Why do so many ags need their big name splash to feel good about a hire?

It seems he did pretty damn good with very little resources. Who knows what he could do with A&M kind of resources.

The way he built that DBU program won't work at a major program.

Seems to be a player's coach and of high moral integrity.

As long as we don't back the truck up immediately, I am all for it. He's done more with a lot less than what we can provide. It love to see what he can do with the support system @ A&M.

Provide some incentives in the contract regarding 1st in West SEC, 1st in SEC, win SEC tourney, regions up to CWS finals.

Trucking a contract just to be the largest contract is foolish.

Would be homerun hire.

Number 1 choice.

Another poster posted the following:

Heefner is an elite coach and is as good or better than some of the "proven" names being thrown around from the bigger schools. I believe we will win a national championship if we hire Heefner. Just my opinion. No guarantee on any of these coaches. I like the Virgina coach as well. Jarrett would be great but don't see him leaving FSU at this time (same with Vitello). There are a couple of other solid choices but they aren't better and certainly not "a lot better" than Heefner. This is no Billy Kennedy hire as one poster farted out (absolutely absurd).

Heefner's teams hit lots of homers and steal lots of bases and field very well. He's an elite hitting instructor. On top of Pennington's acumen, who is also an excellent recruiter. He's produced lots of draft picks with a fraction of the resources and depth of high end talent that he will have (or have access to) at A&M (or any of the top big programs). He's produced a lot of quality pitchers as well. And their current pitching coach is an upgrade over Weiner. Similar but better. All the analytics and other stuff and better pro resume (Cards and Braves) plus the mechanical development. Heefner has shown he can adjust to the times where it counts. His program the last couple of seasons is better than it's ever been and has still been trending up.

Some quick examples - team fielded at a .982 clip this year and .978 last year. They hit 115 HR and stole 87. Last year they hit 119 HR and stole 134 while hitting .301 and .299 as a team. They had a third baseman this year field at a .995 clip. Yes. Only 2 errors all season (well over 300 chances). He also tied for 2nd on the team with 16 HR and led the team with a .358 ba. They evaluated and went and got this guy from a juco before this season and then improved his game.

In the 2021 draft, they had 2 second round picks, a 3rd rounder and a 5th rounder. At small school DBU. They had an All-American pitcher this year. A guy that improved every year and lowered his ERA from 4 plus the previous year to low 2.

Can he do it in the SEC? Can he build a CWS regular and a national title team? At A&M, I absolutely believe he can. He's a real coach. My only question is the transfer portal. Does he, or will he, embrace it? Will he and his staff do what it takes? I'm talking about adding the Braden Montgomery type of kid when the situation calls for or presents itself. He will now have the resources and NIL to do so. I don't know one way or another how he views it.

With our resources, he certainly could win big here. I don't know who we are going to hire (or who is really interested) and there are several other quality guys we might hire. But Heefner is certainly one of those quality guys.

I think he would be a grand slam hire.

If he's the hire, I will be shocked if he doesn't win every one of you over quickly. He's a great coach.

He's a damn good coach. I watched DBU baseball all season long on ESPN+. They are very good for what they have program wise.

I like him as a hire, I just don't think he leaves DBU.

I agree, was Vitello a big name splash hire for Tennessee a few years ago??

If we don't get O'Connor then Heefner would be my second choice

Exactly. They brought Vitello up from an assistant position @ Arky. One thing is, give a guy a chance and the support and he will be loyal for a very long time.

He didn't build the DBU program. That program was dominant all the way back in the 90's when they were smoking SWC schools.

Please no. We need a home run hire not a bunt single. SEC or ACC Coach period.

FWIW O'Conner's UVA squad beat DBU in three games in supers three years ago.

I want a baseball coach that is qualified and hungry. We all know that Heefner can coach baseball. Baseball is baseball, it boils down to being prepared for or against the team we are playing against. I feel that Heefner and his staff will work hard to win. That's what winning is all about.

Also worth noting Wes Johnson was on Heefner's DBU staff for three seasons.

This is would be a great hire, he knows how to develop players we capture from high school and can fill gaps with our NIL funds. He has a long track record of building competitive teams not a flash in the pan.
