If you're flying frontier out of DFW, be prepared to be pissed off and wait quite a while, while waiting to try to drop off bags.

Any Ags know of any open engineering gigs in the Denver area? Just keeping an eye open for other opportunities with better benefits.

Got another question for you Denver skiers. We land in Denver at 6:40pm on a Thursday evening. We wanted to try and rent skis in Denver to use at a couple of different resorts over the weekend and then return them Sunday in Denver so we can avoid lines at the mountains. Are there any shops in and around Denver that you recommend? Is it even possible to rent skis that late in the evening on a Thursday?

Thanks again!!

Probably toast.

Have you tried calling ahead? It's possible they can leave them in a locker or something on the way into the mountains.

Where are you skiing?

I talked to another buddy and he directed me to rentskis.com. It looks like they let you pickup and return rentals at any of their affiliated shops at various mountains. We are going to ski Winter Park one day and then Copper on the next. Looks like they have shops at both locations so I should be able to keep them over night and not have to turn them in each day. We are going to give this a try unless someone on here tells me I shouldn't .

Thanks!!

That's a pretty good hime between those two resorts. Be careful and pay attention to the weather when driving.

I know nothing of that website but seems like a good idea. Are you spending the night at Copper?

So the local news reported tonight that everyone, not just commercial trucks, have to carry chains now. This is only my second winter here, has this always been the case and I just didn't realize it last year?

Jock,

Did they say that for all driving or mountain driving? My guess is they are budgeting on paying somebody to constantly help drivers get up the mountain.

Here's my personal rule...if you need chains you shouldn't be driving.

I think it was just the stretch of I-70 where they require the commercial trucks to have em in the mountains.

I don't agree. Sports authority, Christy sports.. These places are retail and open until 9-10pm. They rent skis, and in Denver are much less than the mountain.

My buddy lives in Evergreen so we are planning on a day trip to both mountains. Skiing Winter Park on a Friday, staying at his house, and then going to Copper Saturday morning for the day. This will be his first ski season living up there so maybe we are foolish for driving to both resorts, not really sure, we are just looking to try out different mountains and figure out what we like.

I didn't think about a store like that, I was focused on ski shops but that makes sense. We will look into that as well.

Clearly I am noob at skiing Colorado, I normally just ski the ice in New Mexico. What would happen if I rented from Sports Authority in Denver and I broke a binding or something? Do they have a deal with shops at the mountains or am I basically screwed until I drive back to Denver?

I think your plan is a little risky driving back to Evergreen every day.

However, do you own your own boots? I don't know what kind of skier you are but breaking bindings or skis is tough to do. Boots not fittin is going to ruin you day or trip.

I recommend getting fitted with the same pair of socks you will be wearing and making damn sure the boots are good. Christya closes at 7 pm so that is not going to work for you. I imagine you could use a sports authority or something like that here in Denver. It takes time to set this stuff and get you squared away so plan accordingly.

For instance if your flight lands at 640 you should plan on atleast another 45 minutes at the airport before getting on your way. The airport itself is probably 115 away from evergreen.

I live in Evergreen and we do a lot of Saturday ski trips during the winter to breck, keystone, and a-basin. After getting stuck in traffic and nasty weather coming back to Evergreen several times for 3 hours, we now only go if we can beat traffic getting to the mountain and leave by 1 or 2 to beat traffic coming back.

For renting skis and boots, when we've had people land late on Friday for a Saturday ski trip, the ski rental places near the resort usually open before or at the same time as the lifts. That's been easier than trying to race to the Denver rental places before they close.

Check out Colorado Ski & Golf, Christy Sports (the location on I70 by Denver Mills Mall is close to mountains), or Breeze Ski. They are pretty low cost since they are in the city. I wouldn't worry too much about breaking a binding in a couple of days, unless you are skiing really hard, and even then...

There are sports authority stores in Vail and Dillon

I recommend Colorado Ski n Golf. I'd also recommend leaving Evergreen by 6:30 am to beat the traffic & leaving Winter Park/Copper pretty early to beat the traffic returning to Evergreen. If the weather is decent, you should return home by about 1:30 (if it's bad, probably want to leave by 12:30 or 1:00... monitor the driving speeds at cotrip.org).

Just found this thread... Any Denver area lawyers on here? I have a potential opportunity there in PI litigation. Curious how the environment/practice is there compared to Houston/Texas. Any insight?

Well, I am a lawyer that lives in denver. But I haven't found a job yet in 6 months of looking, so I'd say jump at the opportunity. The market here seems especially tight. Granted, I am an outsider from Texas, but have 8+ years as an AUSA (ending in two days), and a law degree from a top 5 school.

Damn...that's surprising. If you don't mind me asking...Are you not wanting to take another USA position? What kind of position have you been looking for? I'm asking because I say I have an opportunity....but it's far from a done deal. I wanted to look at other potential opportunities as well, if any exist...

There's also an app called CDOT Mobile that updates the road conditions, traffic updates and any road closures/work zones that can be helpful as well.

I'm driving from Denver to Waco on Saturday. Any recommendations on route? Google shows 3 options:

1) i70 to i35

2) i25 to Amarillo to Wichita Falls via 287

3) i25 to Amarillo to Lubbock then through Abilene

The first options seems like the simplest but its almost 100miles further. Interstate all the way would be nice though.

1 is boring, but interstate.

2 is scenic until you hit very far NE New Mexico with small towns between Amarillo and Wichita Falls.

3 - no clue on the past Amarillo part, I've never done that.

Check the weather on all.

Having driven this way many times, my opinion is 2) Amarillo through Wichita Falls.

The part through NM is almost all four lane now, and you can drive pretty fast. Amarillo to Wichita Falls is by far the worst part, because you must slow down through the small towns. My experience, though, is you'll still be faster than through Kansas ... and you're much less likely to put a bullet in your head from boredom. Kansas sucks except for the sliver of KC that is actually in Kansas.

You don't drive through KC from CO to TX.

I'd say option 2 as well. I've driven down to Austin going that route and it wasn't that bad. Definitely more scenic. While the small towns do slow you down slightly, they're actually nice little breaks in the drive and provide more stopping points in case anyone in the group is needing something to eat/drink or use the restroom.

Oh, I know. Just making the point that the entire state isn't worth much, unless you're actually going to KC. Ha!

Ameristar is the nicest, but also the most expensive. Across the street is The Lodge which is still nice as well, but can be cheaper as well. Depends on what night you go though. I doubt there is much difference midweek. If you're not staying over night, be aware of the weather as well. They will close the roads if it starts dumping and you could end up stuck for a while, if not all night.

The last time I was at the Lodge, the only open craps table in the joint had a 6 inch tear in the felt in the middle of the table along with several other bare spots.
