Saw an Elmer T. Lee, W12, JM Cigar, and WR Maderia in the wild today. All marked way up.

Just left a place that had a Stagg, Pappy 20, Van Winkle Fam Reserve, William larue Weller, and lots of others for sale. Only left with the mwnd cause I want to stay married

I finally did it. Passed on an EHT small batch for $60. I just think at that price, I could get better bottles…. and I did. I picked up a JDSBBP Rye at 134 proof for $59.99.

134 is one of the higher ones i have heard of. Nice pickup.

Batch 24D is pretty yummy

So I really liked the Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. I really like the rich taste of it. What are some similar bourbons.

How are the high proof barrel strength bourbons like the Stagg above? Are they not too hot from the high proof. Sorry I'm a newbie.

If you like Woodford Double Oaked, try Old Forester 1910. It's personally my favorite of the OF line. Really good and tons of flavor. For high proof stuff, it just depends. Some stuff like Bookers drink SUPER hot. Others you'd have no idea it's over 110 proof. For me, my daily is Wild Turkey 101 or Benchmark Bonded. Cheap, readily available, and really tasty for my palate. Also Stellum is, in my opinion, a bit of a steal right now. High proof but doesn't kick your butt. Made by Barrel Bourbon. Their standard offering should be about $38 and is really tasty. Knob Creek Reserve is 120 proof and about $50 and really good but let the ethanol burn off some. Very good and readily available. Different flavor profile but Ben Holladay Soft Red Wheat Rickhouse Proof is really good but about $75. Wheater, so different notes. All of those are things I would say are higher proof but drink nicely without being too harsh.

1910 is great. 1920 I would say is closer to a double oak and is also delicious

They can certainly drink too hot for your taste. If so, I'd suggest adding a couple drops of water and swirling. For a first foray into that world, you may try a larceny or Elijah Craig barrel proof. They have multiple releases a year & tend to be on the shelf a little bit. They're around $70 so not cheap but not going to break the bank.

In general, I know I like a lot of bottled in bond options with EHT small batch as a great semi-regularly available pour though I hate they've raised msrp & passed on it a few times of late. I don't blame BT for that & capitalizing on narrowing the secondary market as a whole.

Liking WRDO, I'd suggest looking at 1910 mentioned, but also 1920. Different profiles but both solid and readily available with solid oakiness.

ECBP is what I'd suggest too.

Funny. I just bought 1920 and WR Double Oak. Neither wowed me, but I've only had a pour of each. I'll have to try the 1910.

I love Parker's Heritage. Ph17 is the only one I own, but it's one of the best bottles I've ever had. How is that one?

It was the first bottle that got me into bourbon. It is the best of the PHC in my opinion. I bought several bottles about 10 years ago to hopefully never run out.

Wow. Thats a helluva way to get into the hobbie. I've tried the DBB, HCB, HCR, and 10yr rye recently and the 10 year rye has been my favorite. All of them are so good though.

Saturday haul - delivery from Seelbach's. Opened the Smokeye Hill. Quite nice.

I really enjoy the Smokeye Hill. It's like a baby version of Stagg but the Stagg cherry note is replaced with blueberry toaster strudel filling.

Nice! I really enjoyed the Fiddler! My parents picked up a bottle of the James E Pepper (It's a single barrel Rye though) for me when they were in Kentucky, still haven't tried it yet. Hopefully you enjoy your bottles!
