So many LIV fans justified their position by claiming the way the Tour treated people was unconscionable. But they're all strangely quiet now that LIV has abandoned their players, vendors and fans and screwed them out of millions, if not billions. Would have thought those freedom fighters would be out there fighting the good fight for these guys getting stiffed. Yet not a word. Weird.

Competition is good. It helped the PGA tour. They're getting rid of a bunch of the mid players this next year. Hopefully their stars will play in more tournaments going forward.

The easy thing to do is make all LIV golfers who wish to rejoin the PGA Tour to play on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2027 season and earn their way back to the PGA Tour Championship Series starting in 2028. Most of the LIV golfers are past their prime or not top 50 PGA Tour type players currently.

They took massive bonus payments to go try to start a rival tour with many of the players suing the PGA tour on the way out. A little fine feels more than justified.

We have different definitions of "competition" but whatever.

Not exactly sure why you think giving all these guys generational wealth on a scale never seen before is gonna make them wanna play more golf. Seems pretty obvious to me that once all these guys have truly FU money, they'll pretty much just do whatever they want. The reason Jack played every week was because he had to. Now maybe he deserved to make more and it's a good thing these guys are paid more now. I don't necessarily disagree. But I don't get why anyone thinks the end result of all of this is these guys agreeing to do more things they don't want to.

I think Hatton is going to have to go to the DP Tour for a year. Rahm going to straight to the PGA Tour is one thing, Hatton is a whole other issue...

Cam Smith going to be an interesting one to follow, he was a part of the returnee program at the first of this year but $25 mill is a LOT of coin.

Usfl guys took big payments and the usfl sued the nfl. When the usfl folded, the usfl guys were welcomed with open arms. No fines.

I think the chance of the being relegated is the only thing to keep them competing. More stick and less carrot. Now with LIV gone it should be easier to do. The tour just can't give exemptions to guys like Spieth or let Rory not play the full amount of tournaments required.

As best I can recall, that comparison does not work. The majority of the big names that went to the USFL were straight out of college and had not signed NFL contracts. Conversely, most of the big names that left the PGA TOUR were in breach of their tour agreement they had signed. Hence, grounds to fine them while the NFL had no grounds.

And then there's the fact that the tour is member run and the members likely want their pound of flesh from the guys that left. The NFL did not have that problem.

That doesn't mean that's the right course of action.

Also, I don't know the background, but I'm going to guess the USFL had no where close to the impact on the NFL that LIV did to the PGA.

Do you work for the PGA tour or something? Why do you care so much that a golfer took half a billion dollars to play golf for someone else?

.

It's my 2nd favorite sport behind Aggie football. So I don't particularly like efforts to destroy it anymore than I would like efforts to destroy college football. A sports-based message board seems the place to discuss that. YMMV and you can always ignore me.

Ryder Cup style tournament. PGA guys vs LIV guys that want to come back.

LIV wins, they're better than the PGA guys, so they're on the Tour.

PGA wins, LIV guys go to Korn Ferry and earn it.

Yeah I'm sure Harold Varner, Abe Anser and Elvis Smylie as the 10/11/12 seeds versus Gotterup, Morikawa and Xander will make for really compelling matches...

Seems like Cam Smith is willing to go down with the ship - pledged to stay with LIV 2.0 where he can play 3 days of giggle golf and still cash paychecks. He signed with LIV for $140 million and has earned approx $49 million in tournament winnings. $25 million would hurt but doable, but not sure he has the interest in returning to PGA competition (where he might have to actually go to the driving range every once in a while.)

I'm not sure how successful most of LIV golfers would be on Korn Ferry - many (Westwood, Poulter, Watson) now in their late 40's and 50's and more skilled golfers now populate the KF tour. The guys whose games were already declining when they took the money (Na, Varner, Sergio, Matt Wolff) might need to find other options or tours.

LIV's "mystery" lead investor spoke to players Tuesday night. That would be Ted Goldthorpe of BC Partners, a private equity firm based in London that has ties to GSE Worldwidethe agency that represents a sizable portion of LIV's roster. It was never truly a mystery, despite LIV not announcing the name. Goldthorpe was at LIV Bedminster earlier this month and the GSE connection made this a known thing throughout the industry. What is not known is if BC Partners' investment is actually a loan, if its contingent on other investors joining and/or certain LIV players returning.

