seemed destined to happen after his arrest. It's a shame. Really thought Starks would be the player who would benefit the most from the Coaching change.

TJ was going to either do what he wanted or play for a coach who wanted discipline especially on the defensive side.

Nope. That's not how team culture works. It's not a video game. BK had 7 years to ingrain his culture into our program. You think that just stops because he's gone?
It's going to take Buzz probably 2 years to uproot the weak-ass culture that BK left us with here.
I'm a weird person. I know how you feel on the matter and wondering how this would work in this situation. Prob better for another thread but it came up now. Does he lose all money for the year?
I'm surprised that someone hasn't challenged the "intent to distribute" laws. It has never made sense to me that someone simply having a certain quantity can determine their intent.

Depends on what model for paying players we're using.
TJ was on the team all summer and reports were that he bought in. Getting arrested for weed caused this and that is all on TJ. There's no doubt that we could have put a better team on the floor if we really wanted to, but that's the question isn't it. Does it hinder you in the long run to take those shortcuts now, or do you stick to your guns?

I put stuff like getting arrested on the player. Chandler, Mitchell, Nebo, Flagg...there are former Kennedy players on the team who are working hard. Let's not make up excuses for people who don't do basic things.Double Diamond said:

Edit: And I forgot Mark French. He's a walk-on from the Kennedy era who is working extremely hard for Buzz
Yeah, as soon as the hire was announced even the optimistic among us couched our hopes for Starks with "IF he can stick it out..." We were all skeptical that he actually would.
Buzz basically cleaned house, including the staff and supporting positions. With Starks leaving, we're down to 4 scholarship holdovers (Nebo, Chandler, Mitchell, Flagg) plus a couple walkons who will play. Are they weak, soft, whatever?Double Diamond said:

But there are numerous solid programs out there (not even just blue bloods) who don't seem to have this issue as much as we have over the past 8 years, whereas we've had it happen numerous times. Is that just coincidence?

Outside of Gilder, sure. They were "raised" by BK's system. They may not be "weak" or "soft", but what they are is "not very good".

When Buzz was hired, most expected a really good team this year. The thought was keep Gilder, keep most of the strong recruiting class BK had including Wheeler, add a grad transfer big to an already solid roster and we are definitely a NCAA quality team. And as Buzz is a better coach the BK, so we have a lot to look forward to in 2019-20.
Buzz's recruiting has left a lot to be desired. He didn't keep Gilder or Wheeler who are great character guys and whose basketball skills benefit any roster. We didn't add a grad transfer or the kid from Kansas.
A quick turnaround has now become a long turnaround. The excuse about building a solid foundation is bull. He missed on putting a better foundation in starting when he was hired. I believe he will get it done but the length of the rebuild was unnecessary and the fans aren't a real winner here.
When you aren't closely followimg those other teams, you tend to believe they don't have the same problems but they do.
I think what you're saying were expectations were optimistic hopes. Gilder was apparently not even considering staying, and Blackshear apparently wasn't considering us much either.
Buzz had to suspend a kid who was a projected starter pre-season at Virginia Tech for the entire season last year (Landers Nolley), because the kid did some knucklehead stuff.Tavares19 said:

I get what you are saying and largely agree. If anything about this makes me nervous, it's BCG's implosion in Kentucky after at less well regarded schools succeeding in getting players to subscribe to the discipline and control. I realize that the situation was likely caused by lack of self-discipline which on the surface at least we see very little basis for comparison.Gap said:

For me: we saw the same thing to an extent with Turgeon and Kennedy. It's part of the transition. But I hoped we would be better. And that's disappointing. So I'll keep hoping to see improvement. Buzz's resume deserves that. And...no...past results are not predictive of future results. But they're indicative of the approach and the potential for trajectory even if none is currently established.
