I posted this on the Premium thread... I agree with Gap on this one. I know I need to stay in my lane when it comes to big money like this because all I can afford is a low 5-figure donation, but unless there is any upgrades to Kyle, nothing needs to take money from a basketball stadium upgrade. It baffles me why we would spend anymore money on soccer, tennis, and track. I don't care how dominant our indoor track team is, nobody knows about them outside of Aggieland (and I would only say 1 out of every 100 Aggies know it at that).

What is presented in the capital plan:

Student Athlete Academic Center: $35 million
New Football Practice complex: $40 million
Bright Building Renovation: $15 million
New Indoor Track Complex: $45 million
New soccer stadium: $30 million
Blue Bell Park Upgrade: $30 million
Indoor Tennis Courts: $15 million
Training Field Pavilion: $10 million
Reed Arena: $125 million
Total: $345 million

What I think it needs to be:

Academic Center: $0
Practice Complex: $20 million
Bright: $0
Indoor Track Complex: $0
Soccer Stadium: $0
Blue Bell Park Upgrade: $30 million
Indoor tennis courts: $0
Training Field Pavilion: $0
Reed Arena: $295 million
Less Aggies can name somebody on the MBB team than who run track. If that is your criteria then Reed should get nothing.

The portal doesn't help that!

Everyone knows Athing Mu.

seriously...not exactly the right time to be ****ting on Track when Athing Mu is about to become the face of US Women's T&F for the next decade

The main reason we need a new indoor track is because the current indoor track venue (and indoor football space) is absolutely hideous.

And they have to demo it build the player development center and new practice fields and bigger indoor.

If Football didn't want that real estate, the indoor Track wouldn't be touched

Yeah I'm all for anything that gets those things torn down.

Also, apparently I need to get into the olympic sport construction game. $30M for a new soccer stadium? It going to have recliners for the seats?

No details but it's the third largest outdoor venue we got and it actually gets fan support unlike many other sports

Yeah and I'm not trying to tell people how to spend their money. If people want to give $30M to soccer then do it.

I'm just saying that seems like a wild price for a soccer venue. I'd think you could build the best stadium in all of college soccer for like half that.

Not when you consider locker rooms, offices, tearing down old stuff. It's not that much different than what softball cost or outdoor track

is it, we sank 24 into Olsen, now another proposed 30 million for Blue Bell, and it still will have berms and not really that much more capacity.

Once they added on the practice gyms and locker rooms that pretty much meant we're keep Reed right where it's at.

Best part of all this is, it's so much ****ing money, none of us aren't gonna pay for it. So who cares about the cost.

I hope the tighten up the seating area and bring everything in closer to the court. The current sight lines are terrible.

Build something between McFerrin and Ellis Field that is designed for sports and seats about 9000, similar to the Palestra. The atmosphere will be off the charts. Let Reed be used for concerts, graduation, and trade shows.
I know NOTHING!!!!

Great news! Reed has been an embarrassment since it was built. Especially bad considering it opened about the same time as the badass arena Tech built.

I'm excited to see an investment like this in Aggie hoops! For those saying we need to win more first....NAH. Better facilities helps with recruiting and more amenities at the arena creates a better fan experience, which creates better attendance.

I find it interesting that it looks like Volleyball is not addressed. For 15 years or more they've been sticking "New Volleyball Arena" in various spots on facilities plans (like in the lot around Olsen, or on the Reed grounds at the corner of Olsen Blvd and Tom Chandler). Which always made it seem like something that was on the front burner.

I think some things are put on their for looks but are complete pipe dreams. VB getting their own arena is one of those things

Yep, kinda reminds me of when the SA Spurs played at the Alamodome prior to them playing at the AT&T Center.

If a new building or Reed were able to recreate the feeling at the Holler House with the students closer to the action then we might actually have a home court advantage. However, I'm not sure if those paying for these upgrades would be okay with making it more attractive for students to come to the games.

Granted these are some low grade renderings, but there are some potential changes if these are accurate.

Lower side line has a couple fewer rows than it currently has, no apparent connection to the upper seating because of a vertical wall. Potentially student seating on the sidelines? Students standing in those rows so they need that extra vertical clearance in the back row so they do not block sitting season ticket holders.

