I moved to Singapore for a 14 month project when I was 25 in 2009. I'm still overseas. I met my wife (Australian) in Singapore and have been living in Sydney for the past 18 months.

If you're looking for a short stint overseas, I'd recommend going to an expat hub like Singapore or Dubai. You'll get the international experience, have the opportunity to travel, and meet a ton of people. In the expat hubs, you can get all the comforts of the west (for a price). If you like the overseas life, you can go deeper down the rabbit hole and do some more rough and tumble assignments.

I have some friends who LOVED living in Lagos. I've got some other Aggie friends who have been living in Namibia for a few years now.

What about not being work dependent? Something like a Golden Visa.

Portugal is popular. It is pay-to-play, but has decent in-country requirements (14 days / year) and a 5 year seasoning period. But you and your kids conclude with EU citizenship. We've thought about it personally and for our daughter to have some fun options when she's older. Once we're RE, we'd like to spend long stints across the EU, so interests us!

I've looked into this one and wouldn't touch it unless you are incredibly wealthy. They've pulled real estate investment out of it and the investment option is 500k or donation of 250k. Investment to passport in hand is something like 9 years too. Thats a hell of a lot of time to stay open for regulatory and immigration law changes.

Also, I never heard of Subclass 858 but... Australia does change their immigration rules all the time.

Another example was bringing our dog. We had to do quarantine for a minimum of 30 days. Folks who came later said they didn't have to quarantine their dog for nearly as long.

EDIT: Now I see why you didn't have the school issues I did. This new Subclass 858 Visa basically makes you an Instant Permanent Resident.

I'm in Mosman.

We brought a cat over so well aware of how painful bringing an animal over is. The quarantine time was 10 days in Melbourne but it took us about 9 months to finally get the paperwork done and verify she didn't have rabies and all the shots, etc. It also cost more than I care to remember.

I feel very lucky to get PR from the start. Visa took about 6 months to process from application. We used a good immigration attorney and work paid the fees. I'd imagine it would be a real pain navigating everything on your own.

I know the 2088 very well. My girls went to school just up the hill from Balmoral.

You might have already figured it out but the folks in your neighbourhood are not just some of the wealthiest people in Australia, they're some of the wealthiest in the world.

If your ever see the high end chauffeured car with no license plates, just a crown, that's the Governor General.

We've done it twice - dragged wife + 3 kids (6, 3, and 10 months old at time) to Asia 25 years ago and loved it. Had 4th kid and did a 5-year stint in Switzerland bouncing all over Europe for work. Can tell you it's a game changer for your kids and getting exposed to other cultures; definitely puts the American way of life (good & bad) in a different context.
