This thread inspired me to open up a 2012 120 Minute tonight. It definitely has more of a barleywine flavor profile but it's still almost like drinking maple syrup to me - just overwhelmingly sweet.

594 pages and some of you still haven't realized DFH 120 minute is terrible.

quote:How is that possible? I thought they didn't release FraGeeLay this year because of a shortage of barrels. In fact, I've heard this shortage goes for a number of breweries. Does this mean that Karbach has solved their shortage and we can look forward to more Barrel Aged greatness from them? I sure hope so. I love BBH, but I actually prefer Yule Shoot Your Eye Out to FraGeeLay.
Karbach to relase bbh as a new line and not part of the fun series anymore: first release on January 19th
quote:That's a good question. I would assume they get more than one use. And filling them right after emptying them makes sense as they would dry out other wise and no longer be usable to hold liquid, and getting them back to usable status would probably leach the whiskey from the staves and make them less effective.
How many times can breweries use the barrels? I know homebrewers get multiple uses out of them but you have to fill them back up as soon as you bottle.

Has anyone gone to RRBC for Pliny the Younger in the past couple of years? I tried to search the thread but couldn't find any solid info.
I was thinking about flying up there for a day near the middle of the two week window that it is on tap, but the articles I've found about it say it is anywhere from a 1-8 hour wait to get in. I could handle 1 hour, but I don't think I would be interested in much more than that. Looking for some tips from anyone who has gone in recent years. Is it really that long of a wait? When is the best time/day of week to go? Ideally I'd like to show up at 10am on a Saturday morning and get in when they open the doors at 11am. I think they let you buy 3 glasses of PtY, then I could have some food and do a tasting of all the other beers. I read that pre-2013 it was a lot worse, with them running out early due to allowing growler sales and a lack of limits.

Steve,
I've been to the Younger release the last 3 years. I'll actually be up in the area this year as well but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it over the mountain to enjoy the party. And yes, it really feels like a big party. Everyone there is ready to have a good time and you meet some interesting people (NorCal folks can be a bit strange!).
Here's the best way to go about it: go on a weekday (but not Friday), preferably on the second week. You will not be able to show up at 10:00am and expect to get in right at 11:00am. You may be able to show up at 9:00am and get in at 11:30am (it takes them time to check IDs and get people seated). We did that last year on the first Thursday and got the last table of the initial first wave. The 8 hours wait times are for weekends. As far as limits, I used to drink as much as I wanted but last year I just had one glass (that's all I allow myself at one sitting these daysplus a few samples off the taster). The stated limit is 3, I think. 2010 was the ****show when growlers were being filled. I wasn't there for that but in 2011 they said no more growlers and Younger would last all day and into the night, as they only tap a certain number of kegs per day. We would actually go in the morning for lunch, have a few beers, get wristbands, and then go hike before coming back that evening to get bombed. I'm not sure if they allow you to exit/re-enter anymore though.
So by all means, go up there and have a great time. Some pu$y a$ ****got once said "why go there when you can go to SF or SD to get it with less crowds?" and to people like him, I gently say "suck my Younger soaked balls"it's a great time up in Santa Rosa in early February and it's an all day party, everyday. Enjoy!

How is that Older Viscosity? I don't like any of Port's IPAs, but I do like some of Lost Abbey's barrel aged stuff.