Looking at the baseline, that same vertical wall exists, and again no direct path from the upper seating to the lower seating. There are several fewer rows in the lower section than there are currently. Also it looks like they built the upper seating out a little which closes in the corner a little and covered the tarp area with seats.

I think it looks like the students may lose a lot of seating but gain sideline seats. The ends of the area will be much better but the upper deck sides do not see any improvements. Would be cool to have students on the one sideline and both ends.

The description of the project mentions absolutely none of the items you describe. Further food for thought, the renderings of this and the last Reed projects also show lush vegetation outside Reed.

And for a simple reality check, you aren't going to move the highest grossing tickets in the arena out and to the 2nd deck behind the basketball. 99% of the those donors and ticket holders will walk.

Student attendance is elastic. The current students have no connection to this current program. The issue is the product. When we were winning the student crowds were not a problem.

If you want to make basketball more part of student life, body put the arena near the MSC between the approximately 11,000 on campus students who live between Northside, Southside, and the Corps dorms instead of the current out of site, out of mind location.

I think this particular sentence in the only description of the project that I have seen is pretty broad and likely could include all of the items he described...

Quote:

This major upgrade will refresh our basketball arena to include premier seating and club areas with hospitality services. We will widen our concourse and open it up to improve access and viewing while visiting concessions. We will reconfigure how our arena looks on the inside and offer more dynamic and engaging visuals to bring a second-to-none experience to student-athletes and fans.

The key is for $125 million you get a real facelift similar to Hofheinz to Fertitta. Be at least twice thst and probably three times for a new basketball arena. But a new basketball arena could be a much better fit if it could be fit into east campus and likely would be more intimate but probably not multi-use.

I frankly just think Reed as it stands is meh outside to inside. So I worry about any fixes to that. Not quite as negative as sharp-dressed. But I understand why he wrote that.

But here is how I think about it long term: imagine Buzz gets everything shaped up and then demand goes through the roof. In about 10-15 years we will have the demand and support for a new look at it. The Fertitta approach could get a significant new donor directly supporting basketball, too, or a new corporate sponsor.

I don't know why our fanbase see renderings and immediately think they are the exact blueprints for construction

there are still some on premium complaining and butthurt over the maroon tower lights that where on the drawings for Kyle field and still think they're gonna get built.

If you only care about big time sports, why would baseball be included? Its a footnote sport nationally. You could argue track especially with NIL could be more meaningful face of the university than any baseball accomplishment by ANY program ever. I'd guess 30 million people AT LEAST worldwide was Athing Mu win the Olympic title in the 800m. If you took the sum of all unique people watching every college baseball game ever played (live or on TV), I doubt you'd get to 30 million.

Why are you comparing a college sport to the olympics? Seems odd. People weren't watching Athing because she is an Aggie

Still dont see the point of physically upgrading Reed. If you want to improve the quality of the refreshments, go ahead but adding an extra level, more premium seating etc, is a waste of time and money. Reed is good the way it is: you can get in and out in a timely manner, the concourses are fine and allow people to walk at a normal rate of speed and the seats are easily accessible unless you park on the wrong side of the building from where you sit. I like Reed; no reason to do anything to it. This is a college basketball arena folks, nothing more and it doesn't need to be anymore than what it is now. Hell, we used to sell this place out for a period of 3-5 years. Put a winning team out there, the support will come with it and that's all you need.

Done waste the coin. Add men's soccer instead along with a women's gymnastics team first.

And I'm a season ticket holder. The building is good as is.
Peace for Ukraine!

The concourse is absolutely not fine when people actually come to games. You must not have attended any in the Billy Clyde years. It was an absolute cluster**** in the concourse for sold out games.

Reed is mediocre normally, it absolutely sucks when its full. The bathrooms are a nightmare, the concessions take forever (especially if you want food that isn't awful), etc.

Anyone that thinks Reed is good "as is" either doesn't like our basketball program or has never been to a nice arena.

The goal of the arena should be to make the experience enjoyable for fans while also maximizing profits for the program. Reed doesn't do either of those things well.

LOL, yeah! It sucks to have to walk slowly towards the doors for a couple minutes rather than the 15 seconds it takes when nobody is there!

The biggest issue with the Reed concourses are (or were, Im assuming its still the same) the concession lines where you just line up straight out into the walkway for some reason.
