Honestly, as one that eats it too, me too. I don't understand it, and I think a lot is nostalgia. I cognitively know it's not good, but I add some garlic and onion powder, and I enjoy it despite knowing it's bad.

Same here for when I go to my parent's house at Christmas and shovel as much velveeta and salsa queso into my face, even though I know there's many ways to make a better one.

So, followed the recs here and picked up a jar of Mateo's Hatch Chile salsa, and it's pretty damn good. I typically make my own, but there is definitely some nostalgia to just grabbing a jar and going out to the patio with a bag of chips.

So queso is about the only avenue for which I find pace acceptable

And by acceptable I mean palatable

Pace medium or hot is really hard to beat. When I lived overseas I could not get salsa or the ingredients. I would have someone bring a huge plastic jug of pace when they came over.

Gotta admit, I still love pace on scrambled eggs.

1st time I stayed at an Embassy Suites on vacation w/my grandparents to Colorado Springs when I was 10 they had it on the breakfast buffet.

I asked my grandparents why on earth a big bowl of salsa was there and they said people put it on eggs.

Still love it on them to this day.

If we don't make our own we buy the H-E-B fresh salsa in the produce section. We prefer their Ranchera style but their hot and medium salsas are great as well. We also keep a jar of Kylito's in the pantry for emergencies.

Not a very good selection out here in Oregon, but we do get Mrs Renfros. That stuff is pretty good. We bought Joe Ts or Marks when back in Texas.

I like the Texas Texas Roasted Addition stuff. Not sure if anyone besides HEB carries it, but it's damn good with the HEB yellow corn (round) tortilla chips.

Best stuff you can get at HEB.....the Cremosa is really awesome. The Roja is great as well. Pretty freaking authentic Mexican flavors.

Didn't have any Mateo's, but I did a blind taste test with what I had on hand:

Kylito's
Clint's Restaurant Salsa
Herdez Salsa Casera
Mark's Roasted

Verdict:

1. Kylito's
2. Herdez
3. Clint's
4. Mark's

When tasted one after another, Mark's was really lacking.
