I started a thread earlier this year asking this question and there were a lot of good counter posts, but none hold up. I don't see a reasonable argument for any other coach we've ever had.

I was more focused on the big three since they're really the only ones that really matter, but point taken.

Still think he's better than Henry and Blair.

As much as I love it, baseball is not a major college sport.

Or why not Billy Gillispie? He resurrected a basketball program that was all but dead. Schloss while a fantastic coach is basically building upon a program that had a very solid foundation built by Chandler, MJ & RC.

I'm not sure it matters much for purposes of this discussion, but you're probably right. I don't know if college baseball is more lucrative for our school than women's basketball, but I assumed it was.

Pat Henry was the best hire ever. But Schloss has the right stuff to exceed that. Though maybe not back to back to back co-CWS championships with Coach Ford…or MAYBE!!!!!!

Schloss is a great coach. Be proud he is our baseball coach, celebrate getting to watch his teams play. No need to compare him to others.

No because I'm a baseball fan. Still it does not mean I will not recognize what Henry has done.

Yes. I think Schloss is a hell of a coach, but he doesn't come close comparing numbers. By the way Coach Henry currently has 2 teams ranked No 1.

I have heard of some guy we had named Cub, Wolf, no Bear that was his name!

it's too early to say if Schloss is the best ever...

but check back in 7 to 8 weeks....and we'll see

He was a great hire for A&M at the time. That is how he should be judged by if we are going to argue who has been the best coach hire at A&M.

I certainly can appreciate all of Henry's success, but I don't think it's fair to assume that the difficulty in all coaching jobs starts at par. What I mean, is that I think it's much harder for a man to teach a kid how to hit a fastball or throw a curve, than it is to tell a kid to "run fast".

ETA: and I think comparing their respective salaries validates my point.

You obviously don't know much about track and field

yes, in T&F the athlete is not competing directly against the physical skill of the other athlete

like in a hitter vs. pitcher situation

or o-line vs. d-line and so forth

It's impossible to compare coaches, but the fact there is no mention of Slocum is criminal

You do know that Homer Norton won us a national championship in football and a SWC championship in baseball, right? Or does that not count since it happened before your basis of knowledge started?

Bryant was great at Bama. He was still learning here. Why we lost our last 3 games in 1957 by a total of 6 points.

If he had allowed Bobby Joe Conrad to kick field goals, Ags would have finished undefeated and No.1 with a Natty.

Conrad kicked 5 fg in the College All Star game v the Chicago Bears and had a great career in pro football.
Bryant was too hard headed but got smarter at Bama.

What do you count as the modern era? What you can remember seeing yourself?

Here is why.

Since I've been alive (46 years) A&M has underachieved in literally everything sports related. Always a sleeping giant, never a blue blood.

So why is that given all of our resources?

It all comes down to terrible head coaching hires over and over and over again.

We are not cursed as some think, we've just been awful at hiring coaches.

Schloss is the exception though and proving the point. The only thing we've been missing is competent head coaches.

No.

There is a hell of a lot more to winning than having a great head coach. Otherwise coaches would be able to win national titles anywhere -- not have to work their way up to a major program.

Schloss is great because of his ability to attract top assistants, high school recruits, and transfers. Much of that is due to the appeal of A&M itself. He's also pretty good at the coaching part of the job, but as outsiders we can't really separate him from his staff in that regard.
