This is entirely an "I can fix him" take for our program and will be a big test for our new pitching coach. Arguing about last year's stats is stupid. No, those stats are not good enough to pitch for us, but he's shown enough quality "stuff" that he has a really high ceiling.

With proper development (I know, TBD, especially on the pitching side), he could be either a high level SEC leverage reliever or weekend starter.

The best comp I can come up with is Brandyn Garcia. He stunk at Quinnipiac (ERA 7.15, WHIP 1.67, BAA .324), but showed the "stuff" to be an elite pitcher. Yeskie tried to fix him and he wasn't good for us either, but Seattle/Arizona have clearly fixed him (and pretty quickly) and now he's an MLB pitcher.

If you look the post I made above from a scout, he's got above average MLB spin rates on his fastball, sweeper, cutter, and curveball (his change-up sucks).

Cautiously optimistic on the "upside" comment.

He's a bit like Ebby Calvin LaLoosh. He's in need of a good coach and a good catcher.

Those types of players have to be in the portal before you can get them. And it's unlikely that a very highly regarded guy would go into the portal.

OK, so what I meant was those players have to want to transfer. You're not going to get a guy who isn't thinking about transferring and not a lot of top tier players have a reason to want to transfer.

well if y'all really want the FACTS, here they are:

before the injury, Kellner's average dropped 52 points in SEC play. After the injury, his average only dropped 8 points.

I'm not here to argue one way or the other about Kellner, he's obviously very talented and has a bright future. But his hitting struggles had nothing to do with the injury.

it always blows my mind how many people on here cannot entertain any opinion that is different than their own without resorting to namecalling one way or the other. Kellner can be a very talented player with a lot of upside, who also struggled mightily as a freshman in the SEC(and we don't have to make up an excuse with false FACTS to defend that). it happens, freshmen struggle sometimes and still go on to be great players.
