Was at the TAMU SPE career enhancement event today. Met a lot of very bright young people. Also saw a 2 hour long line for Matador because they were the only independent operator hiring new grads full time. Saw some really talented and great kids in that line. It's not a fun time to be graduating.

No doubt there's very many qualified and bright students. There's also a whole lot of experienced guys and girls out there looking for work. Open positions are being flooded with resumes right now.

yeah the COP layoffs have been announced for some time, everyone's just waiting for the doomsday ax to finally swing next week. Managers/Supervisors got marching orders & cut lists yesterday for their respective departments & lower level employees, although they themselves dont know if they are on chopping block until the dirty work is done.
Oh that sucks... do the dirty work for them and then get let go? I'd be pissed.
happens all the time. Back in the '86 rounds I knew a manager that had to spend an entire day laying off almost 30 guys, brutal day for all ..only to have his boss walk in at 6PM and lay him off.
Unbelievably chicken s$it.. Really no excuse to put someone thru this. But then ..nobody cares...

I guess it just depends. I wouldn't want someone else to lay my guys off for me regardless if I'm also getting led out after the fact. Wouldn't be right. They deserve better than that.

It sucks either way for the manager so you might as well do the right thing.

I think they should tell the manager up front. As a manager, I agree with you and wouldn't want someone else laying off my people.

Tell the manager at the beginning of the day that they are gone, take their laptops/logins/whatever they have to do, but give them the opportunity to sit in on the discussions with their team.

I got laid off last year. They told me I could take my time, even work out the week if I wanted. Said they knew it was a risk to them, but believed in treating their people with respect. This was a large corporation, not a small biz.

I went back to my office, shut the door, called my wife, packed up my own office, organized my work and transferred it all to the shared drive, and sent the group a farewell email.

I understand the "reasoning" behind doing it so inhumanely with security and such, but I still don't think it is justified.

In before some HR dork shows up to tell us how important it is to treat laid off employees like felons being released from prison and to wear a safety harness and hard hat to walk down stairs.

Any safety related positions are going to be hard to come by right now. Some of the safety service companies might be hiring but they won't be management positions.

Total exercises option to buy CHK out of the Barnett

Interesting choice by Total. They ought to be familiar with all of the issues that come with drilling the Barnett these days.

They committed $2.2 B for 25% years ago and now have the opportunity to get the remaining 75% for $400MM+. On a net % basis, they are paying less than 10% of what they paid for the 25%. Why wouldn't you exercise that option? That being said, i know way too much about this deal so I'll shut up.

In a move that has been expected for months, FCX has sold the PXP deepwater platforms to Anadarko. Closing date will be Q4 2016. I expect that layoffs will come soon and the Houston offices will be gone.

Layoff's have been on-going. They've already had a couple of rounds this year with the most recent being a few weeks ago. Office will most likely stay around until Q1 '17. Who knows after that. They still have properties they're managing outside of this sale (albeit, nothing too valuable at this point).

What are they Saudis trying to do investing so much in America. They are rumored to purchase Houston Refining and are also partnering with XOM on a cracker and PE unit. I get the cracker, but why would they want a 250KBD refinery and put up with all the regulations we have here.

Because it's their oil being refined there.....

According to Refining imports none of it is Saudi. It's mostly Mexico and Colombia.

They've been buying refining capacity for a while now. It's understandable that they would like to control refining capacity equal to their production.

How does the cracker make sense? I guess Saudi and XOM have long term visions, but aren't we about to be way over built on cracking capacity come 2018-2019?

Yeah the markets is about to be flooded with PE in the next couple years but the thesis is that demand continues to grow worldwide and we take advantage of cheap ethane.

I could see Saudi buying capacity over here and they turn off their production at home. Solves a gas issue (running low for power) and ethane supply issue. Could also help with dealing with swings in production as well as production costs.

I would take a stab that we are getting very close to their production costs on ethane. Last numbers I saw was around $0.75 vs. their $0.50. For reference, EU was around the $2 or $3 mark. This was back in 2012.

Another thing to think about is the US operators are much more experienced and capable. XOM will have a plant that can stay up for 4 years straight vs. a Saudi plant that might make 3 years between turnarounds/shutdowns. Couple that with a higher production rate vs. their old plants and I can see their desire to come over here.

It's not like Saudi is new to the refining game necessarily. They have been 50/50 at Motiva for like 2 decades now.

After they announced that split earlier this year, they were already going to control the largest refinery in the US. Why would they only want one? Of course they would expand.

We lost 6 of 11 field hands in drilling. 5 of 7 in completions. Don't know about management or engineering yet for our group. I know that total group numbers seems low, but this is round 3 for us. Brutal. MCBU took it on the chin.

looks like we are entering the " eat the seed corn" levels of cuts in the industry especially anything related to the GoM.
Reinforces my belief that the Gulf in particular and the offshore industry in general is undergoing a permanent change.
The bottom isn't here yet but I has to be getting close. But the recovery is going to be a lot slower and shallower than the 80-90's and many many jobs will never return. So glad my days are over. These things are too brutal to go thru over and over....

Anyone know anything about the new NOV RSS? Looks like a near bit pad pusher. I'm guessing it's meant to be dead cheap to capture some of the NA land market for RSS (not sure how much is left though).

What's it cost to run stuff like the SLB Orbit or the BHI systems on a land rig? I'm wondering where NOV fits into that market.

I figure next up for those 'lucky' enough to make it through is a general downward shift in comp for the whole industry.

If history is a guide...
The late 80's ( today) were nothing but layoffs, pay freezes then BIG pay cuts, more layoffs then just silence for the few survivors.
The 90's were basically a " lost" decade in the industry. There were some ups and downs BUT there weren't any real raises, no extras and we all knew we were ALL still expendable. Hiring was at a minimum but then again no one wanted to get into the mess called the energy industry. When we did want to ramp up it was kinda hard to find any veterans who wants to come back, especially if they were able to escape to other industries. At the same time the companies didn't want to pay market rate since the so-called recovery was not very stable.
It was an interesting time..worked like hell just to keep up..in fact the late 90's were pure HELL as we finally did get busy but were horribly understaffed and overworked.
