Tangent but I'm kind of surprised that in this market providers are pushing towards long term contracts.

I guess their thought is prices aren't going higher, and if they drop maybe people will forget and keep paying these rates or, at worst, pay a termination fee.

But pretty large risk if prices just keep going up and people are locked in at 3 year old rates.

In my industry, we're seeing the opposite. Literally none of my suppliers are doing long term contracts, every one of them are pushing short term deals. Not completely apples to apples but still interesting to me.

Retailers can hedge load out in the future so the $s at risk is just some shape. If the retailer has their own generation then the retailer can effectively lock in a higher heat rate almost guaranteeing profit. Your typical residential contract has $15-30 of margin in it.

Anyone use a prepaid plan? I just changed to one because it had a lower rate, but was curious about the experience. Seems basically like the toll tag system but for electricity, which I'm ok with.

Certainly seems like EOs model is completely broken. Leaving someone on 24c to just wait this out when the world energy market is approaching catastrophe in several developed countries?

Bold strategy, Cotton.

Bump. I'm up for renewal in March. Anybody recently started a new electric plan? What are we looking at?

Same here I'm shopping, seeing ~14c right now. Been on a 3 year deal that's about to let up, so this one's gonna hurt a bit.

FYI... I can't remember if it's 90 or 120 days out from contact expiration that you can lock in.

I'm in the same boat.

My question, with natural gas back to about $4, what is the timing and correlation to electricity rates. In other words, natural gas is about $4.10 right now (it was over $9 in Sumner when rates shot up).. if it stays there or goes lower, how long does it need to be there, and when will rates reset? My understanding is these electric providers hedge rates in line with contracts.

When Freeport gets back online US NG use will increase by 2BCF/Day. Currently expecting late January for that now.

I know it has another run in process in the back half of the year, but it was in the $9 area before that export terminal went offline.

So natural gas is now below $3. Near record low levels of the past 20 years which offered electricity rates down in the upper single digits. Still not sure exactly how correlated the timing and pricing is in today's market between had and electricity, but pricing is definitely drifting lower with rates currently around 12 cents.

For those who signed those high teens contracts in the summer, probably a good time to consider taking that penalty and getting a reset... Not to mention, you never want to be up for renewal in the summer months.

FYI, just called the Ogre and they told they are seeing rates ~ mid $0.12, but fluctuate a little each day. I also called my current energy provider and all of their fixed rate plans are ~$0.14. I'm currently ~ $0.12

Thigbe put me on a .05 short term plan Monday. I dropped EO and paid cancellation fee on my .12 plan. Too good to pass up. Hopefully doesnt bite me in the rear in May renewal

There are some decent plans available today but they are all short term at 4 months or less.

My spreadsheet average month back in 2021 last time I looked was $110 for a 2 year plan at $.085

Cheapest 12 month plan would run at $145.59 from PowerNext. Never heard of them at $0.12

I have had power next for the previous 2 years (each 12 month deals ) and had no complaints.

They delivered the power and charged my credit card each month as expected

I was just renewed with another company called juice energy, so I am in the same situation, starting with a new company etc

Damn - this was just one month ago, and already seeing 36 month rates @ 11.X About to lock one of these in.

I'm seeing a lot of 10.6c 36mo plans today. I'm on a 12.8 36mo with $150 canx fee right now. Tempted...

I just signed up for a new plan a few days ago at a higher price. However after looking at my deal and what is available now, it appears that the centerpoint delivery costs have gone down from 4.9 to 3.5 cent per kWh.

Does this make sense? Do transmission rates change at the beginning of March?

I think I should be ok and get the new lower rate since it says that my price can change if the centerpoint rates change

Those 3 year plans are currently the best deal vs a super short term.

Hopefully, the trend keeps up, I have to renew in May.

Just signed up with Thigbe (Aggie owned and you can select a charity to donate to).

