldn't ever get it done when it counted.

Since I never "saw" mike vick or Randy Moss in high school, so I would have to say Marcus Stickers from Lake Highlands & Rodney Thomas at Groveton.

Ernie Koy from Bellville, ran over my a$$ several times.

Jim Linsteader from Brenham, I did not play FB against him, but I did nearly take his head off in BB when he was pitching.

Never saw him play but Kenneth Hall, Bear Bryant said sitting him (because of something about defense) was his worst decicsion.

Have to pick the greatest HS RB of all time.

P.S. don't rip me because I didn't know the exact reason he didn't play much for the good guys, he was a little before my time

Longviewag10,

I am with you on Bobby Taylor. Most underrated kid ever. That kid was off the hook. And this way back in 91-92, way before EastTex was on the recruiting map.

On a side note. We had a Texas Basketball top 10 recruit in 92. Longview came to town with Bobby Taylor (at the time only known to recruiters as a Football Athlete). The first time he got the ball he did a 360 dunk on our 6-9 superstar.

He ended up at Notre Dame, then had a pro career that I believe is still going (but now he is backup?).

Either way, he never got the hype he deserved.

Oh, and Rodney Thomas from groveton back in the late 80's. Remember him?

He didn't pan out as most would have liked, but he did have talent in the good ol' 2a!

I actually played against Rodney Thomas when I was a freshman and he was a Sr. That team was loaded for a 2A school, not only him but that whole backfield with their QB who signed with OU but got into alot of trouble up there and a bruising fullback who was also on their track team. I also remember their 4x100 relay would go against 4A and 5A schools and clean house with Rodney anchoring.

Stiggers was ELECTRIC! I got his autograph a few times as a kid when Lake Highlands would play Plano or Plano East. He's probably the most exciting player I've ever seen in high school. Graham Harrell comes in second.

Stiggers had at least 3 TD runs of 65 yards+ called back because of shady away-from-the-play penalities against our East team in 1995. He still ran for 190. But the horses on that John Tyler team that year were a different breed. . .

best rb was a kid at arlington martin in 2000 I believe, led the state in rushing. Pretty sure he went to a d1 college and got into drugs.

Goes back aways, Kenneth Hall RB, from Sugarland (50's)went to TAMU, ruined by the "Bear" and Warren McVeigh RB for San Antonio Brackenridge(50's), went on to uh. McVeigh was the best HS RB I have ever seen, speed and moves that were unbeliveable.

The two best players I ever saw in HS that have never been heard of again are Chris Dancer at Lockhart in '97. He was a great RB and there were rumors of him being looked at by Auburn but the kid had some real emotional problems and got kicked out of his high school.

The other is a guy who played at Bastrop in '96 - '98. I think he was a WR and his name was Donovan Henderson. He could absolutely take a game over and was all state as a sophmore I believe. Don't know what happened to his college career or if he even had one, but I think I saw that he died a couple of years ago (possible murder). It's too bad.

In all seriousness... Odell James. We played him in the 5A Championship in 1993. Why he choose Baylor is beyond me.

I played with Demarcus White...QB for Woodville. Our Junior year he was rediculous. One of the best arms I have ever seen. Every program in the country contacted him in the Spring of our Junior year.

First game of our Senior year, he got late hit and tore his ACL and MCL.

I think he played some I-AA ball, but basically faded into "bolivian."

Elephant,

I am pretty sure Boobie never played in Marshall his senior year, so I am not sure who you saw. If he did play, it was after the injury. He was hurt before the season even started; the movie took some creative license on that point. I can guarantee you Boobie was a first tier back; every program in nation wanted him. In Rivals terms, he was definite 4 star, maybe 5 star!

I would have to go with Derrick Simon from Cy-Fair. He was a stud RB as a freshman and sophmore then either knocked up his gf or lost interest in football.

Bert Emanuel was a qb that went to play at Rice and eventually was a WR for the Falcons.

If the question is the best player I've seen in HS, it's Reggie. In consecutive games in the state semis and finals, he led Lufkin back from big deficits to win against some pretty stiff competition.

If the question is best player who didn't go on to stardom, the answer for me is Jerrod Douglas. Saw him just stomp all over Trinity in the state title game. Went to Baylor, did okay. Haven't heard of him since.
