This thread inspired me to open up a 2012 120 Minute tonight. It definitely has more of a barleywine flavor profile but it's still almost like drinking maple syrup to me - just overwhelmingly sweet.

I still have one of the 2 bottles I purchased in 2012. Have passed on it every release since.

I am not a fan of it. And haven't bought any in a couple of years. It isn't terrible. But I also don't get the hype.

Same here. I bought two bottles in 2012 and drank the second one last night. I won't be purchasing it again.

The last 120 I had was on election night in 2012. I still have a few bottles. Maybe I'll crack one open to see if it has mellowed any.

Has anyone gone to RRBC for Pliny the Younger in the past couple of years? I tried to search the thread but couldn't find any solid info.

I was thinking about flying up there for a day near the middle of the two week window that it is on tap, but the articles I've found about it say it is anywhere from a 1-8 hour wait to get in. I could handle 1 hour, but I don't think I would be interested in much more than that. Looking for some tips from anyone who has gone in recent years. Is it really that long of a wait? When is the best time/day of week to go? Ideally I'd like to show up at 10am on a Saturday morning and get in when they open the doors at 11am. I think they let you buy 3 glasses of PtY, then I could have some food and do a tasting of all the other beers. I read that pre-2013 it was a lot worse, with them running out early due to allowing growler sales and a lack of limits.

How is that possible? I thought they didn't release FraGeeLay this year because of a shortage of barrels. In fact, I've heard this shortage goes for a number of breweries. Does this mean that Karbach has solved their shortage and we can look forward to more Barrel Aged greatness from them? I sure hope so. I love BBH, but I actually prefer Yule Shoot Your Eye Out to FraGeeLay.

I think the lack of barrel aged releases is more to do with the Karbach brewery expansion. The next FUN beer is in barrels and from what I was told by a Karbach sales rep, looking to be released in the next 6 weeks or so. IIRC, it is a rum barrel aged quad.

But Ags #1 is correct in that BBH is now going to be it's own seasonal release separate from the FUN series. And I also think that the keg that filled my growler of BBH is from the newest batch that will be officially released soon. But I could be wrong and it was just a keg that had not been sold to a bar yet from one of the previous releases. But from how it tastes, it seems fresher than aged BBH's that I've had in the past.

How many times can breweries use the barrels? I know homebrewers get multiple uses out of them but you have to fill them back up as soon as you bottle.

Also, I do not know what the current used whiskey barrel market looks like for breweries to get their hands on. So there may be a shortage of available barrels. But I was specifically told by a couple different Karbach guys at different times in the past couple of months that their lack of releases was due to the brewery expansion.

That's a good question. I would assume they get more than one use. And filling them right after emptying them makes sense as they would dry out other wise and no longer be usable to hold liquid, and getting them back to usable status would probably leach the whiskey from the staves and make them less effective.

Steve,

I've been to the Younger release the last 3 years. I'll actually be up in the area this year as well but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it over the mountain to enjoy the party. And yes, it really feels like a big party. Everyone there is ready to have a good time and you meet some interesting people (NorCal folks can be a bit strange!).

Here's the best way to go about it: go on a weekday (but not Friday), preferably on the second week. You will not be able to show up at 10:00am and expect to get in right at 11:00am. You may be able to show up at 9:00am and get in at 11:30am (it takes them time to check IDs and get people seated). We did that last year on the first Thursday and got the last table of the initial first wave. The 8 hours wait times are for weekends. As far as limits, I used to drink as much as I wanted but last year I just had one glass (that's all I allow myself at one sitting these daysplus a few samples off the taster). The stated limit is 3, I think. 2010 was the ****show when growlers were being filled. I wasn't there for that but in 2011 they said no more growlers and Younger would last all day and into the night, as they only tap a certain number of kegs per day. We would actually go in the morning for lunch, have a few beers, get wristbands, and then go hike before coming back that evening to get bombed. I'm not sure if they allow you to exit/re-enter anymore though.

So by all means, go up there and have a great time. Some ***** a$$ ****got once said "why go there when you can go to SF or SD to get it with less crowds?" and to people like him, I gently say "suck my Younger soaked balls"it's a great time up in Santa Rosa in early February and it's an all day party, everyday. Enjoy!

Thanks for the info BSD. Sounds like I need to try and take a couple days off work to get up there during the week.

Getting it in SD with less crowds is BS. The handful of places I saw advertising that they had it around SD last year all pretty much laughed in my face when I asked how I could get a pour. They were all doing private parties, raffles and other stuff that meant you had to spend all day there drinking non-RRBC beers in order to have a chance at one glass of PtE. No thanks. If I'm going to invest the time and effort to get PtE, I might as well go to the source.

I got in a line an hour early at toronado 2 years ago and wasn't even really that close. Folks came out about 15 mins after I got in line to let everyone know where the projected cut line was which was nice. They wind up being pretty damn accurate. I stayed and drank some other stuff

That's a solid get. I actually like the 10 more than the 12. If you like those, then the 15 is really where it's at. 20 and 23 are really good, but in my opinion, 15 is the sweet spot. The older ones have their own taste, but the 15 has the perfect amount of age to still be very crisp, without getting overly sweet or woody.

I should probably give Port another chance. I may have let my hatred for the Pizza Port experience cloud my judgement of their beers.

Don't start with me, Jock!

I did PtY at cheeky monk in Denver last year (maybe two years ago, can't remember.)
Got there ~20 minutes before serving time, I was #2 ticket. Sat at the bar with my uncle and got to do younger and elder side by side with some food. Within the second hour or so, bar was finally packed.
Glad I did so, because now I know I would never wait hours for that beer. It's such a hop bomb you really can't hardly distinguish it from others. I liked elder better.

Do it once at least, and maybe at RR brewpub could be worthy; but any old random bar, not worth the wait. Find a quieter release.

Any College Station drunks around Friday at 5:00pm or so? I have about an hour to kill and wouldn't mind cracking open a nice bottle. I actually arrive tomorrow night around 8:30pm but that might be too late for those that have to work the next day.
