Offsite storage. If there's a lot of wine and the room is well insulated, that's a significant heat sink. As long as the room stays sealed (i.e. they're not blowing hot air from a non-running compressor into the space) it would take a long time for the temperature to move much at all.

We had a piquette discussion a while back, right? Anyways, just read this article and figured some of y'all might find it interesting.

Quote:

Mass-production of classic Piquette, without additions of other fruits or fillers, would be a challenge, Lapalus notes. Most producers currently making it (the vast majority of whom are based in North America and Australia) are making it on micro-scales of hundreds, or single-digit thousands of bottles and cans. Hard seltzer, meanwhile has sold $2.7 billion worth of product in the 52-week period ending June 13, 2020 alone, according to Nielsen.

Just getting through some wine reading tonight and saw this as well. I know there was some recent talk of Pinot Noir clones within types of grapes, maybe when we were tallking about Oregon? Anyways, I found this article to be a good piece on Pinot Noir clones. There is a lot of information here on the subject.

Good article thanks!

If you talk among winemakers now, clonal characteristics are discussed every bit as much as varietal characteristics. So much of what has historically been attributed to vineyard location has actually been clonal differences, that were largely unknown and unexplored until 40 years ago. Burgundy was first w/ Chard and Pinot, but now Bordeaux varieties provide many choices of clones, each with their own traits. Burgundies are all multi-clone wines now, I assume Oregon is as well. Massal selection, over decades did much the same thing, many vineyards in Burgundy were actually growing very different grapes (different clones) but they didn't know it and ascribed the differences to "soil and climate".

One thing the article didn't mentioned is that is wasn't only phylloxera that drove change in Burgundy, two world wars also destroyed much of eastern France.

William & Mary order is in. I went heavy on the cabs and got my traditional amount of the Prop. Good friend and good wine...easy choice.

I prefer the Prop, although I wish the Cab Franc was a little less ripe, but that's the Napa style I guess.

Will be interesting to see if the Napa Cab is a bargain at that price...

Interesting that you say that. My friends down the street also said they prefer the Prop. I may check in on one this weekend and add on to the order if I feel the same.

I imagine there is some kind of seasonality in what we're all drinking. Summer probably more white and rose and lighter reds, holidays and winters maybe the bigger reds. Questions for the thread!

  • Do you have a seasonality in your wine drinking? Varietal, maybe even amount, etc.
  • If so, what are you into in the fall?

For me, I really like sauvignon blanc, however I really only find myself wanting it around summer time. Doesn't sound as good to me in January. I will drink Pinot year round, and Zinfandel is one I think I can have year round as well. I probably have more cab/syrah/etc. between October and March than I do between April and September.

As for the fall, I start getting more into some Italian reds this time of year.

I will drink a little rose and more crisp whites in summer, and I definitely drink more syrah in the winter. Everything else is 24/7/365.

I grabbed a few of the Napa. Decided to forego the other two, but i give myself 50/50 odds that I'll break and place another order before the window closes.

Speaking of fall orders, my shipment from Pott just showed up. It's going to be a good weekend!

Same for me. More rose' and white in the summer, and reds all the time. Also, rose' and whites are afternoon wines for me, with reds in the evenings.

None are hard and fast rules, but more just trends.

I think that's really the way wine drinking should work. Along with having a different wine each course of a meal.

Sadly, Diana and I have, as is too common, settling into the "big red rut". We're trying. We opened a Sauv Blanc with green enchiladas last night. Good with the meal, but we're still not there just enjoying the vast variety of wines.

There's only the two of us, so we can't do the "different wine for each course" thing.

We can gas and seal bottles that keep indefinitely, but yeah "leftover wine" is problematic.
MooreTrucker

LOL, we joke about "what is leftover wine" all the time. We have a Savino that we use, and some things called RePours that help, but it's hard to justify opening more than a couple of bottles at a time.

Invite friends over! It's slowed down dramatically with my decrease in consumption and my wife pregnant (plus damn covid), but nothing better than inviting 2-4 people over for a 3-5 course meal with wine pairings.

Pretty sure everything but the Napa cab is sold out. I think his estate cab sold out in about 8 hours.

That winery I posted about a while ago that does the Carbonique Macerated Grenache and the Piquet... those are perfect summer wines (for me). Will move more into Pinots, Grenache Syrahs, and GSMs as we get cooler.

Agreed, Grenache is a great warm weather option. I got a case of half bottles last year of some Australian Grenache and it was great by itself or with food.

Anyone have any wine podcasts they recommend?
A golf podcast that I listen to had a level 3 sommelier on it with a cool breakdown of the wine industry in Napa. I realized I could listen to several more episodes of that.

Interesting I'll have to check it out. I've listened off and on to a few wine podcasts over the years.

- Wine for Normal People: Have listened to for a while but I'm going here less frequently in the last year or so. Should be able to look back in the catalog and pick and choose topics that interest you fairly easily. Contrary to the title of the podcast, the host can be a little but snobby actually. She wasn't always that way though. Good info in an easy to listen to format. She also has an east coast bias, so you may hear about VA and NY wine more than is warranted for sure.

- Guild of Sommerliers Podcast: Less frequent episodes. They do a lot more interviews than the Normal People podcast. Touches a broad base of topics (for instance there was a tea episode and sake episode)

- Inside Winemaking: This is a true nerd out podcast. If there is a winemaker or winery though that you want to find out more about, and they're interviewed here, I would for sure listen. A winemaker runs the podcast and the winemakers are interviewed definitely can get really technical but they also can release a lot of unique and insightful info this way.

- SOMM TV: I like this one a lot. A newer podcast. But a bit more focused on sommeliers, restaurants, serving, and food than the others.

- I'll Drink to That: Haven't listened to in a while. Again though, if you see that he is interviewing a person or discussing a topic that interests you, may be worth a listen.

I think that's it for me!

I'll preface by saying I still listen to wine for normal people, have heard every one of her episodes, have her book, etc. But she definitely can be snobby. And she can be especially so in a hipster, I'm cooler than you because I dislike what all the "cool" kids like kind of way. If that makes sense. Like her constant bashing of Napa, it's off putting. I also don't agree with everything she says. But I still like the way she lays it out for me to comprehend. I just decide for myself what to take away from it. Her podcast has led me to try many, many varietals and regions.

Somm, I've had that on my list to start. Just haven't been driving as much so am way behind on podcasts and audiobooks.
