The largest school in the country with a fan base that is dying for a champion . Someone has to come in and cultivate it like they did at Baylor, Texas Tech, Auburn and Alabama. A great coach could do this easily. Untapped potential and timing is perfect

Hey a semi-positive post!

I do think one of my top requirements (after being a good coach, obviously) on a new coach would be someone who has a willingness to engage with fans. Someone that will do what Beard does and actively build support within the school and the community.

If we're ever going to really rise up as a program in basketball long term we're going to need that.

Just out of interest- which coach of the last 30 years that Texas A&M has had coaching basketball sufficiently "engaged fans" in the manner you suggest?

Or, if none have done it in men's basketball, then in any other major sport at this school?

Sincere question.

Just have to find the right guy who may not be the logical or obvious choice. Drew was an unknown coach when Baylor hired him but he had a plan and vision of how to win at Baylor. We would need to find that same type of coach if Buzz were to leave.

None really but football and baseball don't need to and I'd also say it's a lot more important now than it used to be even ten years ago because of the financial investment required to be competitive now.

They could also just be so good they don't have to, like a Sampson at Houston, but I think we all agree hiring that kind of coach seems unlikely.

Baylor was also at the lowest point a program could possibly be at and could afford to hire a coach with a long term vision for the program and didn't even have to worry about being good any time soon.

And they have weathered the storm when other programs came a calling.

Would love to stumble upon a Todd Golden type like Florida did (minus the creepy stalking thing).

Would be taking a chance, but someone who is or was an assistant at a consistently high level program - even if no head coaching experience (someone like Murray at UConn) might be worth a gamble- with an incentive laden contract.

However, with his Northeastern roots and history in that part of the country it would seem to be a long shot to even get his interest.

I just don't see us money-whipping to get a true current commodity like Beard or Mccasland... but would be thrilled if we could.

Yeah, they've done what the goal should be. Get the right coach and then it turn it into their dream job so they don't want to leave.

They've absolutely transformed that program to the point that whenever Drew hangs it up I think they could sign a high level guy. Even if it's not McCasland.

Definitely need more than a couple of sandwich boards around campus and the coach's wife posting emoji laden social media posts to really grow local interest.

Gary Blair literally went knocking on doors in the community inviting them to games! Jamie Morrison and his volleyball girls walk around campus playing volleyball with students, handing out shirts, and giving away tickets… when coaches care about this school and are determined to grow the sport amongst the community it's evident

There are plenty of coaches who would jump at the chance to be overpaid and coach in the sec.

$5-7 million in NIL pledges would help lure a good one. If we won't buy good players, what good is a top coach?

Buzz has to take the Maryland job for it all to work. I will tell you this we better pray he gets it.

Have the next coach spend some time with Gary Blair. After I moved to CS for work, the first time I went to lunch, an older gentleman asked if he could sit down with us to eat. He proceeded to tell us he was the Aggie women's basketball coach and asked us to come watch. Gave us two free tickets and we went. Enjoyed it and was a regular attendee for the years we were in CS. I never would have thought to go otherwise. Small scope, but it showed a burning desire to build a program (from nothing).

This is dumb, you don't know anything. There is no way we have some "zomg, huge name!" coming to A&M, but it's contingent on our current coach taking another job.

And isn't the fact that Buzz has actively tried to get out of here any way possible some kind of breach, sufficient for a termination "for cause"?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Buzz's buyout is huge. Unfortunately. Read Lucci's recent post. Especially that last paragraph.

Lucci's post. He knows. The guy we want to hire is dam good.

And I'll close this quick hitter out with something I've gathered from talking to some of my local sources throughout the weekend: Contrary to what many believe - and particularly the hyper-aggressive and always-anonymous antagonists on social media - Trev Alberts and the hierarchy at TAMU are determined to get things right across the board and that's especially true in the big three sports. I think some have it a little twisted in that they think the new AD and the direction college sports is heading in regards to revenue-sharing means the commitment to excellence is going to drop. Not remotely the case and, in fairly short order, I think you'll all realize the polar opposite is true. Top to bottom, the mindset is where the overwhelming majority of this fan base wants it to be.

I take that paragraph to mean something is going to happen on the baseball side of things. He also said earlier in that post that A&M firing Buzz would be a complete plot twist.
