I know it is just as irrational as freaking out over a storm, but I find it easy to downplay all of the hype each time there is a named storm. Of course, this one is on track to exceed initial expectations in the intensification department, so there is that.

Cone, are you in Bellaire/Meyerland? What are you planning to do? I'm seriously thinking about moving everything I can upstairs. Wood and sheetrock can be fixed.

Let's highjack this thread on page 10.

I'm not buying the FEMA scenario.

Maybe he is a hitman and the target is only passing through Houston on Monday.

Other plausible ideas?

Sorry if I missed this but what kind of winds are we looking at actually experiencing in Houston?

Actually our company meteorologist just sent this out. Answers my question and then some if anyone is interested.

Quote:

  • As of 1pm CT, Hurricane Harvey now has maximum sustained winds of 85mph, and is centered about 335 miles southeast of Corpus Christi. It has been undergoing rapid intensification, and conditions are favorable for additional significant strengthening until it makes landfall late tomorrow night/early Saturday morning, likely near or just north of Corpus Christi around Matagorda Island. Due to the recent strengthening and favorable conditions, it is now forecast to be a high-end category three, major hurricane upon landfall with max sustained winds near 125mph. Additional changes (up or down) to the intensity forecast are possible. Major impacts from wind, storm surge and freshwater flooding are expected near and just to the right of the storm's path, specifically near Corpus Christi and Matagorda Bay, areas just inland from there and possibly up the coast as far north as Freeport.
  • The increase in the intensity forecast does not necessarily mean higher impacts or a higher risk of strong winds in the Houston area. Winds may gust at times to 35-45 mph at times as thunderstorms within outer rain bands move through the Houston area. Isolated, mostly weak and brief tornadoes will also be possible by Friday night and through early next week within these rain bands. Otherwise, no widespread wind impacts or are expected in the city. Tropical storm conditions, including storm surge, are more likely near the coast including in Galveston and of course points south closer to the track of the storm.
  • The main concern within the Houston area continues to be the threat for heavy rain and resultant flooding. Rainfall totals in the Houston area between Friday and next Tuesday are still likely to be at least in the 7-15" range, and locally higher amounts in excess of 20" are still possible. The greatest risk of flooding is still between Saturday and Tuesday.

I was in meyerland for the Memorial and Tax day floods. I would do exactly that if you can. Worst case you get a workout and no flood damage. But even the more reasonable weather sources are saying this is going to be quite bad.

yes

i'm moving everything i can of value upstairs that's above 1-2 feet from the ground. we didn't get water in the memorial storm, but the previous owners got water in Allison. the couch is getting put on blocks/bricks. throwing up the deuce on the master bedroom.

i fully expect to get water if it's anything close to Allison in duration/intensity

i thought Memorial Day was a good stress test, but this is just going to be so long in duration it's impossible to game out what's really going to happen. i bought some temporary sandbags but i can't see those being useful for as long as we are going to get deluged.

I'm in Maplewood. Our house has never flooded, nor has any around it. Water has gotten halfway up the lawn before. Don't have an upstairs, and not really sure what I could even put in the attic. Other than furniture, we don't really have anything low enough to get wet.

Then you guys are lucky. We are in Bellaire and the water was lapping our front door during the Memorial Day Flood and got in some houses around us. Obviously, we aren't the folks with the $1MM+ homes that are 5' up in the air.

I have sandbags for the doors. Going to put stuff upstairs that I can, the rest on cans/blocks. If it gets up over that, oh well.

Oh, I'm still starting to freak out a bit. And I'm sure my wife will be a lot more freaked out than me. Didn't mean to sound lucky, more like unsure of even where/how to start. I probably hit the post button too soon. I have some blocks that I may try to raise some things up, but other than that, I don't know.

I should add we've only been in the house since February, but I know the history of it well as we bought it from some family friends and my parents live across the street and down a few houses.

I leave for a few hours and you guys blow this up.

Just for the record, I am not trying to downplay this storm. I do believe it will be bad. Flooding will be bad, and those folks around PortA are going to get butthumped bad, without lube.

I'm simply skeptical of the 50+inch prediction of doom.

from the berger link:

Quote:

Key takeaways
  • It is likely the greater Houston area will see unpleasant, but manageable wind impacts initially from Harvey. Some tropical storm force winds are possible Friday night and Saturday morning. At this time I do not think power outages will be too widespread.
  • Rainfall remains the primary threat. Saturday afternoon through Tuesday, travel may become difficult to impossible. Some areas will probably be fine, but other deluged. Totals are likely to be higher closer to the coast than for inland parts of the Houston metro area.
  • For Houston, the heavy rains will probably begin to wind down from Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning, with residual problems into Wednesday.
  • Flooding concerns will extend from south of Corpus Christi all the way to southwestern Louisiana. Flooding problems will likely be widespread, with potentially huge impacts.
  • Risk seems to be increasing that Harvey will re-emerge in the Gulf of Mexico early next week, and retain Tropical Storm intensity, or stronger.
  • People in Galveston, and close to the upper Texas coast should consider preparing for high tides and potential wind issues on Monday and Tuesday, just to be safe. (We really don't know how serious the threat is that Harvey will re-emerge into the Gulf, but it's worth watching.)

Grocery store shelves are looking the same as Communist countries from what I'm hearing.

We're not unprepared, but I wanted to buy a little more water, some canned goods, and we just flat needed to do our regular shopping for dinner next week. Eff me.

Yep. Walmart was raided last night. Saw the psychos loading up their trucks with as many water jugs as they could fit in a cart. So dumb. I just needed some basics for the weekend as well. Water section was completely void except for 4 one-liter bottles of Evian.

Then got an 18-yr scotch to ride out the storm with. Total Wine & More still had lots of bottled water left.

Yeah, I fought the crowds and got the last of what we needed at lunch today. Got home and realized we're going to need diapers for the kiddos.
I'm not fighting the crowds after work today. Planning on going about 10:00 tonight.

Yeah, after all that I realized we're out of milk, and I've got two boys that drink it like water. Hopefully there's some left...

How much rain did we get during each of those floods? I survived those without water in the house. Hoping the same for this one.

I normally I am too but they keep saying it will hit land then skirt the coast towards LA very slowly which means lots of rain and Houston isn't exactly the city with the best drainage.

Time to get scuba gear and get ready to loot cars and 18-wheelers underwater on 59.

Off the top of my head I think it was 10-12" is 6 hours or so for Memorial Day. Something like that. Best case scenario is the rain is spread out over 4 days so that the bayous and drainage can keep up. Not overly hopeful but not panicked either. From what I've read, it's impossible to predict where these bands will drop the most rain so you just have to prepare for the worst.

In Bellaire/Meyerland, I believe we got about 11" in 6 hours or so. It was crazy.

I'm hoping it's not too much worse than the Tax Day flood because the water on Cypresswood came pretty close to overtopping onto my street.