Well crap, that's it for Legion XIII....

The above X post is really telling

Quote:

Will players commit to LIV Golf 2.0?

LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil met with the media yesterday in Indianapolis to give an update on the future of the league.

It came under a backdrop of the investor who's spent more than $5 billion set to walk away, huge numbers of unpaid vendors and contractors, staff given notice, multiple million dollar lawsuits, the feeder system disappearing, question marks over star players commitment, a smoke and mirrors campaign around the non-playing of the Team Championship in Michigan, and the looming threat of bankruptcy.

That didn't stop Scott trying to convince the media and fans that LIV Golf 2.0 is full steam ahead, even if actual details were once again absent. In reality though, it doesn't matter what anyone thinks or says, it only matters what the players do.

LIV Golf 2.0 will likely fail before a transaction is completed without player support. This is a difficult task when the league is expected to file for bankruptcy in the coming weeks, leaving these same players as the largest creditors, which could lead to high profile lawsuits.

It becomes even harder when players have to be convinced to take equity in a new entity after they've just witnessed contractors and vendors they've built personal relationships with left unpaid for months of hard work, likely adding to the lawsuit mountain.

All of this is before even looking at the challenges in convincing players to stay for the actual golf.

CEO Scott O'Neil said in his press conference that "guardians and stewards of the game of golf" have an "appetite to put the parochial friction of the past behind us." He also mentioned multiple times that he wanted LIV Golf to "complete, not compete". Unfortunately for Scott, LIV Golf is now "completely" isolated in the professional golf landscape and without the support of the sovereign wealth fund investing billions of dollars there's no way it can realistically "compete" even if it wanted to.

The PGA Tour in partnership with the DP World Tour has moved to sign multi year deals to strengthen the national opens Scott was originally pitching in LIV Golf 2.0. They also formed a partnership with the Asian Tour to close the feeder system LIV Golf invested $300 million into just 5 years ago. There are also significant doubts over whether the league can maintain OWGR approval and the major access they worked so hard to obtain.

Add to that the uncertainty of whether LIV Golf players will face reinstated fines and suspensions from the DP World Tour, the still active year long suspension from PGA Tour events, and the loss of The International Series on the Asian Tour. It's very difficult to see how players will be able to build their schedules out from the proposed 10 events in LIV Golf 2.0 to fill their seasons.

For many, this is just too big of a risk to take with the future of their careers. Several weeks ago, I reported 7 players had told me directly they were going to leave, and that number has grown significantly. In the words of one player, who will remain anonymous due to the nature of the situation:

"I grew up making putts on the practice green to win Ryder Cups and majors. There was always a hope I could still do it on LIV if I played well enough. Now, that hope is gone."

There is no argument to be made against the PGA Tour being the most competitive tour in the world, and it will be for many years to come under the new Championship and Challenger Series launching in 2028. If LIV Golf players wish to test themselves at the very top of the sport, the only way they can do that now is to begin serving their PGA Tour suspensions once LIV Golf Indianapolis concludes, which many have indicated to me they intend to do.

Scott O'Neil said during his opening monologue in yesterday's press conference, "We're not asking anyone to choose between LIV Golf and the rest of the game." But for the star players and those who wish to be competitive, there really is no real choice anyway.

The referenced tantrum. Technically didn't break a tee marker, but he did gouge the F out of the #2 teebox then broke his driver (or finished breaking it) on a green cooler box.

When you have Sergio & Mickletits representing your league, it does not give sponsors the warm and fuzzies having to justify and explain people throwing tantrums on the teebox at Augusta or sharing dick picks with other golfers wives at dinner or sexually assaulting club staff

Assuming he gets paid for it, that's a pretty awesome showing for La Sasso. Gets the final win over Rahm and he never joined the PGAT so no penalties to pay when it all consolidates.

So does Feherty land back at CBS or NBC, or does he get smothered with the retirement pillow like Faldo did? "I'm ready. I'm ready." "Go to your happy place." Except instead of Nantz holding the pillow, it's Yasir Al-Rumayyan.
