I think you've previously suggested we fold the program entirely so probably best to leave you off the hoops planning and fundraising committee

Got to put the students closer to courtside and behind the broadcast tables. They did this in Auburn and it changed the environment tremendously.

Great idea ... probably squeeze all 120 student attendees into that area somehow.
Or is it now 20 ???

I have Stockholm Syndrome about Blocker---so many terrible memories such that I'd hate to see it go...or see future generations getting off easy by not having to deal with that hell hole.

it originally was called the A&A building. But so many coeds had classes there it devolved to the T&A building

Also played many variants of capture the flag and laser tag style games there until someone surprised a building security officer one night.

Put the students on the lower level behind the announcers will create a better atmosphere.

Will make the players ball out.

Will make it easier to recruit.

Will make it easier to win games.

Will make it easier for season ticket holders to complain about not being closer to the action and that is the result we should want.

The end result is the problem I seek and hope we create.

A great team to root for, a great atmosphere that is self-promoting, even if the season ticket holders are not as close.

However, everybody likes a winner.

Is a section of 50 enough?

The problem with Reed is that there just aren't very many close seats for anybody.

If we are going to invest this kind of money either start over and do it right or let the alumni put this money into NIL.

I posted this on the Premium thread... I agree with Gap on this one. I know I need to stay in my lane when it comes to big money like this because all I can afford is a low 5-figure donation, but unless there is any upgrades to Kyle, nothing needs to take money from a basketball stadium upgrade. It baffles me why we would spend anymore money on soccer, tennis, and track. I don't care how dominant our indoor track team is, nobody knows about them outside of Aggieland (and I would only say 1 out of every 100 Aggies know it at that).

What is presented in the capital plan:

Student Athlete Academic Center: $35 million
New Football Practice complex: $40 million
Bright Building Renovation: $15 million
New Indoor Track Complex: $45 million
New soccer stadium: $30 million
Blue Bell Park Upgrade: $30 million
Indoor Tennis Courts: $15 million
Training Field Pavilion: $10 million
Reed Arena: $125 million
Total: $345 million

What I think it needs to be:

Academic Center: $0
Practice Complex: $20 million
Bright: $0
Indoor Track Complex: $0
Soccer Stadium: $0
Blue Bell Park Upgrade: $30 million
Indoor tennis courts: $0
Training Field Pavilion: $0
Reed Arena: $295 million
If you only care about big time sports, why would baseball be included? Its a footnote sport nationally. You could argue track especially with NIL could be more meaningful face of the university than any baseball accomplishment by ANY program ever. I'd guess 30 million people AT LEAST worldwide was Athing Mu win the Olympic title in the 800m. If you took the sum of all unique people watching every college baseball game ever played (live or on TV), I doubt you'd get to 30 million.

Why are you comparing a college sport to the olympics? Seems odd. People weren't watching Athing because she is an Aggie
Good point. If you're going to compare college baseball to the Olympics let's figure out how many people just watched the World Series with two Aggie pitchers compared to college track meets.

Put the students on one side of the sideline like this:

OR...we can allow kids to stand on the roof of the sound booth where there is no handrail (file this in things that you will never see again):

Fertitta center has an entire side dedicated to premium seating, the opposite side has a lower level student pit running along the court which is below normal seat back chairs. I like having students courtside, but I also would prefer to keep my near courtside seats opposite the kids. If more students show up than can fit, that's ok, have some overflow ready in the baseline or baseline upper deck.

Students on one side with alumni on the other, you say? Might work... do we have evidence from any other on-campus sports to back this up???

All kidding aside, that shot of Jolly Rollie looks like an awesome environment to watch/play in.

When it was full it was outstanding. I still have good memories of an Arkansas game around 80-81. Eddie Sutton / Shelby Metcalf and a raucous crowd. My "seat" was in the aisle.

I loved the atmosphere and loved being on the floor close enough to get a warning from a ref for shoving cash in front of his face after a bad call.

The problem with Reed is that there are just too few "good" seats. Everything is too far from the court because of the design as a multi-use for everything facility ignoring that basketball is the main tenant. The only "good" seats are the courtside seats with the double letter rows. Of course, these are actually pull out bleachers that can be removed in case of a tractor pull or something. The majority of seats just start too far away from the court - whether student or alumni. I don't even like the sideline mezzanine seats above the rails. They are too far away as well. Bottom line is few people love their seats.

That's how Cameron Indoor got to be Cameron Indoor. Students used to be in bleachers encircling the court. Now they are one side and one basketball, but yes it makes a huge difference. CIS only seats 9500.

This is correct. Needs a complete rehaul of seating design. There is not a bad seat in Cameron. I've been up top in Reed and it's awful. We don't go unless we can get seats on the lower level.

I've never understood the infatuation with double decking every stadium. I thought we could have had a concourse at mid level without the second deck in this instance. In any event, sitting up there might as well be Mars as far as my experience goes.

