The latest on the Astros and Alex Bregman, who have re-engaged, according to three sources - https://t.co/ElUUbchyz2

A lack of clarity in Bregman's market across the past month may have allowed the Astros back into the fray. According to three sources, unrest within the Astros' clubhouse about the possibility of Bregman's departure and Brown declaring the negotiations "stalled" also contributed, in part, to Houston circling back.
Quote:
The team's longstanding offer to Bregman remains on the table, one source said on Thursday afternoon, but it's unclear if the Astros will budge from the reported six years and $156 million it contained.
Quote:
Throughout October, second baseman Jose Altuve pleaded with Crane and the Astros' front office to retain Bregman, a player he said "made this entire organization better than where we actually were before him." In November, Crane acknowledged Altuve's comments "(carry) some weight with me and carries some weight with Dana."
If Bregman is back in Houston, team sources indicated he would play third base in place of Isaac Paredes, whom the Astros acquired as part of the three-player package for Tucker. In that scenario, both Paredes and Altuve could face a position change.
Altuve has never played a major-league inning anywhere but second base or shortstop, but his range and defensive metrics have gradually declined at second base across the past two seasons. Paredes, who is nine years younger than Altuve, has 53 major-league starts at second base.
According to multiple sources, moving Altuve to left field would be under consideration if Bregman returns to play third base, a theory first floated by USA Today on Thursday afternoon.
Doing so would represent a radical decision for one of the franchise's faces, but would assist in Altuve's ultimate goal having Bregman alongside him as a teammate for the foreseeable future.

If the Astros are able to trade Pressly, that could provide $ flexibility and enhance their chances to bring back star 3B Alex Bregman,EastCoastAgNc said:If the Astros are able to trade Pressly, that could provide $ flexibility and enhance their chances to bring back star 3B Alex Bregman, people involved say

Bregman doesn't make sense. If you have the payroll room, you get a cheap LH OF and spend the funds on a leverage relief arm and call it good.
I wonder if Alex would go for a bunch of deferred money to make payroll room in the short term to continue to address roster issues (bullpen, whatever comes up at the deadline).tylhair said:
Speculating..
It is possible that Bregman went to Boras and told him to get him back to Houston. Now that it is apparent that $200M or close to it isn't on the table.
In this scenario the Astros would have some leverage.

The Toronto Blue Jays and an unidentified West Coast team are among the clubs that have expressed interest in Pressly, who was demoted last season after Houston signed All-Star closer Josh Hader.
Yordan Alvarez at Astros Caravan stop downtown told reporters his knee is healed, and has felt normal for at least 3-4 weeks.

He tweaked his right knee at some point toward the end of the year.
He said he thought he may have needed surgery, but ended up not needing surgery.…

Who is in LF?
I can't imagine a scenario where that offer is still out there and valid given what else has happened and Crane wanting to be below the luxury threshold. I suspect anybody still saying it is valid is hearing it from Boras and not from Dana.Mr.Bond said:
IF that offer is actually still on the table (I'd be surprised) alex should have taken it yesterday

Comp pick for Bregman is based on last year's payroll so that ship has sailed. It could help with Framber but hardly seems worth considering if we are trying to compete this year.Farmer1906 said:Mr.Bond said:

Free up room to make a trade and stay under.
Get a better comp pic for Breggy.
News: MLB has made two on-field rule changes for 2025, one involving the shift, another involving base running. They passed unanimously in a competition committee vote Tuesday. https://t.co/GkicCy4fPT
