don't most brokerages offer fractional shares now?krosch11 said:
There is one candy bar that everyone wants. Its an amazing candy bar. The best candy bar in the world. The problem is their allowance doesnt cover the cost to buy the one candy bar. So one day, someone really smart said, "lets break that candy bar into pieces. and sell the smaller pieces so everyone has chance to buy some. Suddenly all these kids can afford to buy some of that candy bar. And because so many people want the candy and there isnt that many pieces, people are willing to pay more to get some before its gone.
Thats my best effort. I have two little ones so let me know how effective it is. Might need to tailor it better when my time comes.

Back in the Dot Com days, getting to a point where you could split was showing the world that you'd "made it".Diggity said:
probably not the best explanation for a kid that already bought a fractional share.
the real explanation: "people are ****ing stupid"

So my 9 year old put $50 of his own money in AMZN a couple months ago. I want to use this as an opportunity to teach him about a stock split and why the price of stock goes up. You guys smarter than me have a good way to explain it to a 9 year old?

Folks wouldn't touch a stock that hadn't split (at all, or lately).
For a Portfolio Manager who wants to own a 2% position in Amazon across all accounts, he had a hard time doing it with an account much under ~$150k. Now he can use AMZN across many more of his accounts...In essence the market for it is bigger, so more liquidity.
Now, should that drive prices up? No, but there are a lot of university educated people who wouldn't buy Anadarko simply because it was a $50 stock while Exxon was $80 and Chevron was $100.

"Son, this is an opportunity to teach you a valuable lesson. You have 1 share of Amazon stock at $3000. They are going to make the price $150, but give you 19 more shares. And that's going to make more people want to buy the stock, so the price will go up."
"But Dad, 1x3000 and 20x150 are both $3000. Why would people be fooled by this?"
"Well that's the lesson, son. It's because people are stupid."
