Marcos Paz committed to Georgia today. Are we done in the portal? Overall, I'm very pleased with who we got.

I was hopeful we'd get him because he has real stuff. But he's got a lot of work to do to harness it. He was mostly ineffective this year.

I.e, he was a project, albeit a high end one. It's not like we lost Skenes.

Not transfer related, but LSU lost a 4* flip to Miami today . Anthony Murphy, OF/RHP

To be fair, when Skenes transferred from Air Force to LSU nobody knew he was going to be what he turned into.

Skenes was a known stud at Air Force. 2 straight years with ERA under 3 while also being a stud hitter. First year as a close, 2nd year as Friday night starter.

Correct but his point still stands. We knew he was really good, but NOBODY thought he'd end up being the most dominant college pitcher in modern history.

And who was the last college pitcher where you would have correctly guessed that? We knew he was a stud. His last weekend at Air Force didn't he go into Austin and dominate the horns lineup throwing 99? Everyone knew he was going to be really good and it's a night and day comparison vs Paz.

But the point is some guys take the next step at a new location. Of course Paz isn't Skenes. Duh.

Again. His point still stands. He literally said nobody knew nobody knew he was going to be what he turned into. And he's not wrong. Half the country had never even heard of him. Because he played at AF. How often do we see dudes transfer from a school playing low end competition to a sec school, and they just don't pan out? NOBODY saw this coming with Skenes no matter how much you pretend like you did.

"There's probably a lot of people that want to play baseball but aren't good enough so they join the military because they can't do anything else"

I guess he's trying to be funny but that's highly offensive. And stupid.

https://www.mlb.com/news/mock-mlb-draft-2023
https://soxmachine.com/2022/12/way-too-early-2023-mlb-mock-draft

These two mock drafts had Skenes as a top 10 pick before he threw one pitch in a game for LSU. He was a 1st team All-American at Air Force and won the award for best two-way player the year before transferring. He was very much considered already a top player beforehand and had success throwing for team USA over summer and in Cape Cod the previous summers.

Yes, he improved at LSU, but he was also expected to be damn good at LSU. Skenes was not some unknown talent that went from zero to hero.

That is why it is weird to compare Paz to Skenes. One had already shown to be a stud at this level and just was better than people thought he was, the other is someone who has potential but has not done anything to hang his hat on at this level. The point was Paz is still a much higher risk of not panning out compared to Skenes who was considered much more of a "surefire" guy out of the portal.

It's like comparing taking Braden Montgomery to Alec Blair out of the portal for us.

Both can be true. Skenes was probably the top player in the portal (Tommy White was the other you could've argued) and already a first half of the 1st round pick, but he added 5+ mph to his fastball and became the unquestioned 1-1 pick. He went from really good to elite.

Don't let the school he was committed to fool you; this kid is a talented baseball player who had some big schools after him, not to mention obviously MLB interest.

Stetson is a strong mid-major program.

Even if they are named after a hat brand and their mascot is the "Hatters." But their campus is nice and they have excellent facilities.

A pre-draft write-up about him…
Quote:

Travers' breakout senior season with the Celtics has him being looked at by multiple MLB clubs. The 6-foot-3 infielder raked against the toughest schedule in the area, hitting .464 with 46 hits, 12 doubles, one triple, and nine home runs with 34 RBI. Travers walked 21 times and had the best OPS in the area, sitting at 1.452. He signed with Stetson.
