I'm pessimistic right now, so I may change my mind. For now, though, and without any other deals, playing 6 against 9 every night will not end well. The black hole that will be the bottom of the Astros lineup (outfield) will doom any chance of success.

Record: 83-79
How deep in playoffs: playoffs? playoffs?!
MVP: Alvarez
Top defender: Dubon
Rookie of the year: random minor league OF on the 40 and making the minimum
Top pitcher: Valdez
Top hitter: Altuve
Most HR: Yordan Alvarez 28
Highest AVG: Altuve .286
Most RBI: Walker 81
Most SB: Altuve 20
Lowest ERA: Valdez 3.60
Most SOs: Brown 170
SP Most wins: Valdez 13

Best bat flip: Singleton
I forgot he was on the roster guy: France
2025's will Kessinger get a hit watch: LMJ throws a single pitch
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

At what point does Breggy call Boras and tell him to get his **** together and get a deal done?
No matter what!

We would wind up losing two more draft picks as well as more international free agency bonus pool money. I'd be curious if this makes us more or less likely to trade Framber, both to save money and to recoup some young talent from those draft pick losses.

Middle of the line up would start to get pretty salty with that addition.

Tuve
Paredes
Yordan
Santander
Walker
Diaz
Peña
Chaz
Meyers

Short term contract through his age 34 season, seems to be the kind of thing crane likes just a matter of whether or not we want to exceed the tax

Any lineup that legitimately has Diaz in the 6 hole is stacked.

I cannot tell you how bad I want LMJ to contribute to the 2025 season in an important way.
Same. I love his passion not only for baseball but you can tell he loves this city too

I'm not sure he has that same passion as 2017-2020 McCullers

Maybe I misinterpreted your comment, but how in the world could anyone make an assessment on that? I'd actually say the opposite. He keeps getting hurt trying to come back.

It's been a long time since I've been a real sportswriter, but I did work for a tennis website for a few years and interviewed Martina Hingis at an event one time. If you don't know her, she was #1 very early in life, but hurt her hip and took forever to come back and was never as good.

I'm paraphrasing here because it's been 15 years or so, but we had talked about the comeback process, and she had something to the effect of - the worst of it is, that all you want to do is get back out there at your full potential, but suddenly you're having to change your goals to "can I plant my foot here without it hurting to the point that I feel like crying" and similar things. She came back and won a couple of titles and then got hurt again and said at some point you just get burned out trying to make it to these small milestones that are only a tiny part of actually playing the game.

I have always enjoyed LMJ, but it feels like we've heard 5 different times "He's throwing on a flat surface again!" But even that is so far gone from being a worthwhile contributor to a big league team. Even coming back to the team, how much does he know about our current catchers or Espada's strategy or the 25% of the league's hitters that were probably not there in 2022?

It just eventually starts to look like too steep of a hill. If I were him, I sure as hell wouldn't retire or give up either because that money builds your family's wealth for generations to come. But from this fan's perspective at least, the Astros have now paid him $49.6 million to pitch 8 regular season games and 3 post-season games in the last 3 years.

It's awkward watching him goof around in an HEB Mexican soap opera commercial knowing he's getting paid for that on top of the $17.6 million he's getting paid in general while not contributing anything. When your only time hanging around your teammates is in commercial featuring Orbit's evil twin, maybe it's time to let it go.

That would really surprise me given where we stand with payroll. I would figure we'd have to trade Presley first and maybe Carantini too. I'm still concerned with the homer or bust aspect of his game and his poor base running, but maybe he would surprise me.

Altuve can work with him in his baserunning and get him to a neutral runner

I'm reposting this because some of you seem to have missed it. Or not understand it. Or something.

This is with the current outfield in its current construction.

Add to that our pitching staff, which was a team strength last year, is poised to return several proven, quality, starters from injury and be even better this year.

We all hope we add an OF bat, and I would put money that by the trade deadline it will happen, if not sooner, but this is still a very good baseball team that has to tools to win 90+ games and go deep in the playoffs.

thinking about the Strasburg situation...

his retirement was delayed because he was negotiating with the Nationals regarding the remainder of his contract

wonder if LMj and the Astros...

by the way...the player has all the leverage

Where would Bregman play? Paredes is 3B and Walker is 1B. Unless paredes can play OF (I have no idea if he can) then I don't see a spot for Bregman anymore.

It won't happen but they have no problem moving Paredes to LF if need be. He would play LF and 2B giving both Yordan and Altuve time at DH in that scenario.

Appreciate the insight. Had no idea about paredes in LF was even a remote option. I agree the Bregman ship has sailed but logistically it is possible which I wasn't sure about.

They've been after Parades for a while now and a part of the reason is they see him as a versatile guy who can play a handful of positions. They love that kind of player. He hasn't seen much time in the corner outfield, but they believe he has the skillset to be at worst an average glove there.

There were internal discussions at some point during the offseason about what they would do if they happened to land him as well as Bregman/Arenado and Walker. Parades would play nearly every day at LF or second base as they want both Yordan and Altuve to get time at DH this year if at all possible.

Was it ever likely they would land all three of those guys? No.. but they had a plan.

Regardless, Parades' versatility gives the Astros options when/if Matthews and Smith are ready depending on what position they stick at. They've already discussed what an extension would look like with him.

With Pena comeback year AND Santander? Yes, the lineup would be good enough to overcome Meyers and Chas at the bottom. But those are two pretty big "ifs".

Along with Diaz getting some for the power back. Pena and Diaz producing could be key to the whole lineup IMO

Santander would take the lineup to another level. 4 year/$80mm or whatever is being reported doesn't seem like a terrible deal either. Defense would likely take a step back but that lineup would be deadly.

Even if they can't land Santander, I'm hoping they can at least get in on Profar. Not nearly as deadly with the bat but would improve the team defensively and on the bases.

Chas bouncing back to a guy who hits around .250 with 15-20 HR would be nice, too.

Profar isn't good defensively either.

I don't get the Profar love on this site outside of the fact he would be cheaper than Teoscar and Santander. He's had way more bad years than good, and his performance last year was in a contract year. I honestly want zero part of Profar.

If you actually look at his career, in his 11 years, he has 4 years where his OPS is above .750. Every other year is well below. Jake Meyers had an OPS of .646 this year. Profar had OPS of .649, .723, and .689 in 2021, 2022, and 2023 respectively before an OPS this year of .839 (which is, again, in a contract year).

Edit for I was wrong on Kikuchi and not wanting him when the trade happened. However, I have much more faith in the pitching coaching staff.

Chas is the guy I'm rooting for. If he could just get back to crushing lefties, he would be a nice CF/RF platoon.
