Buying a new 36" dual fuel range - thoughts on GE Cafe or alternatives?

The 20 yo DCS 36" range that was in my house when I bought it is crapping out, and they no longer make the parts required to fix it. Looks like I'm going to have to take the big hit of replacing it. I never realized how expensive these things are

My leading contender is the GE Cafe 36" DF. Anyone own one that can give me a brief review?

Any other recommendations? I was looking at Bertazzoni until I read dozens of horrible reviews.

Oh, and I'm looking for a 6 burner with at least 2 18,000 BTU burners, along with convection.

Thanks!

Thanks for the response. Do you have any issues with the LCD panel on the top front staying dirty from grease splatters, etc.? The location of the panel is my only reservation with that one.

I have a kitchen full of GE Profile appliances (all but the refrigerator came with the house but we bought one to match the set) and will never buy another GE product again. Had the refrigerator replaced about 4-5 years ago with a Cafe model under warranty, after multiple attempts to fix. Have had motherboard, ice maker, and compressor repaired or replaced on the second one. Gas stove is ok when it finally lights, and the lowest setting still burns things like chili and spaghetti sauce if we don't stand there and stir often. Dishwasher is a POS and will be replaced soon. Had heating element replaced after recall for overheating issues. Fought tooth and nail for them to also replace racks after their faulty heating element melted the coatings. Finally agreed then sent me the wrong ones. Twice. Now the replacement grates are also rusting after the coating has started coming off again. Other than that, no issues.....

Sorry to hear that...especially since I bought the GE yesterday afternoon. Ah well, praying that I won't have the same issues.

GE is the builders standard, lasts about 10 years if all goes well. DCS is higher end and helps resale value. Good luck with that GE. We are replacing our 12 year old range this week.

Keep all receipts, register it ASAP, and take care of anything and everything before warranty runs out.

Wow, we remodeled our kitchen approx 2 years ago and selected all GE Profile appliances, mostly because of significant rebates from GE via HomeDepot. What a mistake. We've been unhappy with all of the GE appliances.

  • Refrigerator/Freezer: Ice maker occasionally decides to stop making ice; have to reset. Fridge doors have a "left open" alarm, but not the freezer drawer.
  • Microwave #1: Developed a "buzzing" sound just after 1-year warranty expired. Doesn't seem to cause a problem. When you use the 30-second button (one or more times), the program doesn't end. Instead, it prompts you to push a button for more time (6 seconds) or cancel....thereby causing the user to push another button.
  • Microwave #2: Caught on fire during warranty. Replaced by after GE repairman confirmed it was not due to user error (lol). Didn't use 2nd microwave much but recently (after 2nd warranty expired) its interior side panel has begun to melt/catch fire.
  • Dishwasher: Doesn't clean so well. Not sure of the problem. At least it's quiet.
  • Oven: Timer controls/usage are different between the oven and both microwaves. Moving oven racks is difficult (racks don't line-up with rack "shelves" on the sides of the oven).

I will never buy another GE product.

The GE brand is now owned by Haier, a company not exactly know for quality.

We sell all major brands and can confirm that the service incident rate on Kitchen Aid is lower than GE in our experience. If quality is your number one priority Wolf makes some of the best, but they are also very pricey.

Researching a similar project, from what I've found Thermador and Miele have the lowest repair rate.

I really wanted the Thermador and it's star-shaped burners, but wasn't about to drop $7,700 for it. I ended up finding last year's model of the GE Cafe (same Specs and very slight aesthetic changes) on closeout for $5,000 (the new Cafe typ runs ~$6,400) which still feels like crazy money to me. So far I'm happy with the Cafe...hopefully it holds up.

Are you saying a GE cafe cost $5k? Holy smokes. You can get a JennAir for under $2k.

I tried. It says call for price. I just made dinner on mine. 5 burner 36". Installed and cutting granite cost me less than half of that GE Cafe.

You posted a link to cooktops. Did you buy a cooktop or a range?

Doh!

Thought we we were talking tops. Not the oven + top = range.

We have a GE Cafe dual fuel range and love it. No idea on how long it will last, only had it about a year, but like it. Use the wifi remote start quite a bit on the oven.

Any new updates? We're all over the place and no showrooms to check things out here. May need to make a trip to Denver or Dallas just to see a few in person.
Anyone buy any appliances sight unseen off the internet?

Long time since my OP...
I ended up buying the GE Cafe...found a close out sale on the outgoing year (2018) on a floor model at a local appliance store that saved me quite a bit. My wife and I have been happy the range so far. The reversible grates (for woks) have been nice since we do a fair amount of stir fry. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

I just bought all Thermador appliances, sight unseen. I was told they should arrive in 4-6 weeks. I was going to buy Wolf and Sub-Zero, but Thermador's incentives were too good to pass up. I couldn't leave that much money on the table.

Just about to pull the trigger on all Thermdor or for our new build. Am shocked with the incentives. Any thoughts four months later on Thermador?

Would like to know the same.
