I know draft talk isn't big here but this new 5 for 5 rule could have some interesting impact. College juniors now have a lot more leverage since they will have 2 years of eligibility remaining (plus NIL's making college more competitive). Historically a lot of juniors go in those 3-10 rounds because they are considered easier signs than high school players. I'm not so convinced that will be the case anymore, especially once you get past the 5th or 6th round or so where the slot amounts get down to a couple hundred k. Teams are going to need to do their due diligence moreso than ever and may wind up taking more high schoolers simply because side the sign ability risk gap is shrinking between the two demographics.

I think maybe for the final 3 spots or something each team gets a rep not already on the roster and we can vote on those last spots.

Fans voting for All Stars is stupid, just like Sports Writers voting for the Hall of Fame is stupid. All Stars should be voted on by the players, and maybe reserves can be voted in by the fans.

Hall of Fame should be a combination of current Hall of Famers, current players, and a small group of writers

I feel like it went off the rails when they went online. The right to vote should be reserved for people going to games like it used to be. Maybe online vote could be reserved for a final spot or something like that.

A 2B with these stats was the highest total vote getter in the AL and took the automatic spot.

You don't think in an arbitration hearing a player wouldn't want to show "hey I was an all star this year for your team"? It can't hurt their argument. Also I'd imagine agents throw around accolades to get more money all the time. All stars, silver sluggers, gold gloves, etc.

I'm just pointing out the absurdity that an average team, full of average players could literally be the entire starting AS team this year. And that the best player in the league not only was beat out by an average 2B but may be beat out by a below average DH.

He didn't deserve it over Vlad Jr or Matt Olson. The league was probably sick of the Astros telling them no thanks. Altuve, Correa, Brantley, and Pressly all rejected their invite.

He did deserve it over Jared Walsh.

The dumbest thing is that it's an award based on the first half of the season.

But yes, I remember this well and I believe we had an argument about it that year. Yuli was obviously very good that year but Vlad Jr. was having an MVP-caliber first half, Olson and Walsh had substantially more power (22 & 23 HR at the break vs Yuli's 10). Yuli was probably the 4th-best AL first baseman at the break.

If the voting was after the season, I think he makes that 2021 team. Same deal in 2019. He had a great 2nd half and if the voting is postseason he's on that team as well.

I actually think the MLB all star game is the best of the major 3 sports. It's fun to watch, a lot of people tune in. Rather than the atrocity that is the pro bowl and NBA all star game. I just wish there was a better system than fan votes. Like I said, it would be fun if they did maybe 1 rep per team that the fans could vote for the final 3ish spots on the roster. But the main 20ish guys for each team should be selected based solely on stats, and merit.

That's happened before. Kirk Gibson won an MVP without ever making an all star game.

Something like 1/3 WAR + 1/3 Fan Vote + 1/3 Player & Manager Vote could be decent.

Gold Gloves are for defense and have nothing to do with OPS.

From 2024-25 Patrick Bailey accounted for 60 runs per Fielding Run Values. The next 3 catcher's cafter that? 40, 23, and 22. He was an elite framer, elite at throwing out runners, and was fine blocking. He 1000% earned those.
