How was the roast a public event? I thought you had to pay to go. I didn't even realize it was covered by any media, I didn't think it was on TV.

People really need to get over themselves. Most of the people up in arms would not care if she said F the Jews or something esle, but only care because it was F Jesus.

Yea I wonder what would have happened if she said F*** Mohammid or Ala.

If she had said F Ala, the Crimson Tide folks would get pissed. I'm certain of it.

... First of all, you are ignorant.

Allah is Arabic for God. Arab Christians call God Allah as well.

Second of all, Muslims would take offense to anyone slandering Jesus. Jesus is the savior in more than one religion. We just don't regard him as the son of God.

Third of all, we're losing to Baylor... talk about something more important.

I'm offended that such a horse-face like Dana Jacobson is allowed to be on television. If anyone ever had a mug made for radio only, it's got to be her.

I guess that makes me sexist...oh well, I guess the 1st Amendment doesn't discriminate.

yet another example of the double standard tat ABC has (and the rest of the media for that matter)

quote:
ABC fired an actor because of an anti-gay comment, but gave anchorwoman who told an audience 'F---Jesus' what amounted to a one-week vacation.

Last June, when actor Isaiah Washington, star of ABC's show Grey's Anatomy, made an anti-gay slur in reference to openly homosexual T.R. Knight, the network immediately fired Washington.

But when ESPN (owned by ABC) anchorwoman Dana Jacobson publicly said "F--- Notre Dame," "F--- Touchdown Jesus" and finally "F--- Jesus," the network gave her a one week suspension. In essence, ABC gave Jacobson a one week vacation.

ABC has two standards, one for anti-gay comments and one for anti-Christian comments. Those who use anti-gay comments are punished. Those who use anti-Christian comments are supported.

As has been said, she's Jewish so I really doubt she cares.

This is such a non-issue. She said it at a roast and someone got offended, which is pretty much the point.

aggienk....

so you think it is ok for someone to say something about a gay person and get fired but the same company goes well beyond masking fun of a person and goes as far as to say f- Jesus and she gets a week off. I don't care whether or not both of them are fired or not fired but the point is there is clearly a double standard and you cannot deny that abc was two faced when they fired someone for saying something against gays but only give someone a week off for saying f- Jesus

AggieNK- You are right about one thing. It was supposed to be a roast. A facetious ceremonial tribute, usually concluding a banquet, in which the guest of honor is both praised and good-naturedly insulted in a succession of speeches by friends and acquaintances. She was to be roasting Mike Golic, not Jesus. This was not good-natured. It was not just an insult hurled at Mike Golic, but to every member of the Christian faith.

She has no business being on ESPN in the first place. She isn't attractive at all and her job is to ask Skip Bayless stupid questions which she manages to screw up.

Aston, ESPN can do what ever they want with her. I was referring to the organization that filed the complaint, but in turn they are free to do so because of their right to free speech even though they want to restrict it.
AggieDavid2006
How long do you want to ignore this user?
no one wants to restrict any speech.... they just want to be treated fairly and not with a double standard like imus getting fired for saying nappy headed hoes and the abc actor getting fired for saying something anti gay but yet that don't really care if someone says something anti-Jesus.... that is a double standard and we can sure point it out to them and anyone else.

^The organization is using the power of the free market and its own free speech right in making and publicizing its complaint.

The bottom line is we are talking about free speech done by two private entities. Both are free to say what they want. This happens every day and someone who "believes in the Constitution" will likely engage in it from time to time.

For example if Disney publicly supported Man-boy love organizations, I would tell others about it, take my money elsewhere, and try to influence Disney to get the person who made the decision fired. It doesn't mean I "don't believe in the Constitution." Precisely the opposite.

If you're so pissed don't watch ESPN anymore. Complaining on this board won't do anything.

Was the actor at a roast? I know Imus wasn't.

Except she was roasting someone and the others weren't. It's not a double standard if the circumstances are different.

Take out "Jesus" and insert "Mohammed" and this story would have a different spin.

She'd be fired, and her life would be in jeopardy, and the American PC would be groveling towards Mecca for forgiveness on her behalf.

you're crazy if you think a roast absolves you of all personal responsibility and you can say whatever you want. what if she said, "I know a muslim guy who is going to bomb you guys RIGHT NOW!!!" and then ran off the stage.

oh its a roast, no big deal. she wouldn't be charged for anything right? wrong.

Absolving personal responsibility? We're not talking about gun control, or child raising.

The lady made a joke that made people uncomfortable....that's what they do at roasts.

Seriously folks, have you never seen a roast before? They make off color comments and off color jokes with the sole goal of making people blush....that's what you do at a roast.

Check out Comedy Central. I don't know where you all live but it's channel 59 in Houston.

have you ever heard Don Imus before? He is paid to stir up controversy on a radio show. They make off color comments and off color jokes with the sole goal of making people blush....that's what you do on radio shows...... oh wait, Imus was fired for saying something "controversial" on his "controversial show".... tere is a double standard. You cant go to a roast or a radio show or even in private and say something anti black or anti gay because you will have the wrath of the media but you can say something like f- Jesus and it is ok because it is a comedy and on comedies you can say whatever you want... unless it is anti black or anti gay or anti jew and in that case it doesn't matter if it is a comedy or not...... basically, in a nutshell, YES THERE IS A DOUBLE STANDARD!

I don't think there is a reason to get wound-up over this, but I am trying to determine how this could possibly be reworded to be any less derogatory. What words could she have possibly chosen that would clarify her comments and make this sound any better?

And...

What does Jesus' race have to do with any of this?

Why do we value free speech but wish to punish someone for using it? I think this is #46,782 on the list of Really Important Things America Should Work On.

She was too drunk to remember the first rule of public speaking: Nothing fails like failed humor.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sucks that if you say anything close to derogatory about a minority group or a smaller religion you get crucified (yes, pun intended), but you can go way over the top against Christians or white folk and it can be "just a joke".

She should be fired and ridiculed, Don Imus style. Possibly tarred and feathered also.
