How long do you want to ignore this user?
This thread is just about logistics... please don't derail it TIA

Late in may, my wife and I are going to be in Austin and want to get up and go to Franklins.

Do we need to be inline before 9am?

Follow-up:
If I get up early (and let her sleep in) will folks around me throw a fit if she comes and gets in line around 10 or so?

I'd get there before 9 to be safe...

I'd give you crap if you were ahead of me, but a beer would smooth it over... One time I had one person in front of me turn in to 14. And they didn't have beer...

Yes before 9

I went on a Tuesday (slow day I believe) in Summer last year and got there at 8:30-ish. We ate at 12:45. I hate lines and avoid them at all costs...I would do it again it was so good.

I would do a few things differently:
- Go with 4 people so we could play dominoes
- Take chairs/table
- Take beers

What crock said.... Think if it as tailgating for food.

According to the Franklin BBQ Line Twitter feed, Wednesday is the least crowded. If follow it to get a feel for how long the line has been and go from there.

So you'd really get pissed over some guy saving a spot for his wife? 14 I understand, but his wife? Seems a little extreme.

Thanks all! 8am it is.

No... I really wouldn't. If we are already chatting ahead of time (which usually happens) I'd give you a good natured ribbing. If you just let people know ahead of time they're usually cool with it. Seriously... Everyone who has ever done that to me has offered me a beer as "payment".

Now if you caused me to be one person behind the last to get brisket sign...

I'd get there shortly before 9.

It really doesn't matter if a person hops ahead of you in line, because they come out and ask you order to estimate in the beginning. It would be worse for you if one person ordered $500 in food, than a group of 10 cutting and ordering $25 worth a piece.

1. Smoke out (no, not like that) overnight. Your BBQ doesn't have to be amazeballs, but just pretty damn good.

2. Arrive with an ice chest full of BBQ and begin nibbling on your treats in front of everyone.

3. After 20 minutes or so prop up a cardboard sign, saying "BBQ - 5 dollars a plate, no line"

4. Everyone in line fills up on your stuff or is miserable watching you.

5. Other folks order less Franklins, you make money a little money and you enjoy the recreation of pissing people off.

EDIT: 6. Bring leftover BBQ (Franklins or your own) to your buddy in SA.

I would laugh and heave insults at you for thinking your BBQ was comparable to Franklin's.

I think the sign should say "not amazeballs bbq"

Meh. I wouldn't be able to hear it over all my smacking.

I would never wait in line 5+ hours for food.

If it wasn't a relaxed atmosphere where I am drinking beer, playing dominos and making friends, I would agree with you.

But it is, so I dont.

3 and a half hours for food? I bet McDonalds would taste amazing after that long a wait. Add on top of that drinking, surely your judgement isn't clouded.

100% agree. Its basically tailgating only with the main event being BBQ. If you can't have fun waiting for Franklin's you are probably strung a little tight for me

Is it still pleasant to wait five hours for food in August?
Keeper of The Spirits
How long do you want to ignore this user?
With cold enough beer, a nice hat and some sunscreen, it's fun in August as well. Just as tailgating in August is fun. It's Texas, It's hot

So if you want to be first in line, what time do you get there? And what time do you get served?
agcrock2005
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Really early, but why would you want to do that if you can get there at 8 and eat 15 mins after the crazy people that get there really early?
agcrock2005
How long do you want to ignore this user?
And you'll get served at 11 when they open obviously.

Set up a hammock the night before... When they open the doors, so 11.

Actually... 4 or 5 am would probably get it done.

Has it really gotten that bad? When I went like 3 years ago I think it only took an hour and a half or so after getting in line around 10
Stoli7
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Went today. Got in line at 915 ate at 1245

Worth the wait! The brisket was the best thing I've ever had. The ribs were really good too!

Fun atmosphere of chatting with strangers and drinking beer.
