Basically 10% off, 225+tax. It's my dad's favorite.

Online shop. The Chappellets aren't magnums. They just put their Pritchard Hill Cab in a big bottle as they do their Cab Franc. I do have some Chappellet mags too tho

Had Krug for my first and so far only time last year on a work trip. It was superb, lived up to the billing.

Yep, this was the 170th. I got the last bottle at a Sigels/Twin Liquors in Dallas according to their computer. I have had it a number of times and loved it.

One time in NYC I found a wine shop that had half bottles for less than half the price of the full bottle, might be worth looking for as well. The person working there pointed it out to me and acted like it was a pricing oddity from Krug itself rather than store policy but I don't know that for sure.

Back to the Scarecrow e-mail -

Apparently they needed to sell some wine - got all the way down to myself and they sold the entire wish list.

Odd thing is/was, about 2 months ago I asked if I could buy some of their wine and auction it off at a charity thing I am in charge of (wasn't asking for anything for me or for free) and they said no way - nothing at all for sale.

Then this list comes out and they played whack-a-mole with me.

being "sold out" is a huge mktg effort for wineries.... most are rarely really sold out

Yup. "Sold out" means "we're not selling any more right now." It doesn't mean "we don't have any".

I'm often "sold out" of wines that I have a case of on the shelf in front of me.

Right. But I wouldn't say it's a marketing gimmick or anything like that. I mean there are legit reasons to keep wines in your library.

Definitely not a gimmick.

I see more and more allocated wines where the emails sure seem to have at list a hint of if not desperation, at least angst and getting orders.

And many times I'll say, "yes, we have some, but it's in the library and can't be sold right now."

What shop has old A Raf?? That's a very nice find.

I've recently started buying a small lot of Continuum new releases which share a very similar site with Chappellet, which has a great wine growing providence IMO.

I've been able to hold off so far but I do enjoy perusing the collection emails.

It's actually been Envoyer that killed me last year. I bought lots of champagne, BDX, and some older Napa cabs. But this was easily passed over today:

I can't believe they bottled the 2020 vintage

That's ridiculous. They shouldn't be shilling a 2020. Just trying to squeeze $$$ out of people. But, I guess if you're going to spend 2.5 grand on a bottle, doesn't matter much whether or not the producer is trying to pull a quick one on you or not. It's already been pulled.

2020 wasn't a bad year if you picked pre fire. Not many did but the ones that did made great wine that I've tasted.

Of all the places I'm a member of or have a relationship with, only one has bottled their 2020. It is highly rated and they insist it is great and passes a blind taste test, but from what little I know and have been taught about wine the smoke taint could appear at any time even if it's not there now.

If any winery could afford to skip a vintage it's Screaming Eagle but they bottled anyway.
cecil77

The difficulty is that smoke taint can take 2-3 years to show. They're selling the wine now. Most labels don't want to risk that. Maybe Screagle doesn't care.

Roy Piper did a nice video on smoke taint and why even though his number looked good, he didn't release. I'll see if I can find it.

I only bought two 2020 Napa wines (total of 13 bottles), for immediate consumption at parties we host. They'll be gone by the end of the summer.

Edit: I think this is it: https://vimeo.com/707383456

The self proclaimed smartest people in the world turned out to be a group of herd followers. Now it looks like they're dead set on taking out First Republic tomorrow.

If they were smart and had an insured cash sweep, they're likely ok. If not, the big conglomerates are going to be swooping in and picking up some brands on the cheap.

Yeah, just placed another order yesterday. Bought 12 of their back vintage Napa Cabs between $70-$100. Chimney Rock, Cliff Lede, Phelps, Revana, Ramey, Pride Mtn

Tasting at Truett Hurst this afternoon. If you ever happen to be in Dry Creek Valley and want to taste some wine but have some family and young ones along, this is a great place to go. Beautiful backside of the property that butts up to the (Not So) Dry Creek. Easy environment for young ones.

The wines were good, better across the board than what I was expecting. Came home with a bottle of Zinfandel, would have gotten more if I had more cellar room.

it is a very important bank for all the smaller vintners out there.. The guy who ran the wine business has a blog post about it. Rob McMillan on Wine

Feels like a lot of folks not taking their allotments - stuff is being circulated all over the place.

Also, think a lot of Napa operations were linked to SVB - so probably more "offerings" to come.
