Scarecrow release is today. It is quite possibly my last purchase from them. Prices are absurd.

Yep, last year to keep them. I'm thinking it's time to start flipping them next year.

I flip 3 bottles for a small markup to help offset the cost of my other three pack but dang. This is getting out of hand. No 2020 vintage so at least I'll get a reprieve there. But I seriously doubt I'll buy 2021. In fact, a few more may be culled too. Backfilling 20-25 year old BDX and champs seems to be my focus going forward.

if I can ask, how are you buying the older champagne? are you just buying Salon? Cause that's out of my league, but some other vintage stuff is of interest to me....

Curious. Can you still flip them for a profit with their current release+shipping prices? As I understand it, the demand has drastically shrunk in conjunction with the price increases. I was only on the waiting list 2-3 years several years ago and passed due to the increases while I waited. As I understand it, prices have only went up since. What do you need to get to break even? $600/bottle?

Edit-just ran over to winebid and the 2017 is listed for $645. After auction fees, that's gotta be a net loss, right?

I wish I was buying Salon. I usually just get one bottle of each vintage on those and then I'll get an older bottle to drink off a wine list or a retailer (in anticipation of an event). Mainly I'm buying from retailers that are brining in cellars. Dom, Cristal, Tatt, etc.

I'm making about $115 per bottle on the ones I flip. That essentially brings one of my bottles down to $175. I think you could get $7-800 on better vintages. Flipping wine isn't really worth it to me but the group that buys my Scarecrow extras makes it easy.

With that said, I've seen some Realm Absurd prices in the $1400 area I'd certainly entertain selling at those levels.

Does anyone have any recent experience with shipping times from Europe? I have an order from a winery in Montalcino that left Italy on 1/27, and it's still en route to the west coast distribution center.

Looks like my wine is in LA and should be delivered to my office on Monday. If that happens we'll be looking at 28 days door to door. I guess I'm going into work next week…

Specifically, I watch Benchmark and Envoyer. If y'all know any good shops, I'm all ears. It's amazing how much prices have jumped lately. It's rather ridiculous.

champagne has gotten crazy this past year.... I just don't understand, tbh still some good stuff in that $60-80 range for well done NV stuff from some smaller producers, but man, starts jumping pretty quick

An '07 Esprit de Beaucastel for the 15-year wedding anniversary. I need to find more of this because this can go another 10 years easily.

I'm in the Tour St Christophe wine club. They use FedEx and it's usually about a week. A couple of times there's been permit hiccups along the way, but always in two weeks.

Closing on a new house tomorrow and knew I had to have it when I walked in and the first thing I saw was a temperature controlled wine room. Can't wait to fill this thing up enough so I have to get a ladder. Maybe I put the good stuff that needs age on top so I'm not as tempted to grab one every Friday night.

On a related note, anyone want to buy an almost brand new 155 bottle wine fridge I don't need anymore?

Nice, you better up your wine budget.

It needs more champagne bottles storage. They suck to store in bins.

This is the model, although mine is stainless rather than black. It looks like the stainless isn't on their website anymore.

Edit: The door is stainless and the sides are black. It is front vented so it can be freestanding or used as a built in

I've always thought that the two biggest threats to the jewels of a collection are a really good Saturday night or a really bad Tuesday night.

Been trying to ignore it, but I'm confronted with that age old wine quandry.

Buy another chiller or drink faster?

That's awesome. Great buy!

Now I'm regretting not putting one in our new build.

Same spot. We like our street and most of our neighbors and want to stay there. We just got into a rental and the old house is about to come down.

Jumper, yeah. You're right but it's too late now. Unless I ditch my office/work space and build one there. My wife will work from the study so it's already office-like there. And who needs two offices???

in honor of this, I just ordered a few Gimonnet '14 Chouilly special club offerings... pricing not too crazy on these smaller guys, yet, although rising

We bought this bottle 4 years ago, to be opened on our 5 year anniversary.

Modus is a favorite at our house, we have a connection with the owner/wine maker, and love his stuff. He's from dallas, and we hang out from time to time here and in napa.

He gets about 1-2 barrels per year from a Cooper in France from specific trees that are 300-400 years old. This is the first we've opened from this collection.

We are fortunate to both have plenty of opportunities to drink great wine with our collection, our jobs, and our friends. This bottle is way way up there.

My wife has a much better palate than I do, and she puts this as her #1 of all time. It's slightly behind the 2014 scarecrow to me. I've got 1 more of these, 1 2014 from a similar reserve barrel release, and a half dozen scarecrow to go..we'll find out over the years.

We paired this with Waygu filets, creamed spinach, and smashed rosemary potatoes…pics later.

Finishing up 4 days of tasting in Paso Robles.

Here were the highlights:
- Herman Story - Russell's wines are always in your face but a good place to wake up your palate
- Desparada - V's wine is so different from Russell's. Can't imagine their dinner table discussions.
- Nicora - This was a new one that didn't disappoint. The GSM was fantastic. Some nice cool climate Syrah's that my wife liked but they were club only.
- Benom - We've been members here since 2018. Always good.
- Cordant /Nelle - Members here. The head winemaker Tyler recently left. Will be interesting to see if anything changes.
- Paix Sur Terre - Fantastic little winery in a gorgeous location. Served up some unique single varietals like Grenache Blanc, Picpoul Blanc, and Ugni Blanc. Crazy QPR. All around $35 ($27 member pricing). Probably the highlight visit of the week.
- Villa San Juliette - Great views, not a fan of the experience. Very commercial. Felt like a restaurant with a waiter bringing us wine from time to time.
- Torrin - Top notch Pinots from Santa Barbara and Bien Nacido. Great Rhine blends for members.
- Clos Solene - Members here since 2017. Excited to hear they are expanding and planning to build a cave tasting room.

Enjoying the sunset in San Simeon with a bottle that wouldn't fit in the suitcase.
