After a few days they switch over to margin account even though you bought the underlying from your cash account.

Well I don't think you are technically trading with margin. It's just they move the underlying stock or options to that account. When you put in the order change the "Type" to margin if it's defaulted to cash. Don't you have to have a margin account to trade options?

I ran into this issue last week. Applied for level 4 option trading and it solved the issue. Was approved in minutes.

Irish - I book most of my trades as "margin", but fidelity will only use margin if you don't have available cash to cover it.

The only time I have problems is the rare instance I will sell a naked straddle or a naked call, and the margin requirements for that can be very high. I did it on gamestop for example.

Guess fidelity requires margin for the L4. I might consider it later, but not right now. Following my rules is what has kept me in the game this long and I only like to trade money that is my own to prevent me from oversizing

I used margin but only traded my cash available. It just helped with faster settlements for my small account.
