Random question - I am going to throw a very small amount of money at three companies ($100 each) that are in dire straights right now. Most likely those companies aren't going to make it and this money is down the tubes. If they do make it though - enormous upside. I'm just kind of doing this as an experiment and would like to do companies that are still traded on either Nasdaq or the NYSE. What would you pick?
Callon Petroleum (CPE) and Tellurian (TELL) would be my recommendations. Both stocks have gotten hammered, but some potential upside if prices/industry rebound.

Finally taking the plunge and am going to start investing in the stock market. Is Robinhood a decent platform to get your feet wet with?
No. Use TD Ameritrade.

Not if you intend to be an active trader. If you plan to be a passive investor, it's fine

Robinhood will be out of business in a year, imo

I just want to invest a little and learn. Not gonna jump in buying thousands of dollars worth of stocks when I don't really know the game at all.
i bailed on robinhood a few weeks ago after their platform went down for 2 volatile days, ultimately costing me serious $$. HARD PASS.

Looking at TD Ameritrade, would you suggest a standard account for a beginner. I've got retirement and educational accounts with other institutions but not a brokerage account.

NKE reported Q3 (Dec/Jan/Feb) earnings after hours.

Weathered China shut down better than expected. Up 15% today and up another 11% after hours.

FAT SEXY and AW 1880... there is a thread started "Day Trading Requirements" Go take a look at it and it will give you some basics I just added. I just went through all of this last week.

It is important to understand this before just "jumping in like I did." I made a quick $2k and thought I was hot shiz and lost it all and some and had my TD account frozen today because I did not follow the rules. I missed out on today because of it.

All rookie mistakes that easily could have been avoided...

Anyone care to share their Think or Swim workspace?

I need to take the time to fully set mine up how I want it and change hot keys etc; but would be nice if someone has done a lot of the legwork to share theirs and modify from there.

We don't really have a home computer but should do I can use TOS desktop platform.

Edit: I like the idea though. Think it would be really great expansion of the conversation.

Like I said a several pages ago this is going to be such a spectacular battle.

Fed and treasury pumping unlimited trillions against upcoming massive cash crunch.

I don't think people quite understand that the system cannon withstand consumption hiatus. It takes the financial system to the brink. That's why they're injecting amounts that dwarf the financial crisis.

Fed balance sheet is going to end up nearly equal to GDP.

Today I recovered close to 1/4 of my losses since this thing hit. Had a really nice day.

That said, I don't think we are at the bottom yet. A lot of what I have is still overall red, therefore if I sold today and bought back later, it would get me in a wash sale situation. So I am thinking I don't touch any of that, just average in on dips. However, for anything where I am green, would you sell and look in the profit and buy back later?

I am in the green on:
AAPL
AMZN
CADE
DIS
FIT
GOOG
IAU
ROKU
TDOC
ZM

That would be locking in around $16k in profits if I sold the above. All of these but CADE and FIT are ultimately long term holds for me. I would be looking to buy them back assuming things drop again.

any thoughts? And by the way.., just looking for thoughts, I will ultimately be the one making the decision and living with the consequences, but getting different POVs is helpful for me.

Thank you in advance.
In my opinion the market doesn't care whether you're at a profit or at a loss. The value is what the market value is whether you bought in at $1/sh or $1,000/sh. Who does care is the IRS and they would love for you to realize those $16K worth of profits.

If you're not worried about the tax consequences, then selling high if you think it will drop significantly lower would be good.

But you can do the same with those holdings with the losses. If you think the value is going to drop then the same strategy of selling now and buying lower applies. If you wait 30 days it's a win-win, you made out on extra money and get to offset other gains with those realized losses... if its a wash sale then you don't get to do that but you just bought the stock back lower and you didn't lose anything.

This is all contingent on the belief these stocks will be cheaper in the future.

Good luck! And congrats on those with gains!

I trade a decent amount and a TON lately (like 7-10 per day) - I only use mobile app to execute trades. Looking to start using my ToS platform though.

I work from home and won't be doing too much work at all for the next 3-4 months.

FYI day after >8% move. 4/5 gapped down. 5/5 closed down from open. Intraday should swing up then melt tomorrow.

One day was 10/29/08 where fed dropped bearish sentiment that spiked the close from +5% to -1% in minutes, so it's not entirely out of the question to have an up day, but unlikely
