"A couple months later, they don't even have to "draw my name" to get Blanton's, Eagle Rare, MKH 10, etc. if they have it. The connect will just escort me back. Anyhow, reading this, it seems I've got a nice small collection and WONDERFUL connection on my hands... in that time frame, I've managed to score (at retail):"

If someone has to escort you to the back to buy a Eagle Rare or MK10 then you are doing it wrong.

Curious what type of connection this is?

Family? Friend? Client? Business ties? Just a random shop owner you chatted up and hit it off with?

Either way, definitely a nice little hookup you have going on.

That seems to blur the line between "connection" and a-hole store owner.

I have no problem with owners hooking up there best/favorite customers, but if he puts bottles up for lottery (implying to his other customers that they might have a chance to win) and then let's you pick when you want to win the lottery, then that's kind of messed up. He's just flat out lying to other customers who don't really have a chance to win sheet.

Or am I misunderstanding the connection?

The lottery is just for a chance to walk into the room and pick a bottle. It's not a true lottery either. You're not gonna win if you buy 3x 24 oz beers a day to use as entry. Nor are you gonna win in back to back weeks generally. It's how they avoid box stuffing. It's not perfect, but I'd still guess any week based on traffic flow you'd have a 10-15% chance at winning.

They also allow certain people to just walk in the room and pick a bottle.

I became the latter.

Yes early on in the process I took one of the former spots I'd guess more than should be allowed.

Tough crowd.

I'll go back to lurking.

ETA: The ETL and WFP weren't lottery at all. Owner discretion.

Easier than hunting it in these parts. For me anyways. My couple locals are $60+ on the shelf for an ER.

Anyone have 2020 Birthday Bourbon?

I've had 2018 at a bar and was blown away.

It may be my favorite. When I was traveling for work I used to really, really look forward to my monthly trip to Denver. I stayed near a bar, bull & bush, that had it for like $8 a pour. Think it was up to $15 when I stopped traveling around 2018. Still worth a few pours a night on the company tab and crackers for dinner. Lol

I like the way you think.

I'm picking some up in a trade soon and can't wait to dive in.

I quit "hunting" a couple years ago because it got tiresome. Stopped in Rio Vista liquor store (south of Cleburne) yesterday afternoon to get my brother some of his favorite rum and glanced at their shelf and they had these two bottles. I might have gotten screwed on the price but I don't care. I had never seen it or heard of it so thought I'd give it a shot. Any folks out there had it yet?

The rye recipe tasted almost identical to the Blanton's and Hancock's Reserve that I tried it with

I did a side by side last night between those two. My unprofessional opinion is Blanton's is smoother and seemed to have a more mature age as the Kosher had a younger taste. Otherwise, I can't argue with them being the same mash bill from BT. I'll bet the age isn't the same and they are from different warehouses. It is worth the price I paid for sure.

Shocked they were still there today. Glad you scored, that's my favorite spot.

Anybody familiar with Blood Oath (pact 7)?

Had some while visiting family over the 4th and it was amazing. Sampled some ORVW 10 & 12 With it and was way more impressed with the blood oath. But I've never seen it and they said it's even harder to find.

That's great to know. I have a 6 & 7 that I haven't opened yet. Had the 6 before and liked it but I have never drank the 7.

I can finally say "they were just sitting there on the shelf." Hopefully in 5-6 years , this will be the norm.

I love blood oath too but the purists crap all over it because it's a blend of several bourbons. I have pact 4 and think it's incredible to sip on.

Taters in the Wild

I'm browsing the bourbon aisle of my local store (retail prices) and just kind of looking at new stuff and revisiting stuff I usually pass on. Ask employees opinion on things. "Carl" walks in to the store and the first thing out of his mouth was "you guys got any Blanton's in, how often do you get Blanton's in, okay so no Blanton's? Do you guys have EHT SmB in?".."do you guys have any "mishers" in right now?" The guy ended up walking out of the store with small batch but never even went to the bourbon aisle. "Carl" leaves and talked his friend "Tater" right in front of the store for 5 mins then right on cue, Tater walks in and says "so my buddy out there says you guys got some EHT SmB"

Most bourbon and rye are kosher. The whole BT kosher line is ridiculous imo.

I like bourbon but I've not had everything out there. Finishing up a bottle of ETL I was fortunate to score at retail, and I love it. I have one pour left now, will save for some later date. What would y'all recommend I pick up and try that may have a similar profile? Obviously it may not be as good or sought after as ETL, but I figured some of y'all may be able to point me in a direction.

Sounds like you enjoy 12 year 90 Proof bourbon.

Have you had Eagle Rare 10 year? They say ETL is like 12 year Blanton's, so I would maybe try getting a Blanton's and maybe a Blanton's Gold.

Blanton's is probably the most findable from mash bill2...

Otherwise maybe Buffalo Trace from mash bill 1 might be the next one to try.

You could give Ancient Age a try as well. It's young and a basic bourbon but if you don't like it you're not out $$$.

Blantons =\= ETL to me and it's not close.

Eagle Rare is a more similar flavor and mouthfeel.

But that's my palate.
