Just registered for womens tickets this year. I've about given up on Masters so I figured this is the next best option.
I went this year. It is great. Not like the energy of The Masters but as far as seeing the course goes I think it's better. Not nearly as many people. There were times I felt like I had the place to myself.
Is the pro shop open during the women's event?
Yes. The main pro shop is open and there are some small merch stands around the grounds. The second big pro shop is not open.
Line to get into the shop was about 30-40 minutes. I never saw a time of day where it looked like the crowd was thinner. They'd let people into the shop in batches, and inside the place was a total zoo. I don't particularly LIKE crowds, but I don't get crowd anxiety like some people. Even so, I eventually I stopped shopping and GTFO because I couldn't stand it. Had someone pulled a fire alarm there would've been tramplings.
Everything else about the ANWA was total first class as expected. You could tell they use it as a training ground. A lot of folks working concessions were getting taught, but it didn't slow anything down. The merch shop was the only part of the day that was less than awesome (besides the rain delay). And it was crowded, but it's not like people were rude or angry or causing problems. Still, if I get ANWA tickets again I think I'd skip it unless it looked like things were different.
I don't have anything to compare it to. My only other trip to Augusta was for Sunday 2011. Pro shop was nothing like that back then, but it was before the ticket lottery for competition rounds. A different era since such a big percentage of attendees were regulars instead of tourists getting their only shot.
