Now that we are sure the OP is alive and this project is being done... I think this is one of the best threads on the HI Board. Nice job OP et al.

The baseball team is winning, the softball team is winning, the basketball team made it to the tourney, the men's 4x4 relay set a world record and there is a home improvement thread with pics and an over/under. It's been a good week.

I'm on a phone so it's hard to tell, but is that really drywall in the shower?

If using a Kerdi liner/ membrane, like he mentioned doing, if it is installed properly, you can put it over any substrate. At trade shows, they have cardboard boxes lined with it filled with water.

I thought the Kerdi mentioned was for the floor and thinset but I hope I'm wrong. Those gaps would make me nervous too. Best of luck though.

I would rather have seen cement board on the walls.

I realize there are products for that but I just saw and interpreted the post to say it was for the floor

ONE WEEK + 1

So the subfloor is finally done and all the drywall is up. The first coat of mud got put on about 75% of the walls last night but unfortunately I got started too late in the evening to get it all done. This evening should be a lot better because I will be able to come straight home from work and get started.

To answer a couple questions I am seeing, the plan is to Kerdi the shower floor, the shower wall, and the bottom 8" of the bathtub surround. Ditra will be used for the main bathroom floor. As far as some of the large gaps in the drywall, as I mentioned earlier, the large gaps are all situated around crown mouldings, door casings, and wainscotting so they will be easily hidden. I have employed the same method in other parts of the house and everything has worked out. The wainscotting is solid hardboard base layer with 1/2" Medex MDF on top of that so it is the same as putting up wood paneling. As long as you have a mostly flat surface, little gaps in the wall wont be noticable.

One week +2 hopefully schedule. Finish mudding, install Ditra, install Kerdi, and if there is still time, sand the mud and apply wall texture.

These gaps

turned into this

so I am not worried in the least.

The gap at the top is no different than the gaps cabinet installers leave for crown molding. The only reason you have drywall behind anything that mounts to the wall is so you have a solid even surface to rest paneling or cabinets against. If nothing is going to be resting on it, than there is no need to have it and no need for the extra work to put it in.

I can promise my husband has never left a gap in any drywall EVER.

I get your point, but ADHD folks can't do that.

While we're waiting on OP to get his act together, I'll just note that my bathroom renovation took way less time. And that mirror is being replaced. I hate it.

Gaps in drywall lead to more air infiltration between areas and are another avenue bugs can take to get in. I recommend sealing them up whenever possible.

ONE WEEK + 2

Decent progress last night but I would like to know why it is not possible to go get more drywall compound at 1 in the morning. These places need to be more accommodating to the working man's schedule.

First coat of tape and mud done

Ditra laid out and installed

Back wall, shower floor, and part of the knee wall waterproofed

One Week + 3 Schedule
Finish waterproofing the shower, sand first coat of mud, install final coat of mud, final sanding, layout tile, and if I am really ambitious and dont care about sleep, install the floor tile

Sleep is important; and I'm not saying this because I'm hedging for 14.5 days. You don't want to have to rip up the tile because you were too tired to notice a mistake.
One thing to be ambitious, but you do have a family that needs a healthy dad/husband.

Looks good so far, keep on trucking!

I'll echo this. Only you know your abilities and what you're able to handle, but I always knew I was done for the day when I would make some really stupid mistake on the tile saw. After a couple of times trying to soldier on through the fatigue, I learned my lesson. Now, whenever I have the "What the *%(# are you doing dumbass!" moment, I know it's time to hit a stopping point and start cleanup.

When I am watching my husband make the same cut for the 4th time I have to stop him; he seldom stops himself.

Men can be quite stubborn about working past the point of exhaustion.

This. The same reason you tape joints that aren't going to be seen. You build the box, you seal the box, and then you decorate the box. As air moves, so does moisture. I'm not doubting that the finished product won't look nice, it's just not the right way to build.

I understand what you all are saying and I agree but understand that I am not interested in fixing every little "non-structural" issue with this house given the age of it. None of the windows have insulation or foam around them, same goes for all the doors. The crawl space is open to the elements but there is no vapor barrier or insulation between it and the conditioned space. There is no vapor barrier in the attic seperating the insulation from the drywall. This house "breathes" a lot. Trust me, if I could make the whole house air tight I would but it is a much bigger problem than just not finishing some drywall joints. Joints that will become airtight anyways between caulking of the moldings and liquid nail for paneling.

I do like those cabinet knobs in your photo. Nice and clean looking. We have some 90's porcelain ones that need to be changed out. Unfortunately our faucets are shiny silver and those look buffed. Is it bad to mix them? I have zero design skills and I mean zero.

ONE WEEK + 3

Shower is waterproofed. One little piece needed on the knee wall. That will get done this evening when I complete the tub surround.

Got all the mud on and gave it a final sanding. Also finished installing all the switches and put the LED lights in.

Started to lay out the tile.

Input from you all on the tile. I was planing on centering the tile with the toilet since in sits in the middle of this opening, but that will require both wall pieces of tile in the main bath to have to be cut. Should I just not worry about centering the tile with the toilet and start a full piece of tile against the tub and just work my way across?

One Week + 4
Today should be rather easy. Just need a couple more pieces of waterproofing than I will move on to installing the floor tile. The lady of the house will also be by tonight to help clean so she and the 7 month old can move back into the house this weekend. With any luck, I will finally be asleep before 11 (let alone 2 AM). The floor tile is a big step because once it is in, I can get started on installing the cabinets and installing all the trim pieces.

My 2 cents is center the tile. You don't want a sliver on one side.

dumb question - but those two light switches seem awful close to the shower. is that allowed?
