It's even worse after going to Wienerschnizel.

If Dana would make some more trades or sign a big free agent, we wouldn't have to resort to discussing the nuanced impacts of steroids on a man's undercarriage

maybe Dana and crane are playing 4d chess. Trade tuck now, and get the prospect they wanted and then drop major coin and sign him to a monster deal after this next season???

Quote:

In a game starved for power, free-agent outfielder Anthony Santander is a switch-hitter coming off a career-high 44 homers. So, now that Soto is signed, why does Santander continue to linger on the market?

Three possible reasons:
His career .307 on-base percentage. His sprint speed, which last season ranked in the bottom 18 percent of the league. And his poor defensive metrics, even though Orioles manager Brandon Hyde last season praised his work in right field.

Teoscar Hernndez, 32, is two years older than Santander. His .320 career OBP is slightly higher. His defense, while hardly Gold Glove caliber, is slightly better, at least when he is in right instead of left field. And his sprint speed last season ranked in the 83rd percentile.

Santander, who is seeking a longer deal than Hernndez, according to sources familiar with each player's expectations, still figures to do well. But if teams view him as even somewhat one-dimensional, he could end up with a lesser deal than he desires.

Some insight on Santander.

kind of a sad state of affairs when the 2 leading free agent outfielders have career .307 and .320 on-base percentages

does anyone draw walks anymore?

where's Adam Dunn when you need him...and his career .364 OBP

Can a qualifying offer be rescinded if a player takes longer than the org wants to decide? Like if we did a deal with Arenado could we tell Bregs "thanks for the memories but we're moving on."??

Jim Crane has learned nothing from Anreu and Montero if they do this. If Nolan ends up on this team and that's the last offensive move, then the offense will have been downgraded for years to come.

Better money spent than Nolan

I have been thankful for Breggy over the years, but I have seen his decline, and really don't want him back. However, if the numbers work, you have to try and resign someone who has meant so much to the franchise. But at this point, it's all about greed and I am hating him more than the last two years of watching him. It's probably not him and more so Boras, but it's still pissing me off. Bregman & Boras need to crap or get off the pot, as they are really starting to screw-up the offseason plans.

Bunch of tigers fans are begging to sign Bregman, thinking he could be the bar to fix our putrid offense. I jusf don't see it. Comerica is a large park, including LF. Seems like a nightmare for Bregman. Completely agree with your concerns for his decline.

Really depends on how much we have to give up for him. He's only 1 year older than Bregman and at worst he hits like Bregman, at best he's better than Bregman.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad move or that he's the next Abreu. But I certainly don't think it ends our offseason, we would need a OF hitter who can play right

The time has already passed to accept a QO so there's no need to rescind it.

At worst he hits like Bregman? Ummm… no. That's far from the worst. At worst he hits like Abreu.

Bellinger to the Yankees.

I wonder if this takes them out of the Christian Walker market. If you recall my posts yesterday.....
I don't think it does, but it does make them a little less motivated. They're probably more unlikely to get uncomfortable.

We don't need a 3Bman we need a damn OFer.

Christian Walker is still their number one target which hasn't changed since I mentioned him back around September. The tricky part is.. how long are they willing to wait?

Santander is also a possibility if they decide to shift to an OF bat.

If neither of those options happen or look like they will happen, Arenado is on the table which would move Paredes to first base.

They've checked in on a dozen or so guys so they can move fast once the dominoes start falling.

I remember saying Hader would be the number one target before the 2023 offseason. Can I go 2 for 2?

^^ in case you missed it from a couple days ago.

Upgrading 1B and OF is top priority. Arenado is the fallback if they can't make that happen.

We need 2 OFers, 1-2 BP arms, and at least a platoon-able 1B to compete seriously for a pennant. If we only get 1 OF, we probably compete for the division, but we will be bounced early in the playoffs without a magical run.

Adding Walker and Teoscar or Santander? Yes, please.

Is Breggy's indecision holding us back from signing any of these guys???

Not in terms of is he signing with Houston as much as the dominoes that will fall as a result of him signing anywhere if that makes sense

(Though there's still an outside chance he signs here)

I guess the Astros kind of have 2 plans.

Re-sign Breggy, we do A,B,C, and D

Don't re-sign Breggy, we do E, F, G, and H.

While still an outside chance he returns, it seems very unlikely. Just hope it doesn't cost us a chance to sign some good players. Plenty of offseason to go I guess...

Let Bregs go and get the pick. Paredes is your opening day 3B but gotta get a 1B and OF help. Bigly.

If Bregs does sign here then Paredes is your 1B and you need OF help.

Payroll Update

2024
Payroll - 242 M
CBT Payroll - 259 M + 4.5 M in taxes

2025
Payroll - 201 M
CBT Payroll - 217 M
CBT Threshold - 241 M

That only leaves around 24 M to spend this offseason without further reductions (Pressly, Caratini, or Framber)