11.1 cents for 36 months for 1000kwh

Beat my Energy Ogre offer for 12 months @ 12.6 cents for 1000kwh

Also, they answer the phones and the lady was very nice to work with if you have any questions about cost comparisons. You'll want to specify that you want a 36 month contract.

Just came up on my calendar that it was time to shop as my 24 month contract is ending in May.

Are we thinking a 36 month plan is the way to go? The 24mo and 36 month are essentially the same rate it looks like.

My contract expires 4/2024, currently at 9 cents/kwh (power price and transmission) and would consider giving up that last year to extend for 3 years at the 11.7 cents kwh. Going to look at the numbers, probably won't.

Oil and Gas looks to be at a seasonal low and will continue to increase this year into next. I think now would not be a bad time to lock in a long term contract at a fair price. Global demand looks to be rebounding and is not foretasted to decline.

Also, one thing I have noticed about electricity plans is that an annual contract is typically cheaper during low demand months such as March/April or October/November. It really shouldn't be that way since you are buying an annual fixed price but it typically is.

Anytime you try to renew even an annual contract in the peak months they are typically higher.

Rates are coming down....even the Thigbe 36 month that i was quoted is now "dated"...makes me realize that just doing it on own mght be the best way...i have been with Ogre for 5+ years....they have kept me on this crummy 12 month plan with energy charge (before delivery even) of 0.126000...not sure how they have not assessed me in the past 2 months to be able to save significantly....going to this PowerNext 36 month plan will save me nearly $300 per month in peak summer months...

I am with PowerNext right now and they are fine...the price above says "new customers" but will see if they will give me that rate...

You need to include all the transmission fees when you compare. Ogre does that but I don't think power to choose does. So the Ogre price is closer than you think.

I had Thigbe include all fees in their comparison and went with them.

I paid an early cancellation a few years back to get our renewal point in the early spring for this exact reason.

Yeah with rates diving into 10-11.X I'm about to lock up 36 months and call it a day. Delivery only going to get more expensive as infra build investment gets going IMO.

I'm up for renewal in early May. Average monthly usage over the last 2 years is 1561 kWh.

I am seeing rates in the low 10s for 12 to 24 months on Texas Power Guide.

Should I renew now or wait to see if things continue to move downward with natural gas prices?

Energy ogre signed me up for a plan at 11.1 cents. Lower than this past year.

In May, I would do a 12 month plan and see how the markets goes after that.

I see prices coming down, but that's just my opinion.

Have a decent one locked in until end of August, but with a $250 termination fee. Still considering terminating and locking in a 3 year.

Yeah I locked in last week on a 12-mo with PowerNext for 10.7 via PowerToChoose.

Remember, it's almost always better to lock in during the winter/early spring.

My Think Energy contract is up in June.

I'm currently paying 12.1 cents just for electricity, not including fees. The all-in price is averaging 18 cents. That was the best I could do last November.

They are offering me 9.07 cents per kWh, not including fees. I'm usually under 1000 kWh per month, so that averages out to somewhere between 13.1 and 13.5 all in.

I think I'm going to take it. I've been with Think before (previously left because they offered me a crappy renewal). I like them because they do not charge different rates based on usage and there are no minimum use fees. So, even if my base kWh rate is a little higher, that and delivery charges are ALL I'm paying for. And I'm not penalized for low usage.

24 months is 8.82 and 36 is 8.71.

silly question, how do you go about orchestrating the change. Does your current provider get automatically notified or am I going to have to be on the phone with the old one as well?

About 10 months ago I went thru Evergreen($20 per month) and they signed me up on a 60 month at .087. After reading about Thigbe, I sent them a bill comparison and they sent back my savings. This was a low month for me on usage however(just under 1k) and with a pool in the summer I am right at 2k usage. The Thigbe between 1k-2k is .107 and add on the .004 fee. I think I would be saving moving to Thigbe but is it worth giving up that 5yr rate?
