It's Old Fitzgerald whiskey. Probably worth about $1000 but that's a guess. It is Stitzel Weller juice.

What's everyone's favorite bourbon for an old fashioned?

I have made them with basil Hayden's before and thought it was pretty damn good. Can definitely reach for something a little cheaper though. Any of the cheaper ryes should be pretty tasty as well

I actually bought some Jim Beam Bottled in Bond a month or so ago after doing some reading about BIB bourbons. One thing they mentioned is how they make for better cocktails because of the higher alcohol and can be more flavorful. Made an old fashioned with one that was damn tasty.

Not bourbon, but been really enjoying Rittenhouse Rye for my cocktail making as of late. Especially old fashioned and sours.

I'll second that. Rittenhouse holds up well in almost any whiskey cocktail.

4th. And, believe me, I'd be happy to take a fifth...

I use baby Saz for Sazeracs, Old Fashioned's, Manhattans, etc just because that's what I keep on hand at all times. Rittenhouse is the other I would keep. Little higher proof. Heck, Old Overholt is a basic bar pour and is pretty good too.

Making it with THH is decadent. Gloriously good, but decadent.

I don't really drink Handy any other way but in cocktails.

That is a baller cocktail. I've made a Sazerac with THH once, and it was great, but I prefer to save it for sipping neat.

First thing I did with the Handy I got before was sip it neat. Second thing I did was make a Sazerac. And a Manhattan. They were amazing.

5th'd on the Rittenhouse. Best cocktail whiskey you'll see on a store shelf.

Ha! The cheaper ryes I was talking about was baby saz and Rittenhouse. He asked for bourbon though so I mentioned basil Hayden's cause of its high rye content.

Old Grand Dad 114 is another good cocktail option. High rye content and 114 proof for ~$22. Makes a damn fine Manhattan.

Anyone know much about the JE Fitzgerald Very Special 20 year? A local store is supposed to get a bottle and the guy seemed to think it would be $100/375ml - I read the MSRP is more like $300... either way that's a lot of money for half a bottle of booze. Wondering if it's even worth consideration at $100 because there is no way I'm doing $300. It's supposed to be SW juice so folks will probably be crazy for it.

If you don't buy it then purchase and I will give you $120

Had a guy quote me $310 which he said was just above cost. If you can score one for $100, jump all over it.

Jsn1986,
I will go retail $300 on the Fitzgerald if you're about to score it for $100. PM me when you find out the cost.

Anyone had Russell's Reserve 1998? Found a bottle for $250 and seems way too high. Also had a bottle of Wild Turkey 17 year but had some of that this past weekend and it's not worth the price IMO.

I just received a bottle of 1998, but haven't cracked it open yet. Supposed to be much better than the Masters Keep 17 year.

And yes, $300 on the J.E. Fitzgerald.

In reality, anything over $50 is over-priced. This bourbon craze has gotten freaking ridiculous. I see people paying $75 for bottles of Weller 12.

Weller 12 is the cheap bottle I keep. People are paying that much for it?!? Good Lord!

I've seen it. I'm guessing it's guys that just caught on to the fad who are willing to pay anything FOR anything.

How does weller 12 compare to a premium bourbon like woodford reserve or makers mark?
Mathguy64

Nuts. Just nuts. It's water, corn, rye/wheat, yeast, heat, a barrel and time. I get that it takes experience to know how to make it taste good but the raw ingredients are dirt cheap. And it's basically the same ingredients no matter if you make Ancient Age or GTS. The only differences are the recipe and time and location in the rick house.

Personally, I'd put them all in the same group, but that's just me.

Woodford and makers are premium??

Weller is better, hands down.

Agree with Whoop.
The Makers guys consulted with Pappy before starting up; recipes for Makers and Weller Special Reserve are said to be same.

Never been impressed with Woodford unless it's Double Oaked.

A really good barrel of Weller 12 stays in the racks and becomes WLW or Pappy.
