yes, this "new era" of Orioles baseball has choked hard in the postseason

swept at home 2 years-in-a-row

national sportswriters don't seem to be talking about that much

The pop of a glove is like no other non-visual sensory input in sports. It's just unique. It's one of those things that gets ingrained in your blood and immediately transports you to favorite memories as a kid or fan. You immediately recognize it.

What else is so iconic that you instantly know its origin?
  • Crack of a bat (certainly a metal bat ping, although not my favorite)
  • Squeak of a basketball sneaker on a court

Yep, baseball has both of my top 2 favorite sounds in all of sports:
  • The sound of a fastball being caught by a catchers glove
  • The sound of a baseball being hit by a wooden bat

Can't wait for another year of Astros baseball to start

I'd add the sound of a cleanly hit golf shot to my sports sound list.

I grew up on persimmon woods. You knew it immediately when you hit it on the screws. You could hear it and feel it. When metal came in everything turned into a "ping".

Speaking of the "crack of the bat", Chris Carter had probably the loudest home run I can remember. It probably helps that the stadium was nearly empty at the time:

I always felt Chris Carter would dominate in a home run derby if he every participated. He had an effortless swing that would produce moonshots.

The high pitched, hollow sound of a pickleball being thwacked back and forth at high rate.

If you want a bit of a challenge on Dailywalkoff, start selecting another team at random besides the Astros. A buddy and I have been doing this each day. Today we did the Dodgers, both of us are old and barely knew who was a pitcher and who was a hitter on their '22 team.

Nice find Farmer. I'd forgotten about that account but now remember it from the CWS.

So yeah, elite elite elite is what I'm gathering about Morton. If he can hit his spot could be a massive weapon for us.

I assume that is discounting any positive contribution from Javier, Garcia, and McCullers. It's also giving zero value to the outfield. I could see both being true.

I sure hope the front office trades Valdez for something if the team is struggling to get above .500 at the deadline… if they don't expect to resign him.

Wonder how far out those "deferrals" are. Between taxes and inflation, I don't think that will hold up better than what we or DET offered.

Not sure I completely understand that tweet. So he's getting$5 mil signing bonus plus $15 this season, with $20 deferred to some future date without interest? Do they not teach time value of money at LSU?

Yeah I think that's a mistake

Deferred half of the money and no interest. He wanted the optics of saying $40MM a year but knows he's not getting that.

And opt outs each year.

If he had a big year hitting against the monster, he's gone.

Actually nvm is not a mistake. He got a $5m signing bonus, so that's why it's $15m year 1 after deferrals

I've heard this from someone else..... he would still be insane to opt out and it's clearly obvious ballpark bias would play a role here. Maybe Colorado will open their checkbook
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

He opts out and renegotiates with Boston.

Thats crappy and I've heard GMs on the radio say that they hate that. Opt out after 1 year and you basically have to try and resign a player who is a FA again. And it's going to cost you more money to do it.

Well, if he mashes and hits an .850 - .900 OPS next year, I could see him testing free agency again and getting the longer term contract he desired.

Anything is possible. But any organization with a brain would see a guy who's been in decline for 5 years having a breakout year is super fishy and likely ballpark driven

There's always that 1 GM that says yes to an awful contract, lol. Like Rendon.

But, GMs seem to be a little more wise these days....depends on how desperate certain clubs are.

I would say the same about 6/156 vs 3/90….but ego plays a bigger role than logic sometimes

Spotrac has the deferred money as 6 M per year from 2035 to 2044. If he opts in and then picks up the 3rd they're going to pay him until he's 50. The present day value is 31.7 M per year. Not all the impressive for a 3 year deal when he had 170+ on the table. No one is offering him 3/75 age 34.
