On a separate note, what are your thoughts on the industry's stock buybacks? I don't necessarily see how stock buybacks are beneficial to employees that don't hold a lot of their company's stock. But if the company has a good balance sheet and low debt, why inflate the stock price? It does seem to mainly benefit wall street and executives who own and get paid through stock.

On stock buybacks, I've honestly not given them much thought. I own very few individual stocks, so it hasn't been all that relevant to me. That type of thing gets lost in the noise of owning mutual funds and ETF's.

I frankly don't get all the outrage over them though. I would assume the disdain over it is that folks are arguing that the company in question is manipulating their own stock. However, if I own that stock and the price goes up and then sell for a profit then I'm not sure I care if they do it or not.

You could also argue that the company in question has also decided that investing back into the company is a better return than deploying that cash another way.

My opinion on the outrage is that companies were borrowing money to buy back stock. I'm sure a lot of oil companies are in a bind specifically for that reason as are airlines apparently...
