There was one of these at Dorignacs in New Orleans a few months ago. Don't remember the price, but I think it was somewhere around $3k.

I can look, but it won't be until next weekend.
I just picked up some 4 roses single barrel the other weekend at king soopers. It's 100 proof, which I'm guessing isn't the barrel strength version.

Specs on Texas @ Harvey had Weller SR, 1L & 1.75L bottles on the shelves today. Picked up the 1.75 for $39. Quite happy.

Had pours of WLW, TH Saz, Old Fitzgerald 13 year BiB, and Pappy 12. We drank the last of the WLW and Old Fitzgerald so they let us keep the bottles!

Edit: This was at Pappas Bros near the Galleria.

That was my fear. I was gifted one several years ago. I am basically stuck with an undrinkable bottle.

Why is it undrinkable? Open it and pour a glass.

Don't recall the exact cost... Somewhere between $2,000 and $3,000. Bought it for my buddy in December 2018.

Don't mean to sound ungrateful. My buddy bought it back in 2010-2011 for under $100. Gave it to me as a groomsman's gift a few years later. I've had it going on 6 years.

My hesitancy comes from opening my bottle of PVW23 when I passed the bar. We had a few glasses then put it away for "special occasions." You can guess what happened next. Feels weird just to drink a $3k bottle of bourbon for the hell of it. But don't want it to get skunky, either.

1st world problems. I sound like a real a-hole. Apologies.

I procured a bottle of PVW 23... my dad passed away later that evening. In fact, I had to get my wife to pick it up so I could be with my dad. Undrinkable bottle.

For those in DFW that want to pay stupid prices I was driving around Allen and saw a mom and pop (Indian **** hole) liquor store so I decided to see if they had any of the crap that you can't find anymore. In the case near counter they has the following:

Willet Family Estate
W12
EHT Rye
WSR
Little Book
Blantons
Kentucky Owl

I asked how much the W12 was and he said that you had to buy a bundle of 3. The case was arranged so that if I wanted the W12, I had to also buy an EC select batch and some other ****ty bottle for $229. All of the others mentioned above were the same. There was Blantons, WSR and some crap bottle for $300.

It's Allen Liquor 4 U in Allen.

I had some last weekend at a blind tasting with the Brazos valley bourbon society. I liked it a lot.

We bought a bottle at total wine earlier this week.

Part of me wishes that Texas would form it's own persona with whiskey. My preference would be a law that says for a bourbon to be considered a Texas bourbon it has to have at least 51% wheat and aged at least 2 years in Texas oak barrels.

Unpossible. Bourbon is defined by federal law as corn whiskey. Texas can't redefine it to mean wheat whiskey.

Also, you would want to be very careful about aging in Texas oak. There's a reason the law requires bourbon to be aged in American White Oak. White Oak has a higher vanillin content than other oak species, and is also less porous and contains less of the astringent tannic qualities found in other oaks.

The ideal range for American White Oak is along the western Appalachians. I think they do grow some on the very eastern edge of Texas, but I don't know if the warmer climate and different soil would have an impact on the wood as far as whiskey aging is concerned. But any other type of oak is going to yield a fairly unpleasant result.

Then, of course there's the lack of seasonal shift in the Texas climate. The temperature swings of having four distinct seasons in a place like Kentucky or Tennessee is what forces the whiskey to interact with the wood barrels as seasons change. Texas is just hot most of the year. Maybe somewhere is the panhandle might be ok, but I expect the Angel Share loss in such an arid climate would be huge.

Bought a bottle last night at Angel's Liquor in Plano. Have tried it once, and really enjoyed it.

Miss my dad, but not opening the PVW is on me. Thought about pouring a drink every year for him, but bourbon is meant to be shared, so I am stuck.

Yep. Also, I have yet to taste a Texas whiskey worth a ***** My belief is it is too hot in the summers and not cold enough in the winters to create a decent rickhouse. And I don't know of any cooperage making Texas oak barrels.

Brain fart on calling it a bourbon. Should have said whiskey.

And I didn't consider most of the rest of your answer. I'm not as nuanced on the wood barreling process. That definitely makes sense and would seem to nip the idea in the bud real quick.
