my avg is 3.11 and im happy with that letting it ride for a long time if need be. I have quite a bit of shares that have been easy covered calls to scalp with these spikes, so it might be slightly lower than that now. I havent factored that in.

Incredible. Can't wait to start building a position. Just remember GOOGL gapped +250 or so and was eventually brought back under and has been held there. Will likely get a better opportunity to buy

So my 9 year old put $50 of his own money in AMZN a couple months ago. I want to use this as an opportunity to teach him about a stock split and why the price of stock goes up. You guys smarter than me have a good way to explain it to a 9 year old?

There is one candy bar that everyone wants. Its an amazing candy bar. The best candy bar in the world. The problem is their allowance doesnt cover the cost to buy the one candy bar. So one day, someone really smart said, "lets break that candy bar into pieces. and sell the smaller pieces so everyone has chance to buy some. Suddenly all these kids can afford to buy some of that candy bar. And because so many people want the candy and there isnt that many pieces, people are willing to pay more to get some before its gone.

Thats my best effort. I have two little ones so let me know how effective it is. Might need to tailor it better when my time comes.

Yes, I think the biggest driver is it's perceived as "more affordable" to the average trader?

Back in the Dot Com days, getting to a point where you could split was showing the world that you'd "made it".

Folks wouldn't touch a stock that hadn't split (at all, or lately).

For a Portfolio Manager who wants to own a 2% position in Amazon across all accounts, he had a hard time doing it with an account much under ~$150k. Now he can use AMZN across many more of his accounts...In essence the market for it is bigger, so more liquidity.

Now, should that drive prices up? No, but there are a lot of university educated people who wouldn't buy Anadarko simply because it was a $50 stock while Exxon was $80 and Chevron was $100.

ETA for Irish...Not that Anadarko was a good buy for Oxy, but it didn't get attention from many retail investors simply because of its price (rather than it's value).

"Son, this is an opportunity to teach you a valuable lesson. You have 1 share of Amazon stock at $3000. They are going to make the price $150, but give you 19 more shares. And that's going to make more people want to buy the stock, so the price will go up."

"But Dad, 1x3000 and 20x150 are both $3000. Why would people be fooled by this?"

"Well that's the lesson, son. It's because people are stupid."

Not to derail the comedy here (which is true).

I thought I read that the stock price 'after' a stock split normally sees the stock drop initially so maybe a good time to buy after it splits.

I bought GOOG after the split announced and I paper handed that B right into a 12% loss.

Remember…..NASDAQ is bordering bear market territory. Let these stocks figure out where they wanna fall. GOOG popped up for a day and within a week all gains were given back.

AMZN will be around once this market stabilizes.

Signed,
GOOG paper-handed *****

Pt 2. If he had 5 shares at $3000/share he can sell a covered call with 100 shares at 150/share