While I agree the upper deck seats are unnecessary and might as well be a separate universe for basketball games, they do get filled out every year for graduations and Muster. Without them they would have to split the graduations into a million smaller ceremonies which the university administration has zero desire to do because it would take an extra week.

So that's just the issue with Reed being multi-purpose. You could build a totally separate basketball/volleyball only facility that is single deck with lower total seat capacity, and better seating locations/views. But then there's the issue of where to put that, and you leave a 13,000 seat arena sitting on west campus collecting dust for 50 weeks a year.

Frankly, IDK how they do a renovation that balances Reed still being large enough in seating capacity for our large graduations, but simultaneously is small enough to not make our basketball games look like an empty cavern. They dabbled with holding the engineering graduation at Kyle one year and everyone almost died sitting in 88 and humid May weather in graduation robes, and that was the only thing that convinced them to split the engineering ceremony into two and hold both in the AC at Reed.

Can't fix the dumb architectural decisions that led to Reed.

It is subpar in all ways got sports events with the balconies being especially bad. The cost in today's dollars is roughly $60 million. It needs to be replaced and to get the right answer is the job of the university muckety mucks. Go too big and it won't fill except graduations. The present Reed is fine for non-sports events. It's okay if you run just lower level attendance though.

If the goal is MORE than lower-level attendance, then that's how you plan the new facility. I've seen smaller, much worse facilities like the Allianz Energy Powerhouse that seats 6,900 for basketball and was built in the 1970s.

To give an example of its design, they hold marching band city-wide exhibitions in it and the floor extends under the seats and was used by the larger marching bands under the seats for their drills/performances.

I never expected to be in a venue I liked less than G Rollie for a graduation but my eldest son graduation from HS was pre-renovated version of that center. I'll argue a sports facility that seats likes 8,000 might be the right answer for revenue abd fill out (and therefore "energy") today, but we have to imagine we will eventually regularly sell out a 15,000+ arena if the MBB is a regular contender in the NCAAT and reaches E8, F4, and Heaven forfend the championship game…

I don't understand what exactly 128 million is buying. But if all it buys is lipstick on a pig…

Leave the seating alone. The building is fine the way it is. I've had season tickets for years- section 221, center court; If you want an NBA style building, go see the Rockets. This is the NCAA…

9k is the max we need for a basketball arena

We have no winning team or tradition or even a fun unique atmosphere for b-ball (just a terrible attempt at aping FB that doesn't work in basketballs tempo)

Attendance will always struggle in anything bigger but with a super nice, basketball first 9k arena it will be mostly full most of the time

One of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen posted. Student body of 70,000 and we were in a relatively short period of basketball mediocrity doesn't equal shrinking our capacity. Just watch the video where we had 13,888 if you want to see the kind of atmosphere we can routinely have.

All we need is a consistent winning program. The crowd will come. BCG had it and it wasn't that long ago. We had thousands of students camped out for tickets and that wasn't for just one game.

Buzz will bring consistent high level basketball results. Our needs are going to look very different when Buzz has us competing for Championships for years in a row.

The whole 'but we're a football school' argument is ridiculous. Florida has very big crowds when they are doing well. So does Ohio State. Michigan too, and I think anyone would say those places are football schools, and their student enrollment is smaller than us.

We need the upgrade. I just wish we'd make it bigger. I think we're going to be 8-10 years down the road and wish we had.

Reed is a good arena and when full is a good atmosphere. The planned renovations are fan creature comforts with some premium areas that are needed. However, we already have really good basketball facilities for the players and coaches. Unlike football there is almost zero correlation to the stadium / arena and the quality and success of the team. Allen Fieldhouse in Kansas is a barn with mostly bleacher seating and either until very recently did not have air conditioning or still does not have it, several "mid-major" big time programs play in oversized gyms with very little fan amenities or creature comforts but I'm sure they have good facilities for the players and coaches. TT probably has the nicest area in TX and our surrounding area.

Given Reed is a multi-use facility it would be $$ well spent.

All that other $$ slated for the olympic sports, soccer, tennis, S&D, softball, etc., etc. is a total and complete waste of $$. Their facilities RIGHT NOW are all extremely good and just need to be maintained. I am a huge fan of Coach G and the women's soccer team.... Ellis field and the player facilities are completely fine and will be for the next 25 years. They don't need a new stadium or anything else. It wouldn't matter if they won the next 12 national titles in a row, it would still be a sport which loses $ every year with limited attendance and limited interest and support. Agreed Olsen needs some fan amenity upgrades, more seating, outfield seats, party deck area, etc. as attendance and demand supports it. The player and coach amenities for baseball right now are very good, maybe a few improvements needed but overall very good.

The outdoor track stadium is brand new and excellent. I would agree for a new indoor track facility but that has more to do with getting a new football indoor practice facility which will displace the current indoor track facility.

Really any $$ not spent on football and men's basketball and to some extent baseball is a waste of $$, those sports would need to be able to pay their own way for their facilities and improvements. Most of those other sports could go away tomorrow and most people would not notice or care.
