Anyone interested in a 170+ year old whiskey aged at the bottom of Lake Michigan?

Quote:

The story starts on an ill-fated evening in December of 1854. A passenger steamer called The Westmoreland foundered in the frigid waters of northern Lake Michigan. In addition to the 17 lives lost that night were the contents of the ship's hull, which included 280 barrels worth of whiskey.

...

And it's not just collectors who are clamoring for a taste. As first reported by The Mirror, earlier this month, Richardson says that a regional distillery wants to salvage the juicefor scientific research. "The genetic makeup of corn was much different in 1854 and may have had a different taste to today's corn," he told the newspaper.

Traverse City Whiskey Co. would be the most likely candidate for this sort of project. One of Michigan's largest craft distilleries, it sits mere miles from the site of the wreck.

I can imagine how any of the barrels would have remained water proof after all of this time but it will be interesting to see if anything even comes of this.
That's awesome! I hope the wood sealed well enough to keep the juice free from seawater. If so.... DAYUM, could be some great stuff.... or absolute dog ****e.... like what is available @ every liquor store under various labels

Lake Michigan is freshwater.

If the depth didn't have enough O2 the that should inhibit organisms that would have degraded and consumed the wood. There's enough evidence that the oak should be in fine shape given there's a cottage industry that salvages entire trees on the bottom of the Great Lakes that sank over the last century + and they're milled into useful lumber.

Why do people dislike Weller Special Reserve? The availability and cost of it in Texas is great.

Is it too readily available? Not rare enough for your palate?

I'm thinking it's the screw cap for me lol! It really ruins the experience.

All joking aside, I will drink it, I'm just not going to go out of my way to get one. I prefer the regular Buffalo Trace, WT 101 and Russell's 10 to the WSR.

in the late 80s early 90s there used to be a billboard in San Antonio advertising Weller (drink a Weller & Water) just south of the Airport right next to one for a Chrysler LeBaron (fast, cheap, & topless). Seeing those two things adversited in conjunction with each other has always shaped my perception of Weller, and not for the good.

I think a large part of the hate is because it was one of a sea of generic bottom shelf bottles that exploded in popularity and that the quality doesn't necessarily live up to the hype of the name (i'd say the same thing about BT).

Personally I think Weller SR is fine, have a bottle on the shelf, and would certainly buy another at MSRP if i see one but its not something i'll ever go out of my way to seek out just like i wouldn't hunt a bottle of the base Four Roses or Elijah Craig Small Batch. So in essense while it isn't bad it just doesn't live up to the hype which will lead to some backlash.

MSRP at $185 for a 10 year old bourbon. Is it really going to be that much better than Eagle Rare at $39?

At basically the same proof as ER i just don't see any reason to buy this personally unless you want it as some kind of collectable.

I've drank enough Sunny Brook to last me a life time.

I've never had Old Crow but thanks for the suggestion. I'll pick it up today and have a pour or two during the basketball game tonight.

I freaking love it! I just do.

It's still a fairly rare find in my NE Houston neighborhood, so I buy whatever is available when I come across it.

Makers is m backup - I'm just a fan of wheaters.

Dang. Well it's pretty abundant in Austin.

I'd be happy to collect a few bottles for those who can't get it. I go to Houston a few times a year. Work in San Antonio and Round Rock

It's not readily available in the Metroplex. I did have some at a whiskey bar last night and really enjoyed it. Definitely on the lookout for a bottle or two at retail.

If anyone has trouble finding it and wants WSR, I've got a 1.75L in College Station for you at retail ($50) or swap. I don't need this one after I got gifted another 750ml at Christmas

Gotcha. My twins was out just now sorry.

She actually said since the Sazerac/RND split they haven't had much come in if any at all.

Liquor Depot in Giddings had a ton.

I'll be on the look out.

Early Times BiB > Weller SR evvvvvvvveryday

Not really a comparison IMO.

ET BiB is a much better pour. At a lower price. And a slight higher proof. And always on the shelf.

10-4. Diff strokes for diff folks. I find Weller SR to lack depth and character. Just my take. But it's popular for some.
