How long do you want to ignore this user?
Needing a little help here as I'm not a tequila fan at all.

I want to buy some friends a good bottle that's around $100 and was wondering if there's any recommendations on what to get. To make it even more difficult, I'm not sure which kind my friends normally drink.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Don Julio Reposado $95, Anejo a bit more
Class Azul REPOSADO $125

I'm no help. To tag on to this original request when making suggestions also include what is the best tequila for a simple 3-2-1 margarita.

Not going to say it's the best, but I buy the Legado Rep from Total Wine for my margs. $29 for 1.75

IMHO, using really good tequila in a margarita is just a waste/showoff. I wouldn't use anything better than 1800 at the absolute best. Cuervo gold is just FINE for margaritas.

I'm a big fan of Sauza Hornitos Reposado for margaritas. Reasonable price and pretty good quality.

For the OP, I agree with Don Julio. Hussong's Reposado is really good too, but I haven't had it in a long time.

A lot of party people like Patron, but it's very hit-or-miss for me. I've had Patron that's smooth and very good, and I've had bottles that were very harsh.

I always use a silver for margaritas and palomas. I like Espolon. Higher ends, Casa Noble, Don Julio, Patron. Tasty.

I like Espolon for margs as well.

Herredura Anejo for a good sipping tequila.

For 3-2-1:

Don Julio Silver is the best IMO but pricey.

Cazul Silver is very good and budget.

i prefer repesado even for margs

I don't think there can be a bad marg if you use real tequila, whatever the style. Just please tell me that you don't use a powdered mix!

I'm a big fan of Avion Repasado, although it's half the price of what you're looking to spend.

tequila, lime juice, orange liquor (Cointreau/GMarnier aren't worth the $ for me), simple syrup

i'll replace some lime/ssyrup with a splash of OJ, Pineapple, or Coconut Cream for a change every once in awhile

Wow sorry for the hi-jack

Thanks for the feedback

I made 3-2-1 (tequila-orange liqueur- fresh lime juice) margaritas this weekend and used a new tequila Exotico Blanco. That stuff was rough.

I usually make the 3-2-1 or the chispa 2-2-2 (same ingredients). The chispa is easier to get away with a strong flavored tequila, but the exotico was too much.

I appreciate the feed back.

Ya'll are making me thirsty. I sometimes use a little agave syrup, but try to stick to the old Cadillac Bar recipe: 2 parts tequila, 1.5 parts orange liquor, 1 part lime juice. Add to shaker with ice. Shake well, strain over ice. Salt optional.

Casa Noble anejo is around $60 and as good as anything in the hundred dollar range. Don Julio 1942 is great if you're willing to spend about $130. I haven't tasted anything better that wasn't over $200.

A great anejo tequila for sure

Have lately become a bigger tequila and marg fan,but rarely drink it straight. The normal o gotos above are good.

I have found I like the following for my margs silver or respasado (and it does make a difference to me)

Avion
Manik
Santos (mezcal is good too)
Casa dragones (only silver)
Casamigas (silver is good, respasado is really sweet and Carmel tasting zero burn. Too sweet to use by itself, but 50/50 is a different tasting marg - drinking it right now.)

For my bulk frozen batches I usually use El jimador respo or 1800 respo. El jimador has a slightly spicy flavor.

Where the hell are you paying $95 for Don Julio Reposado... is that a misprint?! That's a $50ish bottle all day every day. The Clase Azul does run over $100 but sometimes you can get it for just over vs. 25 over 100. That's a "Twin Dollar Days" buy (when the resume Dollar days).

Meh. I don't even buy any Tequila that's not 100% de agave (Cuervo Gold is not). If it doesn't say 100% de agave they are adding grain alcohol.

I do agree that putting anejo in a marg is a waste, but Cuervo Gold is ass.

For near the same price I like Casa Noble over Don Julio anejo. I tried the Fortaleza Anejo but it didn't do much for me...ymmv.

I personally like good tequila in a hand mixed margarita with lime and agave syrup...but I make mine with double alcohol. I can tell the difference from the lower tier stuff.

Have you had Agavero Orange Liqueur? I did a blind test w/ a marg made w/ that vs. Cointreau and it was way better.

For an all-rounder at a great price point for use in a margarita, paloma, etc, Olmeca Altos is about $25

For something a bit better and a little bit more, there's Tromba which is distilled by the guy who distilled the first batch of modern day Don Julio

Mi Campo is finished in chardonnay barrels and is fun to play with.

I'm not a huge tequila guy so I don't spend much money on it, tend to like highland tequilas rather than the more vegetal lowland ones. My other two reccos are Herradura and Hussong's

Oh, I had the exact opposite reaction. I hated it. For a triple sec for a margarita I like Pierre Ferrande Dry Curacao, Mathilde Orange Liqueur, or Gran Gala if I'm going less dry.
